Probing the Electronic Structure of Bilayer Graphene by Raman Scattering
The electronic structure of bilayer graphene is investigated from a resonant
Raman study using different laser excitation energies. The values of the
parameters of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure model for graphite are measured
experimentally and some of them differ significantly from those reported
previously for graphite, specially that associated with the difference of the
effective mass of electrons and holes. The splitting of the two TO phonon
branches in bilayer graphene is also obtained from the experimental data. Our
results have implications for bilayer graphene electronic devices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Observation of Distinct Electron-Phonon Couplings in Gated Bilayer Graphene
A Raman study of a back gated bilayer graphene sample is presented. The
changes in the Fermi level induced by charge transfer splits the Raman G-band,
hardening its higher component and softening the lower one. These two
components are associated with the symmetric (S) and anti-symmetric vibration
(AS) of the atoms in the two layers, the later one becoming Raman active due to
inversion symmetry breaking. The phonon hardening and softening are explained
by considering the selective coupling of the S and AS phonons with interband
and intraband electron-hole pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Specificity of S '(1) and S '(2) subsites of human tissue kallikrein using the reactive-centre loop of kallistatin: the importance of P '(1) and P '(2) positions in design of inhibitors
We have demonstrated that the S-1' and S-2', subsites of human tissue kallikrein (hK1) play determinant roles in the recognition and hydrolysis of substrates. the presence of serine at position P-1' and arginine at P-2' resulted in the best substrate, Abz-Ala-Ile-Lys-Phe-Phe-Ser-Arg-Gln-EDDnp, which was derived from the kallistatin reactive-centre loop sequence and quencher groups o-aminobenzoic acid (Abz) and N-(2,4-dinitrophenyl)ethylenediamine (EDDnp). Serine and arginine are also the residues at positions P-1' and P-2' in human kininogen, from which hK1 releases Lys-bradykinin. Several peptide analogues of Abz-Ala-Ile-Lys-Phe-Phe-Ser-Arg-Gln-EDDnp, in which the Ser and Arg residues were substituted with various other amino acids, were synthesized and tested as substrates. Most of them were hydrolysed slowly, although they showed significant binding to hK1, as demonstrated by their competitive inhibition constants (K-i). Using this information, six peptides were designed, synthesized and assayed as inhibitors of hK1. Abz-Lys-Phe-Phe-Pro-Arg-Gln-EDDnp, Abz-Lys-Phe-Arg-Pro-Arg-Gln-EDDnp and acetyl-Lys-Phe-Phe-Pro-Leu-Glu-NH2 inhibited hK1 in the range 20-30 nM (letters in italics denote the D-form of the amino acid). the peptide acetyl-Lys-Phe-Phe-Pro-Leu-Glu-NH2 was a weak inhibitor for other serine proteases, as indicated by the higher K-i values compared with hK1, but this peptide was a potent inhibitor of human plasma kallikrein, which has a Ki value of 8 nM. This result was surprising, since this enzyme is known to be a restricted arginyl-hydrolase. in conclusion, acetyl-Lys-Phe-Phe-Pro-Leu-Glu-NH2 can be used as a leader compound to design specific inhibitors for hK1, plasma kallikrein, or for both at same time, if the inhibition of kinin release is the main goal.Universidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Biophys, BR-04044020 São Paulo, BrazilUniversidade Federal de São Paulo, Escola Paulista Med, Dept Biophys, BR-04044020 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc
Nature of the constant factor in the relation between radial breathing mode frequency and tube diameter for single-wall carbon nanotubes
Resonance Raman scattering is used to determine the radial breathing mode (RBM) frequency (ωRBM) dependence on tube diameter (dt) for single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). We establish experimentally the ωRBM=227.0/dt as the fundamental relation for pristine SWNTs. All the other RBM values found in the literature can be explained by an upshift in frequency due mostly to van der Waals interaction between SWNTs and environment
Supply chain resilience in a Covid-19 scenario: Mapping capabilities in a systemic framework
COVID-19 hits the global supply chains in a non-paradigm manner unfolding new and systemic complexity. Therefore, the unexpected and frequent disruptions forced the concern of preventing or creating supply chain resilience capabilities. This paper aims to provide theoretical and practical reflections on resilience in supply chains of essential goods during pandemics using a systems approach. Documental research was performed in order to characterize business practices in consulting reports and interviews with managers published in business communication media. Thus, a careful content analysis was carried out, including the coding and categorization of the leading practices indicated by these vehicles. We suggest categories of resilience factors as new concepts to face the new normal in the supply chains. These categories are Technology and People, Sourcing, Customer, Ecosystem, and Financial Assets. The systems approach consists of more qualified supply chain management stimulating several inputs and synchronized actions to sense and respond to the external environment dynamics
