Exploring Pompeii: discovering hospitality through research synergy
Hospitality research continues to broaden through an ever-increasing dialogue and alignment with a greater number of academic disciplines. This paper demonstrates how an enhanced understanding of hospitality can be achieved through synergy between archaeology, the classics and sociology. It focuses on classical Roman life, in particular Pompeii, to illustrate the potential for research synergy and collaboration, to advance the debate on hospitality research and to encourage divergence in research approaches. It demonstrates evidence of commercial hospitality activities through the excavation hotels, bars and taverns, restaurants and fast food sites. The paper also provides an example of the benefits to be gained from multidisciplinary analysis of hospitality and tourism
Identification of RNA binding motif proteins essential for cardiovascular development
Background: We recently identified Rbm24 as a novel gene expressed during mouse cardiac development. Due to its tightly restricted and persistent expression from formation of the cardiac crescent onwards and later in forming vasculature we posited it to be a key player in cardiogenesis with additional roles in vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Results: To determine the role of this gene in cardiac development, we have identified its zebrafish orthologs (rbm24a and rbm24b), and functionally evaluated them during zebrafish embryogenesis. Consistent with our underlying hypothesis, reduction in expression of either ortholog through injection of morpholino antisense oligonucleotides results in cardiogenic defects including cardiac looping and reduced circulation, leading to increasing pericardial edema over time. Additionally, morphant embryos for either ortholog display incompletely overlapping defects in the forming vasculature of the dorsal aorta (DA), posterior caudal vein (PCV) and caudal vein (CV) which are the first blood vessels to form in the embryo. Vasculogenesis and early angiogenesis in the trunk were similarly compromised in rbm24 morphant embryos at 48 hours post fertilization (hpf). Subsequent vascular maintenance was impaired in both rbm24 morphants with substantial vessel degradation noted at 72 hpf. Conclusion: Taken collectively, our functional data support the hypothesis that rbm24a and rbm24b are key developmental cardiac genes with unequal roles in cardiovascular formation

Identifying the connection between Roman Conceptions of ‘Pure Air’ and Physical and Mental Health in Pompeian Gardens (c. 150 BC-AD 79): A Multi-Sensory Approach to Ancient Medicine
Different genres of Roman literature commented on the relationship between the condition of the environment and physical and mental health. They often refer to clear, pure, or good air as a beneficial aspect of the environment. Yet, unlike fetid air, they provide few descriptions of what constituted healthy air quality. Moreover, aside from pointing out the association between the environment and bodily condition, the writers also did not explain precisely how the link between the two was made. This paper utilizes a comparative study of ancient literature and the archaeological remains of Roman gardens in Pompeii: archaeobotanical samples, fresco paintings, location, and surviving features. Three questions are addressed in this study: First, how did the Romans identify and define pure? Second, how did air connect to the body? Third, what were the qualities of pure air and how did they benefit the body? Not only was inhalation a means of linking air to the body, but the two were also related through sensory perception. I argue that sight, sound, and olfaction were used to identify the qualities of pure air. Through the sensory process of identification, the beneficial properties of pure air were, in accordance with ancient perceptions of sensory function, taken into the body and affected health. Thus, sensory perception acted as the bridge between the environment and health

A Discourse Analysis of Pilgrimage Reviews
This paper is the first to provide an account of the discursive features of online consumer reviews of pilgrimage sites. Drawing from pilgrimage studies and narrativity theory in consumer research, we explore how consumers communicate the spiritual and material aspects of pilgrimage experiences by examining a corpus of 833 consumer reviews on TripAdvisor of the most sacred pilgrimage sites of the world’s major five faith groups. Pilgrims include analytical discursive features to communicate the material aspect of their consumption experience. They reserve narration for spiritual transformation and the experience of strong emotions. Moreover, review ratings are only reflective of the spiritual aspect of their consumption experience. As such, our research complements previous studies by highlighting the material, physical aspect of this extraordinary consumption experience
Clinical, biochemical and genetic spectrum of 70 patients with ACAD9 deficiency: Is riboflavin supplementation effective?
Background: Mitochondrial acyl-CoA dehydrogenase family member 9 (ACAD9) is essential for the assembly of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I. Disease causing biallelic variants in ACAD9 have been reported in individuals presenting with lactic acidosis and cardiomyopathy. Results: We describe the genetic, clinical and biochemical findings in a cohort of 70 patients, of whom 29 previously unpublished. We found 34 known and 18 previously unreported variants in ACAD9. No patients harbored biallelic loss of function mutations, indicating that this combination is unlikely to be compatible with life. Causal pathogenic variants were distributed throughout the entire gene, and there was no obvious genotype-phenotype correlation. Most of the patients presented in the first year of life. For this subgroup the survival was poor (50% not surviving the first 2 years) comparing to patients with a later presentation (more than 90% surviving 10 years). The most common clinical findings were cardiomyopathy (85%), muscular weakness (75%) and exercise intolerance (72%). Interestingly, severe intellectual deficits were only reported in one patient and
Searches for neutrinos in the direction of radio-bright blazars with the ANTARES telescope
Active galaxies, especially blazars, are among the most promising neutrino
source candidates. To date, ANTARES searches for these objects considered
GeV-TeV -ray bright blazars. Here, a statistically complete
radio-bright blazar sample is used as the target for searches of origins of
neutrinos collected by the ANTARES neutrino telescope over 13 years of
operation. The hypothesis of a neutrino-blazar directional correlation is
tested by pair counting and by a complementary likelihood-based approach. The
resulting post-trial -value is ( in the two-sided
convention), possibly indicating a correlation. Additionally, a time-dependent
analysis is performed to search for temporal clustering of neutrino candidates
as a mean of detecting neutrino flares in blazars. None of the investigated
sources alone reaches a significant flare detection level. However, the
presence of 18 sources with a pre-trial significance above indicates
a ( in the two-sided convention) detection of a
time-variable neutrino flux. An \textit{a posteriori} investigation reveals an
intriguing temporal coincidence of neutrino, radio, and -ray flares of
the J0242+1101 blazar at a ( in the two-sided convention)
level. Altogether, the results presented here suggest a possible connection of
neutrino candidates detected by the ANTARES telescope with radio-bright
blazars
Prospects for combined analyses of hadronic emission from -ray sources in the Milky Way with CTA and KM3NeT
The Cherenkov Telescope Array and the KM3NeT neutrino telescopes are major
upcoming facilities in the fields of -ray and neutrino astronomy,
respectively. Possible simultaneous production of rays and neutrinos
in astrophysical accelerators of cosmic-ray nuclei motivates a combination of
their data. We assess the potential of a combined analysis of CTA and KM3NeT
data to determine the contribution of hadronic emission processes in known
Galactic -ray emitters, comparing this result to the cases of two
separate analyses. In doing so, we demonstrate the capability of Gammapy, an
open-source software package for the analysis of -ray data, to also
process data from neutrino telescopes. For a selection of prototypical
-ray sources within our Galaxy, we obtain models for primary proton and
electron spectra in the hadronic and leptonic emission scenario, respectively,
by fitting published -ray spectra. Using these models and instrument
response functions for both detectors, we employ the Gammapy package to
generate pseudo data sets, where we assume 200 hours of CTA observations and 10
years of KM3NeT detector operation. We then apply a three-dimensional binned
likelihood analysis to these data sets, separately for each instrument and
jointly for both. We find that the largest benefit of the combined analysis
lies in the possibility of a consistent modelling of the -ray and
neutrino emission. Assuming a purely leptonic scenario as input, we obtain, for
the most favourable source, an average expected 68% credible interval that
constrains the contribution of hadronic processes to the observed -ray

Search for neutrino counterparts to the gravitational wave sources from O3 catalogues with the ANTARES detector
Since 2015 the LIGO and Virgo interferometers have detected gravitational
waves from almost one hundred coalescences of compact objects (black holes and
neutron stars). This article presents the results of a search performed with
data from the ANTARES telescope to identify neutrino counterparts to the
gravitational wave sources detected during the third LIGO/Virgo observing run
and reported in the catalogues GWTC-2, GWTC-2.1, and GWTC-3. This search is
sensitive to all-sky neutrinos of all flavours and of energies GeV,
thanks to the inclusion of both track-like events (mainly induced by
charged-current interactions) and shower-like events (induced by other
interaction types). Neutrinos are selected if they are detected within s from the GW merger and with a reconstructed direction compatible with
its sky localisation. No significant excess is found for any of the 80 analysed
GW events, and upper limits on the neutrino emission are derived. Using the
information from the GW catalogues and assuming isotropic emission, upper
limits on the total energy and on the fraction of the total
energy budget emitted as neutrinos of
all flavours are also computed. Finally, a stacked analysis of all the 72
binary black hole mergers (respectively the 7 neutron star - black hole merger
candidates) has been performed to constrain the typical neutrino emission
within this population, leading to the limits: erg and (respectively, erg and ) for spectrum and isotropic emission.
Other assumptions including softer spectra and non-isotropic scenarios have
