The tick Rhipicephalus microplus is known to develop resistance against some commercial acaracides, driving a search for natural alternatives. An evaluation was done of the acaricide activity against adult and larval R. microplus of ethanol extracts from three Leucaena spp. genotypes: L. leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (Native); L. leucocephala (Cunningham); and L. Leucocephala x L. padilla (KX2). Larval immersion and adult immersion tests were used to evaluate acaricide activity. Secondary metabolite profiles of the three genotypes were generated using analytical chromatographic plates. Against the larvae, the 50% extract concentration exhibited 91.68% mortality for the Cunningham genotype, 82.00% for the KX2 and 54.06% for the Native. The Native genotype extract was most effective against adults with a 50% mortality at a 20% concentration. Flavonoids and terpenes were identified in all three genotypes and are probably responsible for their acaricide activity. The Leucaena spp. Cunningham and KX2 extracts were effective against R. microplus larvae, but further research is needed to identify the metabolites that provide this acaricide activity, be it individually or synergistically.

Background. Different species of Perkinsus spp. have been associated to mortality of commercial mollusks. Goals. The prevalence of Perkinsus sp. in the callista clam Megapitaria squalida was evaluated monthly (June 2015 to November 2016) to determine the relationship between the infection and size of clam. Methods. 5,000 clam seeds (5.73 mm height of the shell and 0.03 g of initial weight) were placed in a fishing refuge of Altata, Sinaloa. A total of 60 specimens were collected each month to evaluate their growth and parasite prevalence. The water physicochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, depth, and transparency) and the length, height, and width of the shell and final weight of M. squalida were obtained. Results. Ray’s thioglycollate fluid medium test (MFTR) detected spherical cells (10X) of dark color indicating the presence of presumed hypnospores of Perkinsus sp. during the first 17 months of sampling. The mean infection intensity was grade 2 (mild), while the maximum prevalence was 43.33% in the months of November (2015) and March (2016), with an average of 21.05%. None of the Perkinsus sp sample (n = 112) positively detected by MFTR confirmed the presence of the protozoan. There was no correlation (p >0.05) between the prevalence of the pathogen with all the parameters studied. Conclusions. The results suggest that M. squalida is not susceptible to Perkinsus sp. The present represents the first report of Perkinsus sp. In the callista clam M. squalida.

Objectives: This study sought to quantify and compare the decline in volumes of cardiovascular procedures between the United States and non-US institutions during the early phase of the coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the care of many non-COVID-19 illnesses. Reductions in diagnostic cardiovascular testing around the world have led to concerns over the implications of reduced testing for cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. Methods: Data were submitted to the INCAPS-COVID (International Atomic Energy Agency Non-Invasive Cardiology Protocols Study of COVID-19), a multinational registry comprising 909 institutions in 108 countries (including 155 facilities in 40 U.S. states), assessing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on volumes of diagnostic cardiovascular procedures. Data were obtained for April 2020 and compared with volumes of baseline procedures from March 2019. We compared laboratory characteristics, practices, and procedure volumes between U.S. and non-U.S. facilities and between U.S. geographic regions and identified factors associated with volume reduction in the United States. Results: Reductions in the volumes of procedures in the United States were similar to those in non-U.S. facilities (68% vs. 63%, respectively; p = 0.237), although U.S. facilities reported greater reductions in invasive coronary angiography (69% vs. 53%, respectively; p < 0.001). Significantly more U.S. facilities reported increased use of telehealth and patient screening measures than non-U.S. facilities, such as temperature checks, symptom screenings, and COVID-19 testing. Reductions in volumes of procedures differed between U.S. regions, with larger declines observed in the Northeast (76%) and Midwest (74%) than in the South (62%) and West (44%). Prevalence of COVID-19, staff redeployments, outpatient centers, and urban centers were associated with greater reductions in volume in U.S. facilities in a multivariable analysis. Conclusions: We observed marked reductions in U.S. cardiovascular testing in the early phase of the pandemic and significant variability between U.S. regions. The association between reductions of volumes and COVID-19 prevalence in the United States highlighted the need for proactive efforts to maintain access to cardiovascular testing in areas most affected by outbreaks of COVID-19 infection

Photosynthetic and respiratory responses of Gracilaria parvispora from the southeastern Gulf of California

    No full text
Photosynthetic and respiratory responses (P–E curves) of Gracilaria parvispora from the southeast Gulf of California were studied at four temperatures (20, 25, 30, 35 °C) and salinity (25, 30, 35, 40 psu) combinations. The alga showed acclimation in its photosynthetic and respiratory responses to tropical temperature as well as to oceanic salinity. A positive effect of temperature on photosynthetic rate (Pmax) was observed for all salinities. Photosynthetic rates for treatments at 20 and 25 °C were lower (12 mg O2 g dw−1h−1). G. parvispora showed limited tolerance to low salinities (25 psu) and low temperatures (20 °C) and the interaction between temperature and salinity was significant (analysis of variance, P<0.05). Responses to salinity indicated adaptation to oceanic salinity. Photosynthetic responses were lower at 25 psu than at higher salinities. The lowest Pmax values (6.2–8.2 mg O2 g dw−1h−1) were observed at the lowest salinity (25 psu) regardless of temperature. Compensation and saturation irradiances (26–170 and 57–149 μmol photons m−2s−1, respectively) indicate adaptation to lower irradiances in shallow (1–2 m depth) habitats, where turbidity can be high, and the capacity of shade adaptation has been developed. Results suggest distribution of this species is mainly related to salinity or temperature. The potential mariculture efforts of G. parvispora would be limited by low temperatures in winter, and indicate that this species will probably not be able to spread further due to low temperatures (<15 °C) in the upper part of the Gulf of California

Recent introduction of Gracilaria parvispora (Gracilariales, Rhodophyta) in Baja California, Mexico

    No full text
Gracilaria parvispora is reported for the first time as an invasive species in northwestern Mexico based on morphological, anatomical and molecular data. The species is widely distributed in the region, where it colonizes sandy and rocky habitats from intertidal areas down to a depth of 1.5 m. The morphological and anatomical data from the Mexican specimens matched the circumscription of the species in Hawaiian waters. Two molecular markers ( rbc L and cox 1) showed that the Mexican populations were closer to the Hawaiian populations than the Korean populations, which may relate to a similarity in seawater temperatures between Hawaii and Baja California. Gracilaria parvispora formed extensive mats together with Gracilaria vermiculophylla. It was found in stomach samples from a green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ) in the coastal lagoons of Baja California Sur. The ecological impacts of the two alien Gracialria species on other native species and communities have yet to be determined. This is the first demonstration of a second invasive Gracilaria species, following the introduction of G. vermiculophylla into the northwestern Mexico region

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis Leads to Differential Regulation of Genes and miRNAs Associated with the Cell Wall in Tomato Leaves

    No full text
Arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis is an association that provides nutritional benefits to plants. Importantly, it induces a physiological state allowing plants to respond to a subsequent pathogen attack in a more rapid and intense manner. Consequently, mycorrhiza-colonized plants become less susceptible to root and shoot pathogens. This study aimed to identify some of the molecular players and potential mechanisms related to the onset of defense priming by mycorrhiza colonization, as well as miRNAs that may act as regulators of priming genes. The upregulation of cellulose synthases, pectinesterase inhibitors, and xyloglucan endotransglucosylase/hydrolase, as well as the downregulation of a pectinesterase, suggest that the modification and reinforcement of the cell wall may prime the leaves of mycorrhizal plants to react faster and stronger to subsequent pathogen attack. This was confirmed by the findings of miR164a-3p, miR164a-5p, miR171e-5p, and miR397, which target genes and are also related to the biosynthesis or modification of cell wall components. Our findings support the hypothesis that the reinforcement or remodeling of the cell wall and cuticle could participate in the priming mechanism triggered by mycorrhiza colonization, by strengthening the first physical barriers upstream of the pathogen encounter
