The spatial shift-share analysis - new developments and some findings for the Spanish case
The main feature of shift-share analysis is, according to Dunn (1960), the computation of geographical shifts in economic activity. Nevertheless, the traditional shift-share approach does not include explicitly the interaction between the considered spatial units (countries, municipalities, regions, etc) since each of these units is considered to be independent with respect to the others. The consideration of the spatial dependence was suggested by some authors who recognized that the decomposed effects are not spatially independent. Nazara y Hewings (2002, 2004) take up this idea again and implement a new shift-share model based on the existence of spatial dependence between the geographic units by means of the definition of a spatial weight matrix. In this paper a comparative analysis of the different models is carried out. The obtained conclusions are also illustrated with some empirical applications related to municipalities.
The evolution of the employment in the European Union. A stochastic shift and share approach
The employment is a main economic variable whose evolution has shown different dynamics within the European Union. Recent papers have recovered the significance of the sectoral factors in the explanation of the regional growth. In this sense, shift and share analysis has been considered an extremely useful technique and a standardization procedure has been developed to decompose the regional growth into three components: the national effect, the industry-mix effect and the competitive effect. Although shift and share analysis has been widely used in the explanation of the differences of growth between regions, this method has been criticized since its classical formulation does not allow to test hypotheses. Therefore, stochastic models have been developed as an extension of classical shift and share analysis, allowing the implementation of inferential processes and forecasting tools. The aim of this paper is to analyze the recent evolution of the employment in the European Union, developing a stochastic shift and share model and testing the sources of regional and sectoral differences.
Probabilistic values for bicooperative games
The present paper develops some general conditions under which we analize the bicooperative games introduced by Bilbao (2000). We define the probabilistic values for these games and observe in detail the axioms that characterize such values. Following the work of Weber (1988), these axioms are sequentially introduced observing how they have repercussions on the probabilistic value expression. The Shapley value for bicooperative games
The aim of the present paper is to study a one-point solution concept for bicooperative games. For these games introduced by Bilbao (2000), we define a one-point solution called the Shapley value, since this value can be interpreted in a similar way to the classical Shapley value for cooperative games. The main result of the paper is an axiomatic characterization of this value.Bicooperative games, Shapley value.
Defining Scenarios through shift - share models. An Application to the regional employment
The analysis of different economic situations and risk factors is necessary in order to properly define forecasting scenarios. In this paper we focus on the shift-share model as a useful tool in the definition of economic scenarios, based on the different components that contribute to the change of a given economic magnitude (the so called national, sectoral and competitive effects). Although the most commonly used methodology is based on the âconstant shiftâ and the âconstant shareâ hypotheses, additional options can be considered based on the expected behaviour of the competitive effect, thus leading to more realistic scenarios. Once these new options are developed, this approach is applied to the definition of scenarios for the future evolution of the regional employment.
Review and Comparison of Intelligent Optimization Modelling Techniques for Energy Forecasting and Condition-Based Maintenance in PV Plants
Within the field of soft computing, intelligent optimization modelling techniques include
various major techniques in artificial intelligence. These techniques pretend to generate new business
knowledge transforming sets of "raw data" into business value. One of the principal applications of
these techniques is related to the design of predictive analytics for the improvement of advanced
CBM (condition-based maintenance) strategies and energy production forecasting. These advanced
techniques can be used to transform control system data, operational data and maintenance event data
to failure diagnostic and prognostic knowledge and, ultimately, to derive expected energy generation.
One of the systems where these techniques can be applied with massive potential impact are the
legacy monitoring systems existing in solar PV energy generation plants. These systems produce a
great amount of data over time, while at the same time they demand an important e ort in order to
increase their performance through the use of more accurate predictive analytics to reduce production
losses having a direct impact on ROI. How to choose the most suitable techniques to apply is one of
the problems to address. This paper presents a review and a comparative analysis of six intelligent
optimization modelling techniques, which have been applied on a PV plant case study, using the
energy production forecast as the decision variable. The methodology proposed not only pretends
to elicit the most accurate solution but also validates the results, in comparison with the di erent
outputs for the di erent techniques
The Economic Geography of Most NorthâWestern Region of Spain: Galicia and the Effect of Market Access on Regional Development Levels
This chapter estimates the nominal wage equation of the geographical economics literature using data on the Galician regions over the period 2003â2013. The results of the estimations show the existence of a spatial wage structure across the Galician regions with a clear WestâEast gradient. Additionally, we have controlled for the inclusion of potential covariates that might be influencing the levels of regional per capita income such as educational attainment levels and technological levels. A framework for effective management of condition based maintenance programs in the context of industrial development of E-Maintenance strategies
CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) solutions are increasingly present in industrial systems due to two
main circumstances: rapid evolution, without precedents, in the capture and analysis of data and
significant cost reduction of supporting technologies. CBM programs in industrial systems can become
extremely complex, especially when considering the effective introduction of new capabilities provided
by PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) and E-maintenance disciplines. In this scenario, any CBM
solution involves the management of numerous technical aspects, that the maintenance manager needs
to understand, in order to be implemented properly and effectively, according to the companyâs strategy.
This paper provides a comprehensive representation of the key components of a generic CBM solution,
this is presented using a framework or supporting structure for an effective management of the CBM
programs. The concept âsymptom of failureâ, its corresponding analysis techniques (introduced by ISO
13379-1 and linked with RCM/FMEA analysis), and other international standard for CBM open-software
application development (for instance, ISO 13374 and OSA-CBM), are used in the paper for the
development of the framework. An original template has been developed, adopting the formal structure
of RCM analysis templates, to integrate the information of the PHM techniques used to capture the failure
mode behaviour and to manage maintenance. Finally, a case study describes the framework using the

strategic human resource (HR) management. Thus far, both disciplines have
advanced in isolation. Therefore, this paper aims to examine if a combination
