EFFECT OF COMPATIBILITY BETWEEN CONSCIOUS GOAL AND NONCONSCIOUS PRIMING ON PERFORMANCE

Goal pursuit can involve deliberate and conscious processes, but can also occur automatically and nonconsciously, following the priming of specific contents. The way in which priming and conscious goals combine remains unresolved. We investigated the effect of goal-compatible or goal-incompatible priming on the pursuit of a conscious goal. Participants 1) were primed with accuracy-related words or inaccuracy-related words, 2) were given an instruction of accuracy (i.e. a conscious goal), and 3) performed an unskilled motor task. Results indicated that both nonconscious priming and conscious goal influence motor performance. Effects of priming and conscious goal pursuit are additive when contents are compatible and subtractive when they are incompatible

    No full text
International audienceIn three experiments, we explored the consequences of the priming of an uncontrollable situation on performance, emotions and stress level. Participants first read a short text involving a character who was confronted with a controllable vs. an uncontrollable situation. Then, in a phase presented as another study, performance to an anagram task, emotions valence and stress level were collected. Results indicate that participants primed with the uncontrollable situation perform lower, feel more negative emotions and display a higher level of stress than participants primed with the controllable situation and participants of a control group. Results are discussed in the framework of automatic perception-behavior link and of nonconscious goal contagion and pursuit.

Beware of the gorilla: Effect of goal priming on inattentional blindness

    No full text
International audienceWhen people’s attention is engaged in a visual task, they often are blind to unexpected events occurring in their environment. This phenomenon is known as inattentional blindness. In this study, we examine inattentional blindness with regard to goal priming, a technique allowing to unconsciously influence goal pursuit. After being primed with a detection goal, the name of the target to detect, or no prime, participants watched a short sequence in which they had to count passes made by basketball players. An unexpected event occurred during the video. Results indicated that when attentional demands of the monitoring task were moderate, goal priming improved the detection of the unexpected event. Implications for the understanding of nonconscious management of attention will be discussed
