Modularity measure of networks with overlapping communities

    Get PDF
In this paper we introduce a non-fuzzy measure which has been designed to rank the partitions of a network's nodes into overlapping communities. Such a measure can be useful for both quantifying clusters detected by various methods and during finding the overlapping community-structure by optimization methods. The theoretical problem referring to the separation of overlapping modules is discussed, and an example for possible applications is given as well

We report the discovery of HAT-P-56b by the HATNet survey, an inflated hot Jupiter transiting a bright F type star in Field 0 of NASA's K2 mission. We combine ground-based discovery and follow-up light curves with high precision photometry from K2, as well as ground-based radial velocities from TRES on the FLWO 1.5m telescope to determine the physical properties of this system. HAT-P-56b has a mass of 2.18MJ2.18 M_J, radius of 1.47RJ1.47 R_J, and transits its host star on a near-grazing orbit with a period of 2.7908 d. The radius of HAT-P-56b is among the largest known for a planet with Mp>2MJM_p > 2 M_J. The host star has a V-band magnitude of 10.9, mass of 1.30 MM_\odot, and radius of 1.43 RR_\odot. The periodogram of the K2 light curve suggests the star is a γ\gamma Dor variable. HAT-P-56b is an example of a ground-based discovery of a transiting planet, where space-based observations greatly improve the confidence in the confirmation of its planetary nature, and also improve the accuracy of the planetary parameters.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures, accepted by A

A Novel Eddy Current Septum Magnet for SPS Extraction towards LHC and CNGS

    Get PDF
A new East Fast-Extraction System is under construction in the SPS, to supply particles with a maximum batch length of 7.8 us and 10.5 us to the LHC and to CNGS (CERN Neutrino to Gran Sasso), respectively. The extraction septum magnets actually used at the SPS have been designed for slow extraction over several seconds, have large cooling and electrical power demands and need frequently maintenance in a high radiation environment. A fast system of only 250 us pulse duration has therefore been developed, using a half-sine excitation pulse with a superimposed third harmonic. The short pulse duration requires very thin magnetic yoke laminations, which can not easily be stamped and stacked. Profiting from a development for the LHC beam dump kicker magnets, the yoke is therefore built-up from tape-wound cylindrical cores, employing 50 um thick Si-steel tape. Thirty two cores are stacked longitudinally to produce a yoke of 3.2 meter length. The aperture is cut radial into each cylinder. The cores are radial compressed by spring-loaded pistons inserted in strong stainless-steel frames to provide mechanical stability. The 5+1 mm thick copper/iron septum is separated from the excitation current loop and acts as a passive eddy current screen. This allows separating the vacuum of the magnet from that of the circulating-beam channel, avoiding the need of using UHV material. This paper presents the magnet and generator prototype design as well as simulation and measurement results

Modest genetic influence on bronchodilator response: a study in healthy twins.

AIM: To determine the reasons for large standard deviation of bronchodilator response (BDR) and establish whether there is a potential heritable component in healthy subjects. METHODS: 67 monozygotic and 42 dizygotic adult twin pairs were assessed for bronchodilator response (% change in FEV1 after inhaling 400 microg salbutamol). Univariate quantitative genetic modeling was performed. RESULTS: Multiple regression modeling showed a significant association between BDR and sex and baseline FEV1 (P<0.05), while no association was found with smoking habits, body mass index, or age. Within pair correlation in monozygotic twins was modest (0.332), but higher than in dizygotic twins (0.258). Age-, sex-, and baseline FEV1-adjusted genetic effect accounted for 14.9% (95% confidence interval, CI 0%-53.1%) of the variance of BDR, shared environmental effect for 18.4% (95% CI 0%-46.8%), and unshared environmental effect for 66.8% (95% CI 46.8%-88.7%). CONCLUSION: Our twin study showed that individual differences in BDR can be mostly explained by unshared environmental effects. In addition, it is the first study to show low, insignificant hereditary influences, independently from sex, age, and baseline FEV1

HATS-3b: An inflated hot Jupiter transiting an F-type star

We report the discovery by the HATSouth survey of HATS-3b, a transiting extrasolar planet orbiting a V=12.4 F-dwarf star. HATS-3b has a period of P = 3.5479d, mass of Mp = 1.07MJ, and radius of Rp = 1.38RJ. Given the radius of the planet, the brightness of the host star, and the stellar rotational velocity (vsini = 9.0km/s), this system will make an interesting target for future observations to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and determine its spin-orbit alignment. We detail the low/medium-resolution reconnaissance spectroscopy that we are now using to deal with large numbers of transiting planet candidates produced by the HATSouth survey. We show that this important step in discovering planets produces logg and Teff parameters at a precision suitable for efficient candidate vetting, as well as efficiently identifying stellar mass eclipsing binaries with radial velocity semi-amplitudes as low as 1 km/s.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to A

Post-transplantation morphological and functional changes in kidneys from expanded criteria donors

    Get PDF
Introduction Despite an increase in the number of cadaver donors and overall organ transplantations, the dramatic increase in the waiting list makes it necessary to reconsider donor criteria. The authors wanted to examine whether differences could exist in the function and/or morphology of transplanted kidneys originated from expanded criteria donors (ECDs) and ideal donors 1 and 5 years after transplantation. Methods Kidney function and histopathologic findings were analyzed and compared 1 and 5 years after transplantation in 97 patients having ECD kidneys and in 178 patients who received ideal donor kidneys (IDK). Results Serum creatinine level was significantly higher (p = 0.001) and estimated glomerular filtration rate was significantly lower (p = 0.003) in patients having ECD kidneys as compared with those with IDK 5 years after transplantation. Morphological changes in the transplanted kidneys, such as tubulitis (p = 0.025) and interstitial inflammation (p = 0.002), were significantly more frequently present in patients with ECD kidneys than in those with IDK 1 year after transplantation. Conclusion Despite an absence of differences in kidney function 1 year after kidney transplantation between patients having ECD and IDK, morphological differences in the transplanted kidneys can be detected between the two groups of patients

Positron and positronium annihilation patterns in zeolites and bulk ceramics

    Get PDF
Positron lifetime (LT) measurements have revealed that in porous media the annihilation pattern is probably dominated by a near-saturation level trapping both for the positron and the positronium as well, which masks the contribution from the ldquofree annihilationrdquo, i.e., annihilation from delocalised positrons. In this work we compare positron lifetime spectra of crystalline zeolites with bulk ceramic materials fabricated by sintering from the same constituents as the zeolites and analyse common features and differences between them. For the dense ceramic samples the contribution from long-living components to the annihilation pattern is substantially lower than that for the zeolites. The results are analysed with the aim to extract new knowledge for the zeolites and for the sensitivity limits for free volume studies in ceramics. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim

Canonical Ensemble of Initial States Leading to Chiral Fluctuations

    Get PDF
In energetic heavy ion collisions, if quark-gluon plasma is formed, its hadronization may lead to observable critical fluctuations, i.e., DCC formation. The strength and observability of these fluctuations depend on the initial state. Here we study the canonical ensemble of initial states of chiral fluctuations in heavy ion collisions and the probability to obtain observable domains of chiral condensates.Comment: 13 pages (figures included) Accepted for publication in Phys. HAT-P-57b: A Short-Period Giant Planet Transiting A Bright Rapidly Rotating A8V Star Confirmed Via Doppler Tomography

    Get PDF
We present the discovery of HAT-P-57b, a P = 2.4653 day transiting planet around a V = 10.465 +- 0.029 mag, Teff = 7500 +- 250 K main sequence A8V star with a projected rotation velocity of v sin i = 102.1 +- 1.3 km s^-1. We measure the radius of the planet to be R = 1.413 +- 0.054 R_J and, based on RV observations, place a 95% confidence upper limit on its mass of M < 1.85 M_J . Based on theoretical stellar evolution models, the host star has a mass and radius of 1.47 +- 0.12 M_sun, and 1.500 +- 0.050 R_sun, respectively. Spectroscopic observations made with Keck-I/HIRES during a partial transit event show the Doppler shadow of HAT-P-57b moving across the average spectral line profile of HAT-P- 57, confirming the object as a planetary system. We use these observations, together with analytic formulae that we derive for the line profile distortions, to determine the projected angle between the spin axis of HAT-P-57 and the orbital axis of HAT-P-57b. The data permit two possible solutions, with -16.7 deg < lambda < 3.3 deg or 27.6 deg < lambda < 57.4 deg at 95% confidence, and with relative probabilities for the two modes of 26% and 74%, respectively. Adaptive optics imaging with MMT/Clio2 reveals an object located 2.7" from HAT-P-57 consisting of two point sources separated in turn from each other by 0.22". The H and L -band magnitudes of the companion stars are consistent with their being physically associated with HAT-P-57, in which case they are stars of mass 0.61 +- 0.10 M_sun and 0.53 +- 0.08 M_sun. HAT-P-57 is the most rapidly rotating star, and only the fourth main sequence A star, known to host a transiting planet.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables, accepted for publication in A
