Algebraic reduction of the Ising model
We consider the Ising model on a cylindrical lattice of L columns, with
fixed-spin boundary conditions on the top and bottom rows. The spontaneous
magnetization can be written in terms of partition functions on this lattice.
We show how we can use the Clifford algebra of Kaufman to write these partition
functions in terms of L by L determinants, and then further reduce them to m by
m determinants, where m is approximately L/2. In this form the results can be
compared with those of the Ising case of the superintegrable chiral Potts
model. They point to a way of calculating the spontaneous magnetization of that

Towards the Integration of Value and Coordination Models - Position Paper -
Cross-organizational collaborations have a high complexity.\ud
Modelling these collaborations can be done from di®erent perspectives.\ud
For example, the value perspective represents expected value exchanges\ud
in a collaboration while the coordination perspective represents the order\ud
in which these exchanges occur. How to maintain consistency between\ud
di®erent models during design time as well as runtime constitutes a chal-\ud
lenging topic. De¯ning criteria and de¯nitions re°ecting the relation be-\ud
tween these models during the entire life cycle is not straightforward.\ud
Di®erent criteria are used for di®erent models since each model captures\ud
a speci¯c aspect of the collaboration. In this paper we investigate the\ud
challenges arising when addressing the problem of maintaining adequate\ud
and consistent models of a collaboration during the entire life cycle of\ud
a collaboration. We propose a framework in which we connect business\ud
layer, process layer and implementation layer, presenting the direction\ud
for solving this multifaceted problem. We will describe several challenges\ud
we anticipate to encounter while implementing our framework
Smooth vortex precession in superfluid 4He
We have measured a precessing superfluid vortex line, stretched from a wire
to the wall of a cylindrical cell. By contrast to previous experiments with a
similar geometry, the motion along the wall is smooth. The key difference is
probably that our wire is substantially off center. We verify several numerical
predictions about the motion, including an asymmetry in the precession
signature, the behavior of pinning events, and the temperature dependence of

Depinning of a superfluid vortex line by Kelvin waves
We measure the interaction of a single superfluid vortex with surface
irregularities. While vortex pinning in superconductors usually becomes weaker
at higher temperatures, we find the opposite behavior. The pinning steadily
increases throughout our measurement range, from 0.15Tc to over 0.5Tc. We also
find that moving the other end of the vortex decreases the pinning, so we
propose Kelvin waves along the vortex as a depinning mechanism.Comment: 5 figures; substantial revision including 2 new figure
Spin operator matrix elements in the superintegrable chiral Potts quantum chain
We derive spin operator matrix elements between general eigenstates of the
superintegrable Z_N-symmetric chiral Potts quantum chain of finite length. Our
starting point is the extended Onsager algebra recently proposed by R.Baxter.
For each pair of spaces (Onsager sectors) of the irreducible representations of
the Onsager algebra, we calculate the spin matrix elements between the
eigenstates of the Hamiltonian of the quantum chain in factorized form, up to
an overall scalar factor. This factor is known for the ground state Onsager
sectors. For the matrix elements between the ground states of these sectors we
perform the thermodynamic limit and obtain the formula for the order
parameters. For the Ising quantum chain in a transverse field (N=2 case) the
factorized form for the matrix elements coincides with the corresponding
expressions obtained recently by the Separation of Variables Method.Comment: 24 pages, 1 figur
Randomised trials relevant to mental health conducted in low and middle-income countries: protocol for a survey of studies published in 1991, 1995 and 2000 and assessment of their relevance
BACKGROUND
A substantial proportion of the psychiatric burden of disease falls on the world's poorest nations. Despite this, relatively little is known about the quality and content of clinical research undertaken in these countries, or the relevance of the interventions evaluated and specifically that of randomised trials.
This project aims to survey the content, quality and accessibility of a sample of trials relevant to mental health conducted within low and middle-income countries; to compare these with studies conducted in high-income countries; and to assess their relevance for the needs of low and middle-income countries.
METHODS
An extensive search for all trials, or possible trials, published in 1991, 1995 and 2000 with participants in low and middle-income countries has already been conducted. Studies evaluating prevention or treatment of a mental health problem within these three years will be identified and further searches conducted to assess completeness of the initial search. Data on study quality and characteristics will be extracted from each report. Accessibility will be estimated based on whether each citation is available on MEDLINE. Trials relevant to schizophrenia will be compared with a random sample of schizophrenia trials from high-income countries in the same years. Topics covered by the trials will be compared with the estimated burden of disease.
CONCLUSION
Trials and systematic reviews of trials are the gold standard of evaluation of care and increasingly provide the basis for recommendations to clinicians, to providers of care and to policy makers. Results from this study will present the first assessment of the scope, quality and accessibility of mental health trials in low and middle-income countries
A Cascade Neural Network Architecture investigating Surface Plasmon Polaritons propagation for thin metals in OpenMP
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) confined along metal-dielectric interface
have attracted a relevant interest in the area of ultracompact photonic
circuits, photovoltaic devices and other applications due to their strong field
confinement and enhancement. This paper investigates a novel cascade neural
network (NN) architecture to find the dependance of metal thickness on the SPP
propagation. Additionally, a novel training procedure for the proposed cascade
NN has been developed using an OpenMP-based framework, thus greatly reducing
training time. The performed experiments confirm the effectiveness of the
proposed NN architecture for the problem at hand
Prunus serotina unleashed: invader dominance after 70 years of forest development
Propagule pressure and disturbance have both been found to facilitate invasion. Therefore, knowledge on the history of introduction and disturbance is vital for understanding an invasion process, and research should focus on areas in which the invasive species has not been deliberately introduced or managed to study unconfounded colonization patterns. Comparing the outcome of such spontaneous colonization processes for different ecosystems might provide a useful framework for setting management priorities for invasive species that enter new, uninvaded areas. We focused on the 70-year spontaneous spread of the invasive tree species Prunus serotina in a pine forest in the Netherlands. To reconstruct the invasion pattern, we combined historical maps, tree ring analysis, spatially explicit tree inventory data, seed density data, and regeneration data for both native and non-native species. Prunus serotina was the only species that showed successful regeneration: the species was present throughout the forest in the tree, shrub, and herb layer. Native species were not able to outgrow the seedling stage. Our data demonstrate that P. serotina is a gap-dependent species with high seed production that builds up a seedling bank. We also compared the results of this study with a similar study on P. serotina colonization in a deciduous forest in Belgium, where P. serotina invasion was not successful. The sharp contrast between the outcomes of the two invasion processes shows the importance of studying an invasive species and the recipient ecosystem jointly and made us raise the hypothesis that herbivore pressure may facilitate P. serotina invasio
Unraveling the Landau's consistence criterion and the meaning of interpenetration in the "Two-Fluid" Model
In this letter we show that it is possible to unravel both the physical
origin of the Landau's consistence criterion and the specific and subtle
meaning of interpenetration of the "two fluids" if one takes into account that
in the hydrodynamic regime one needs a coarse-graining in time to bring the
system into local equilibrium. That is, the fuzziness in time is relevant for
the phenomenological Landau's consistency criterion and the meaning of
interpenetration. Note also that we are not questioning the validity of the
