    Evaluation of floor vibrations induced by walking in reinforced concrete buildings

    Floor vibrations induced by human walking were investigated in a reinforced concrete structure. Six experimental floor structures were built in laboratories with the same dimensions and boundary conditions. Subjective tests were performed to assess the vibration serviceability of the floor structures. First, the subjects were asked to walk across a floor and then to rate the intensity of the vibrations, acceptability, and serviceability of the floors. In the second part of the tests, the subjects were seated on a chair placed in the middle of the floor and asked to rate floor vibrations when the walker passed the subjects. Floor vibrations induced by human walking were analyzed using peak acceleration, root mean square (r.m.s.) acceleration, and the vibration dose value (VDV), and four weighting functions (Wb, Wk, Wg, and Wm) were applied. Significant differences in the measured floor vibration were found across the floor structures, larger floor vibration lead to greater perceived vibration intensity, lower acceptability and serviceability. The Wb and Wk were found to be more applicable than Wg and Wm to explain perception of floor vibration. It was observed that the impact noise induced by walking did not influence the evaluation of floor vibratio

    The sphingosine kinase activator K6PC-5 stimulates C2C12 myoblast differentiation.

    Previously, K6PC-5, a synthetic derivative of ceramide, was demonstrated to activate sphingosine kinase (SK)-1 in keratinocytes. In this study its potential biological effect in mouse myoblasts was examined. The obtained results show that K6PC-5 promotes myogenic differentiation by enhancing myogenic marker expression, differentiation index and fusion index. Interestingly, its biological action was prevented by pharmacological inhibition of SK or S1P2 receptor, in full agreement with their recognized role in myoblast differentiation. This is the first evidence that pharmacological activation of SK accelerates myogenesis and suggests that this new therapeutic strategy could be possibly employed in skeletal muscle disorders where muscle regeneration is deficient

    Phase diagram of a probabilistic cellular automaton with three-site interactions

    We study a (1+1) dimensional probabilistic cellular automaton that is closely related to the Domany-Kinzel (DKCA), but in which the update of a given site depends on the state of {\it three} sites at the previous time step. Thus, compared with the DKCA, there is an additional parameter, p3p_3, representing the probability for a site to be active at time tt, given that its nearest neighbors and itself were active at time t1t-1. We study phase transitions and critical behavior for the activity {\it and} for damage spreading, using one- and two-site mean-field approximations, and simulations, for p3=0p_3=0 and p3=1p_3=1. We find evidence for a line of tricritical points in the (p1,p2,p3p_1, p_2, p_3) parameter space, obtained using a mean-field approximation at pair level. To construct the phase diagram in simulations we employ the growth-exponent method in an interface representation. For p3=0p_3 =0, the phase diagram is similar to the DKCA, but the damage spreading transition exhibits a reentrant phase. For p3=1p_3=1, the growth-exponent method reproduces the two absorbing states, first and second-order phase transitions, bicritical point, and damage spreading transition recently identified by Bagnoli {\it et al.} [Phys.     I review two classes of strong coupling problems in condensed matter physics, and describe insights gained by application of the AdS/CFT correspondence. The first class concerns non-zero temperature dynamics and transport in the vicinity of quantum critical points described by relativistic field theories. I describe how relativistic structures arise in models of physical interest, present results for their quantum critical crossover functions and magneto-thermoelectric hydrodynamics. The second class concerns symmetry breaking transitions of two-dimensional systems in the presence of gapless electronic excitations at isolated points or along lines (i.e. Fermi surfaces) in the Brillouin zone.     Neutron beam test of CsI crystal for dark matter search

    We have studied the response of Tl-doped and Na-doped CsI crystals to nuclear recoils and γ\gamma's below 10 keV. The response of CsI crystals to nuclear recoil was studied with mono-energetic neutrons produced by the 3^3H(p,n)3^3He reaction. This was compared to the response to Compton electrons scattered by 662 keV γ\gamma-ray. Pulse shape discrimination between the response to these γ\gamma's and nuclear recoils was studied, and quality factors were estimated. The quenching factors for nuclear recoils were derived for both CsI(Na) and CsI(Tl) crystals.Comment: 21pages, 14figures, submitted to NIM

    Annihilation Contributions in B -> K_1 gamma decay in next-to-leading order in LEET and CP-asymmetry

    The effect of weak annihilation and u-quark penguin contribution on the branching ratio B -> K_1 gamma at next-to-leading order of alpha_s are calculated using LEET approach. It is shown that the value of LEET form factor remains the same in the range of unitarity triangle phase alpha favored by the Standard Model. CP-asymmetry for above mentioned decay has been calculated and its suppression due to the hard spectator correction has also been incorporated. In addition, the sensitivity of the CP-asymmetry on the underlying parameters has been discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figure
