    Symptomatic and functional remission in young adults with a psychotic disorder in a rehabilitation focused team

    The aim of this study is to assess symptomatic remission (SR) and functional remission (FR) in a rehabilitation focused program for young adults with a psychotic disorder in the Netherlands, and to investigate which individual and mental health care (MHC) factors are associated with SR and/or FR, by using Routine Outcome Monitoring data and data on met needs and unmet needs for care. Data of 287 young adults were collected. Almost 40% achieved or maintained SR, 34% FR, and 26% achieved or maintained both. In addition to sociodemographic factors, living independently, paid employment, higher levels of compliance with treatment, and better fulfillment of unmet needs for care in relation to psychological distress, company and daytime activities were associated with better outcomes on SR and/or FR. Our findings underscore that to successfully improve and sustain remission in young adults with a psychotic disorder, it is needed to conduct specific research into the relationship between SR and FR

    Alterra onderzocht samen met Wageningen Universiteit de gevolgen van klimaat- en landgebruikverandering op lage afvoeren in de Rijn. Hiervoor maakten ze gebruik van het grond- en oppervlaktewatermodel SIMGRO. Uit het onderzoek komt naar voren dat extreme klimaatscenario’s in 2050 zullen leiden tot aanzienlijk lagere afvoeren in de Rijn en bovendien een toename in de duur. Verder blijkt dat veranderingen in het landgebruik een veel kleiner effect hebben op lage afvoeren dan veranderingen in het klimaat. Hierdoor kunnen lagere afvoeren door klimaatverandering moeilijk opgevangen worden met alleen aanpassingen in het landgebrui

    Porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder and nephrotic-range proteinuria due to venous vasculitis in Behçet's disease

    Behçet's disease (BD) is an autoinflammatory disease with multifactorial and polygenic etiology, potentially involving arteries and veins of any size resulting in variable vessel vasculitis. We report a case of an Iranian male who presented with porto-sinusoidal vascular disorder due to venous vasculitis as initial manifestation of BD. Despite immunosuppression, anticoagulation and venous recanalization, he subsequently developed severe nephrotic-range proteinuria mimicking a primary renal disease which was completely and immediately ameliorated by stenting of the vena cava. This demonstrates that the proteinuria was caused by increased intraglomerular pressure due to venous outflow obstruction as a consequence of venous vasculitis. To our knowledge, this is the first report of massive proteinuria caused by venous obstruction of the caval vein in the context of BD. Altogether, this case demonstrates the extensive spectrum of vascular disease in BD.</p

    Nodal dynamics, not degree distributions, determine the structural controllability of complex networks

    Structural controllability has been proposed as an analytical framework for making predictions regarding the control of complex networks across myriad disciplines in the physical and life sciences (Liu et al., Nature:473(7346):167-173, 2011). Although the integration of control theory and network analysis is important, we argue that the application of the structural controllability framework to most if not all real-world networks leads to the conclusion that a single control input, applied to the power dominating set (PDS), is all that is needed for structural controllability. This result is consistent with the well-known fact that controllability and its dual observability are generic properties of systems. We argue that more important than issues of structural controllability are the questions of whether a system is almost uncontrollable, whether it is almost unobservable, and whether it possesses almost pole-zero cancellations.Comment: 1 Figures, 6 page

    Fitts’ law is a well established empirical formula, known for encapsulating the “speed-accuracy trade-off”. For discrete, manual movements from a starting location to a target, Fitts’ law relates movement duration to the distance moved and target size. The widespread empirical success of the formula is suggestive of underlying principles of human movement control. There have been previous attempts to relate Fitts’ law to engineering-type control hypotheses and it has been shown that the law is exactly consistent with the closed-loop step-response of a time-delayed, first-order system. Assuming only the operation of closed-loop feedback, either continuous or intermittent, this paper asks whether such feedback should be predictive or not predictive to be consistent with Fitts law. Since Fitts’ law is equivalent to a time delay separated from a first-order system, known control theory implies that the controller must be predictive. A predictive controller moves the time-delay outside the feedback loop such that the closed-loop response can be separated into a time delay and rational function whereas a non- predictive controller retains a state delay within feedback loop which is not consistent with Fitts’ law. Using sufficient parameters, a high-order non-predictive controller could approximately reproduce Fitts’ law. However, such high-order, “non-parametric” controllers are essentially empirical in nature, without physical meaning, and therefore are conceptually inferior to the predictive controller. It is a new insight that using closed-loop feedback, prediction is required to physically explain Fitts’ law. The implication is that prediction is an inherent part of the “speed-accuracy trade-off”
