Initial Results from a Stacked Ring Apparatus for Simulation of a Soil Profile
A stack of 48 rings, lined with a latex membrane, is used to confine a column of soil 12 inches high by 12 inches in diameter (300 mm x 300 mm). Both dry and saturated columns of fine sand are shaken at their base, at a centrifugal acceleration of 35.5 g. Measurements of the settlement of the surface, horizontal displacement and pore pressures show that the columns of soil are behaving essentially (although not exactly) as one-dimensional shear beams
Isolation of Salmonella spp. and bacteriophage active against Salmonella spp. from commercial swine
Bacteriophage are viruses that prey on bacteria and may be a potential strategy to reduce foodborne pathogemc bactena in the gastromtestlnal tract of food animals Phages are fairly common in the gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem of mammals, but the incidence is unknown. If phage are to be an intervention strategy, we must understand their role in the microbial ecology of the gut. From a regulatory perspective, knowing incidence of phage is crucial. Therefore the current study was designed to determine the incidence of phage active against Salmonella spp in the feces of commercial finishing swine in the United States. Fecal samples (n=60) were collected from each of six commercial swine finishing operations. Samples were collected from 10 randomly selected pens throughout each operation. Total number of fecal samples collected in this study was n=360 Salmonella spp were found in 66% of the fecal samples Salmonella spp. were isolated from only 2 farms and the serotypes represented were Schwarzengrund, Anatum, Ohio and Heidelberg Bacteriophages were isolated from fecal sample through 2 parallel methods, 1) initlal enrichment in Salmonella Typhimunum, or 2) initial ennchment in E. colt B (a strain very sensitive to phages), followed by direct spot-testing against Salmonella Typhimurium Bacteriophages active against Salmonella Typhimunum were isolated from 1.1% 4/360) of the individual fecal samples when initially enriched in Salmonella Typhimurium, but E coli S-killing phages were 1solated from 43.8% (158/360) of the fecal samples but only 2 of these Isolates were capable of k1ll1ng Salmonella Typhimunum. Our results mdicate that bactenophage capable of killing Salmonella Typh1murium are fairly w1despread across commercial swine production facilities but may be present at relatively low populat1ons These results md1cate that phage (predator) populations may vary along w1th Salmonella (prey) populations and that phage could potentially be used as a food safety pathogen reduction strategy

Searches For High-Frequency Variations In The B-8 Solar Neutrino Flux At The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
We have performed three searches for high-frequency signals in the solar neutrino flux measured by the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, motivated by the possibility that solar g-mode oscillations could affect the production or propagation of solar B-8 neutrinos. The first search looked for any significant peak in the frequency range 1-144 day(-1), with a sensitivity to sinusoidal signals with amplitudes of 12% or greater. The second search focused on regions in which g-mode signals have been claimed by experiments aboard the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory satellite, and was sensitive to signals with amplitudes of 10% or greater. The third search looked for extra power across the entire frequency band. Seismic Performance Assessment in Dense Urban Environments: Evaluation of Nonlinear Building-Foundation Systems Using Centrifuge Tests
In dense urban areas, buildings are generally constructed in clusters, forming city blocks. New buildings are designed assuming their response is independent of adjacent buildings, which ignores potentially important structure-soil-structure-interaction (SSSI) effects. Although a few studies have revealed the significance of SSSI effects, validated simulation and design tools do not exist. In this paper, we present the results from the first in a series of centrifuge tests intended to investigate SSSI effects. Results herein are focused on the design and measured response of two model building-foundation systems placed on dense dry Nevada sand and tested at 55-g. The two models represent prototypical nine-story and three-story special moment resisting frame buildings, with the former structure supported by a three-level basement-mat and the later on isolated spread footings. Nonlinear response-history simulations are performed to aid in the design of the models, with particular attention to reproducing prototype building periods and nonlinear characteristics. Yielding of the model buildings is achieved using custom-designed fuses placed strategically throughout the superstructures. At present, the two models are placed as far apart as possible to characterize soil-structure interaction on individual buildings; subsequent experiments will move the structures in near proximity, allowing direct experimental assessment of structuresoil- structure-interaction
Earthquake Input Motions and Seismic Site Response in a Centrifuge Test Examining SFSI Effects
This paper describes the ground motion selection process and reports observed seismic site response and SFSI effects during a dynamic centrifuge test (Test-1). The centrifuge test is the first in a series of tests examining the effects of SFSI in dense urban environments. The objective of Test-1 is to examine SFSI effects for two structures that are located a significant distance apart and essentially isolated. The model structures represent a three-story building founded on spread footings and a nine-story structure founded on a threestory basement. The structures are sited on a dry, dense bed of Nevada Sand. The centrifuge model is subjected to a series of shaking events that represent near-fault and “ordinary” ground motions at a site in Los Angeles. Results show that site periods degrade as ground motion intensity increases with more pronounced degradation observed for near-fault ground motions as compared with ordinary ground motions. Additionally, the results indicate the importance of kinematic effects of embedded structures when considering SFSI effects
Combined Analysis of all Three Phases of Solar Neutrino Data from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
We report results from a combined analysis of solar neutrino data from all
phases of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. By exploiting particle
identification information obtained from the proportional counters installed
during the third phase, this analysis improved background rejection in that
phase of the experiment. The combined analysis resulted in a total flux of
active neutrino flavors from 8B decays in the Sun of (5.25 \pm
0.16(stat.)+0.11-0.13(syst.))\times10^6 cm^{-2}s^{-1}. A two-flavor neutrino
oscillation analysis yielded \Deltam^2_{21} = (5.6^{+1.9}_{-1.4})\times10^{-5}
eV^2 and tan^2{\theta}_{12}= 0.427^{+0.033}_{-0.029}. A three-flavor neutrino
oscillation analysis combining this result with results of all other solar
neutrino experiments and the KamLAND experiment yielded \Deltam^2_{21} =
(7.41^{+0.21}_{-0.19})\times10^{-5} eV^2, tan^2{\theta}_{12} =
0.446^{+0.030}_{-0.029}, and sin^2{\theta}_{13} =
(2.5^{+1.8}_{-1.5})\times10^{-2}. This implied an upper bound of
sin^2{\theta}_{13} < 0.053 at the 95% confidence level (C.L.)

Low-Multiplicity Burst Search At The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
Results are reported from a search for low-multiplicity neutrino bursts in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory. Such bursts could indicate the detection of a nearby core-collapse supernova explosion. The data were taken from Phase I (1999 November-2001 May), when the detector was filled with heavy water, and Phase II (2001 July-2003 August), when NaCl was added to the target. The search was a blind analysis in which the potential backgrounds were estimated and analysis cuts were developed to eliminate such backgrounds with 90% confidence before the data were examined. The search maintained a greater than 50% detection probability for standard supernovae occurring at a distance of up to 60 kpc for Phase I and up to 70 kpc for Phase II. Independent measurement of the total active B8 solar neutrino flux using an array of He3 proportional counters at the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory
The Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) used an array of 3He proportional counters to measure the rate of neutral-current interactions in heavy water and precisely determined the total active (νx) 8B solar neutrino flux. This technique is independent of previous methods employed by SNO. The total flux is found to be 5.54-0.31+0.33(stat)-0.34+0.36(syst)×106 cm-2 s-1, in agreement with previous measurements and standard solar models. A global analysis of solar and reactor neutrino results yields Δm2=7.59-0.21+0.19×10-5 eV2 and θ=34.4-1.2+1.3 degrees. The uncertainty on the mixing angle has been reduced from SNO’s previous results
