    Application of computational methods in the assessment of the aeroelastic response of cable supported bridges

    En este trabajo se muestra el potencial de los métodos computacionales para analizar la respuesta frente a la acción del viento de los puentes soportados por cables, y se evalúa su capacidad para sustituir a las campañas experimentales en túnel de viento, particularmente en las fases iniciales del diseño. Se ha tomado como caso de estudio el diseño preliminar propuesto para el proyecto real de un puente atirantado continuo con 2 vanos de 650 m y sección transversal en cajón. Así, se han evaluado numéricamente los coeficientes aerodinámicos de la sección transversal y se ha simulado la respuesta no estacionaria frente al desprendimiento de torbellinos utilizando software comercial de mecánica de fluidos computacional. Además, se ha analizado, mediante un código propio, la respuesta de la estructura frente a los fenómenos del flameo y el bataneo utilizando la metodología híbrida y adoptando valores de las funciones experimentales de flameo pertenecientes a una sección transversal de geometría similar. Los resultados computacionales obtenidos se han validado comparándolos con datos experimentales de puentes semejantes publicados por otros autores. Se ha comprobado que el conjunto de métodos adoptados ofrece resultados fiables con costes moderados, por lo que el planteamiento descrito es muy atractivo en la fase inicial del proyecto de puentes de gran vano o en trabajos de diseño conceptual.The possibilities of computational methods for assessing the response of cable supported bridges under wind action are considered in this work. The main objective is to study the possibilities of substituting wind tunnel campaigns by computer based analyses, particularly at the early design stage. The preliminary proposed design for a continuous cable-stayed bridge with two main spans of 650 m and a single box girder deck has been considered as a case study. The force coefficients of the deck cross-section have been computed and the unsteady response associated to vortex-shedding has been simulated using CFD commercial software. Furthermore, an in-house piece of software has been employed to obtain the response for flutter and buffeting phenomena adopting the hybrid approach; with that purpose the experimental flutter functions of a similar box girder deck were adopted. The computational results have been validated by comparison with similar experimental results published by other researchers. It has been verified that the set of adopted methods offers reliable results with moderate costs; therefore, the proposed approach is very suitable at the early design stage of long span bridges or at conceptual design works.Peer Reviewe

    Fluoride concentration in the top-selling brazilian toothpastes purchased at different regions

    To be relevant in terms of public health, widely-used toothpastes should have at least 1,000 ppm of soluble fluoride (F) concentration. Thus, the concentrations of total fluoride (TF) and total soluble fluoride (TSF) in the top-selling Brazilian toothpastes were evaluated. Samples (n=3) from toothpastes Colgate Anti-cáries®, Colgate Total 12 Clean Mint®, Colgate Tripla Ação Menta Original®, Colgate Tripla Ação Menta Suave® and Sorriso Dentes Brancos® were obtained from each of the five regions of the country. The concentrations of TF and TSF were analyzed with ion-specific electrode calibrated with F standards and the results were expressed in ppm (μg F/g). All toothpastes showed TF concentration lower than 1,500 ppm F (1,388.2 ± 25.8 to 1,483.2 ± 98.2). The TSF values were higher than 1,000 ppm F and ranged from 1,035.5 ± 61.5 to 1,221.8 ± 35.2 for calcium carbonate/monofluorophosphate-based toothpastes and from 1,455.6 ± 12.5 to 1,543.0 ± 147.3 for silica/sodium fluoride-based toothpaste.     Electrocardiographic Parameters and Fatal Arrhythmic Events in Patients With Brugada Syndrome

    Objectives This study aimed to determine the usefulness of the combination of several electrocardiographic markers on risk assessment of ventricular fibrillation (VF) in patients with Brugada syndrome (BrS). Background Detection of high-/low-risk BrS patients using a noninvasive method is an important issue in the clinical setting. Several electrocardiographic markers related to depolarization and repolarization abnormalities have been reported, but the relationship and usefulness of these parameters in VF events are unclear. Methods Baseline characteristics of 246 consecutive patients (236 men; mean age, 47.6 +/- 13.6 years) with a Brugada-type electrocardiogram, including 13 patients with a history of VF and 40 patients with a history of syncope episodes, were retrospectively analyzed. During the mean follow-up period of 45.1 months, VF in 23 patients and sudden cardiac death (SCD) in 1 patient were observed. Clinical/ genetic and electrocardiographic parameters were compared with VF/SCD events. Results On univariate analysis, a history of VF and syncope episodes, paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, spontaneous type 1 pattern in the precordial leads, and electrocardiographic markers of depolarization abnormalities (QRS duration >= 120 ms, and fragmented QRS [f-QRS]) and those of repolarization abnormalities (inferolateral early repolarization [ER] pattern and QT prolongation) were associated with later cardiac events. On multivariable analysis, a history of VF and syncope episodes, inferolateral ER pattern, and f-QRS were independent predictors of documented VF and SCD (odds ratios: 19.61, 28.57, 2.87, and 5.21, respectively; p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curves showed that the presence/ absence of inferolateral ER and f-QRS predicted a worse/better prognosis (log-rank test, p < 0.01). Conclusions The combination of depolarization and repolarization abnormalities in BrS is associated with later VF events. The combination of these abnormalities is useful for detecting high-and low-risk BrS patients

    Magnetic evolution of superactive regions. Complexity and potentially unstable magnetic discontinuities

    In this work, we have studied the temporal evolution of some properties of a sample of superactive regions with the aim to single out the most significant for flare activity forecasting. We have investigated properties of 14 superactive regions, observed between January 1st 2000 and December 31st 2006 with MDI/SOHO instrument and characterized by a particularly intense flare activity during their passage on the solar disk. We have analyzed the temporal evolution of fractal and multifractal properties of photospheric magnetic fields, namely the generalized fractal dimension and the cntribution and dimensionality diversities, as well as the potential unstable volumes of magnetic discontinuities above the studied ARs. Correlations of these quantities with the flare index, which provides information about the flare activity of a region, have also been estimated. We found that in 50 % of our sample the generalized fractal dimension is correlated with the flare index computed over windows of 50 hours, while the contribution diversity and the dimensional diversity are anticorrelated with the same index. An increase of the potential unstable volume of magnetic discontinuities in the corona is observed before the phases characterized by more frequent and intense flares. We also found that the free energy distribution functions of unstable volumes of the analyzed superactive regions can be fitted with straight lines whose slope is larger than the values found in previous works for less active magnetic regions. The generalized fractal dimension and the potential unstable volume of magnetic discontinuities are the most suitable for statistical investigations of relations with flare activity over longer (50 hours) and shorter (few hours) time intervals, respectively

    Anti-tachycardia pacing degenerated fast ventricular tachycardia into undetectable life-threatening tachyarrhythmia in a patient with non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy

    SummaryA 45-year-old man with dilated cardiomyopathy was admitted to our hospital due to congestive heart failure (CHF). Despite the optimal medical treatment, his condition had not improved because of severe left ventricular dysfunction. Because he experienced non-sustained ventricular tachycardia (VT), a biventricular implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (Bi-V ICD) was implanted for reduction of dyssynchrony and primary prevention of lethal tachyarrhythmia. After discharge, he developed CHF and was transported to our hospital by ambulance. In the ambulance, monomorphic sustained VT with 200bpm suddenly occurred. The ICD detected it as fast VT and anti-tachycardia pacing (ATP) was delivered. After the ATP therapy, RR intervals of VT became irregular and prolonged. Ventricular fibrillation-like electrical activity was recorded by a far-field electrogram from the defibrillator, but the tachycardia cycle length exceeded 400ms which is under the tachycardia detection rate. The device failed to deliver a shock and the patient had to be rescued with an external shock. This is a rare case of fast VT that degenerated into undetectable life-threatening tachyarrhythmia by ATP

    Modeling the Transport and Deposition of ¹⁰Be Produced by the Strongest Solar Proton Event During the Holocene

    Prominent excursions in the number of cosmogenic nuclides (e.g., ¹⁰Be) around 774 CE/775 document the most severe solar proton event (SPE) throughout the Holocene. Its manifestation in ice cores is valuable for geochronology, but also for solar-terrestrial physics and climate modeling. Using the ECHAM/MESSy Atmospheric Chemistry (EMAC) climate model in combination with the Warning System for Aviation Exposure to SEP (WASAVIES), we investigate the transport, mixing, and deposition of the cosmogenic nuclide ¹⁰Be produced by the 774 CE/775 SPE. By comparing the model results to the reconstructed ¹⁰Be time series from four ice core records, we study the atmospheric pathways of ¹⁰Be from its stratospheric source to its sink at Earth's surface. The reconstructed post-SPE evolution of the ¹⁰Be surface fluxes at the ice core sites is well captured by the model. The downward transport of the ¹⁰Be atoms is controlled by the Brewer-Dobson circulation in the stratosphere and cross-tropopause transport via tropopause folds or large-scale sinking. Clear hemispheric differences in the transport and deposition processes are identified. In both polar regions the ¹⁰Be surface fluxes peak in summertime, with a larger influence of wet deposition on the seasonal ¹⁰Be surface flux in Greenland than in Antarctica. Differences in the peak ¹⁰Be surface flux following the 774 CE/775 SPE at the drilling sites are explained by specific meteorological conditions depending on the geographic locations of the sites
