    The Century Survey: A Deeper Slice of the Universe

    The ``Century Survey'' (CS hereafter) is a complete redshift survey of a 1∘^\circ-wide strip. It covers 0.03 steradians to a limiting mR_R = 16.13. The survey is 98.4% complete and contains 1762 galaxies. Large-scale features in the survey are qualitatively similar to those in other surveys: there are large voids surrounded or nearly surrounded by thin dense regions which are sections of structures like (and including) the Great Wall. The survey crosses the classical Corona Borealis supercluster. The galaxy density enhancement associated with this system extends for \simgreat 100 h^{-1} Mpc (the Hubble constant is H0=100h_0 = 100h km s−1^{-1}Mpc−1^{-1}). The Schechter (1976) luminosity function parameters for the CS are: MCS∗=−20.73−0.18+0.17M^*_{CS} = -20.73 ^{+0.17}_{-0.18}, αCS=−1.17−0.19+0.19\alpha_{CS} = -1.17 ^{+0.19}_{-0.19}, and ϕCS∗=0.0250±0.0061\phi^*_{CS} = 0.0250\pm0.0061 Mpc−3^{-3}mag−1^{-1}. In concert with the ESO Key Program (\cite{vet97}; \cite{zuc97}) and the AUTOFIB (\cite{ell96}) surveys, the CS indicates that the absolute normalization of the luminosity function exceeds estimates based on shallower and/or sparser surveys.Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures, 1 plate.     The Incidence of Highly-Obscured Star-Forming Regions in SINGS Galaxies

    Using the new capabilities of the Spitzer Space Telescope and extensive multiwavelength data from the Spitzer Infrared Nearby Galaxies Survey (SINGS), it is now possible to study the infrared properties of star formation in nearby galaxies down to scales equivalent to large HII regions. We are therefore able to determine what fraction of large, infrared-selected star-forming regions in normal galaxies are highly obscured and address how much of the star formation we miss by relying solely on the optical portion of the spectrum. Employing a new empirical method for deriving attenuations of infrared-selected star-forming regions we investigate the statistics of obscured star formation on 500pc scales in a sample of 38 nearby galaxies. We find that the median attenuation is 1.4 magnitudes in H-alpha and that there is no evidence for a substantial sub-population of uniformly highly-obscured star-forming regions. The regions in the highly-obscured tail of the attenuation distribution (A_H-alpha > 3) make up only ~4% of the sample of nearly 1800 regions, though very embedded infrared sources on the much smaller scales and lower luminosities of compact and ultracompact HII regions are almost certainly present in greater numbers. The highly-obscured cases in our sample are generally the bright, central regions of galaxies with high overall attenuation but are not otherwise remarkable. We also find that a majority of the galaxies show decreasing radial trends in H-alpha attenuation. The small fraction of highly-obscured regions seen in this sample of normal, star-forming galaxies suggests that on 500pc scales the timescale for significant dispersal or break up of nearby, optically-thick dust clouds is short relative to the lifetime of a typical star-forming region.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ; emulateapj style, 30 pages, 18 figures (compressed versions), 3 table

    Iceberg topography and volume classification using TanDEM-X interferometry

    Icebergs in polar regions affect water salinity, alter marine habitats, and impose serious hazards on maritime operations and navigation. These impacts mainly depend on the iceberg volume, which remains an elusive parameter to measure. We investigate the capability of TanDEM-X bistatic single-pass synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to derive iceberg subaerial morphology and infer total volume. We cross-verify InSAR results with Operation IceBridge (OIB) data acquired near Wordie Bay, Antarctica, as part of the OIB/TanDEM-X Antarctic Science Campaign (OTASC). While icebergs are typically classified according to size based on length or maximum height, we develop a new volumetric classification approach for applications where iceberg volume is relevant. For icebergs with heights exceeding 5 m, we find iceberg volumes derived from TanDEM-X and OIB data match within 7 %. We also derive a range of possible iceberg keel depths relevant to grounding and potential impacts on subsea installations. These results suggest that TanDEM-X could pave the way for future single-pass interferometric systems for scientific and operational iceberg mapping and classification based on iceberg volume and keel depth

    The social cognition of medical knowledge, with special reference to childhood epilepsy

    This paper arose out of an engagement in medical communication courses at a Gulf university. It deploys a theoretical framework derived from a (critical) sociocognitive approach to discourse analysis in order to investigate three aspects of medical discourse relating to childhood epilepsy: the cognitive processes that are entailed in relating different types of medical knowledge to their communicative context; the types of medical knowledge that are constituted in the three different text types analysed; and the relationship between these different types of medical knowledge and the discursive features of each text type. The paper argues that there is a cognitive dimension to the human experience of understanding and talking about one specialized from of medical knowledge. It recommends that texts be studied in medical communication courses not just in terms of their discrete formal features but also critically, in terms of the knowledge which they produce, transmit and reproduce

    Arene C−H Bond Activation and Arene Oxidative Coupling by Cationic Palladium(II) Complexes

    N,N‘-Diaryl-α-diimine-ligated Pd(II) dimethyl complexes (^(tBu)2^(Ar)DAB^(Me))PdMe_2 and {(CF_3)_2^(Ar)DAB^(Me)}PdMe_2 {^(tBu)2^(Ar)DAB^(Me): ArNC═(CH_3)−C(CH_3═NAr, Ar=3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl; (CF_3)_2^(Ar)DAB^(Me):Ar = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl} undergo protonolysis with HBF_4(aq) in trifluoroethanol (TFE) to form cationic complexes [(α-diimine)Pd(CH_3)(H_2O)][BF_4]. The cations activate benzene C−H bonds at room temperature. Kinetic analyses reveal trends similar to those observed for the analogous platinum complexes:  the C−H activation step is rate-determining (KIE = 4.1 ± 0.5) and is inhibited by H_2O. The kinetic data are consistent with a mechanism in which benzene substitution proceeds by a solvent- (TFE-) assisted associative pathway. Following benzene C−H activation under 1 atm O_2, the products of the reaction are biphenyl and a dimeric ÎŒ-hydroxide complex, [(α-diimine)Pd(OH)]_2[BF_4]_2. The Pd(0) formed in the reaction is reoxidized by O_2 to the dimeric ÎŒ-hydroxide complex after the oxidative C−C bond formation.     Shigella sonnei genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis indicate recent global dissemination from Europe

    Shigella are human-adapted Escherichia coli that have gained the ability to invade the human gut mucosa and cause dysentery1,2, spreading efficiently via low-dose fecal-oral transmission3,4. Historically, S. sonnei has been predominantly responsible for dysentery in developed countries, but is now emerging as a problem in the developing world, apparently replacing the more diverse S. flexneri in areas undergoing economic development and improvements in water quality4-6. Classical approaches have shown S. sonnei is genetically conserved and clonal7. We report here whole-genome sequencing of 132 globally-distributed isolates. Our phylogenetic analysis shows that the current S. sonnei population descends from a common ancestor that existed less than 500 years ago and has diversified into several distinct lineages with unique characteristics. Our analysis suggests the majority of this diversification occurred in Europe, followed by more recent establishment of local pathogen populations in other continents predominantly due to the pandemic spread of a single, rapidly-evolving, multidrug resistant lineage

    Skittle: A 2-Dimensional Genome Visualization Tool

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is increasingly evident that there are multiple and overlapping patterns within the genome, and that these patterns contain different types of information - regarding both genome function and genome history. In order to discover additional genomic patterns which may have biological significance, novel strategies are required. To partially address this need, we introduce a new data visualization tool entitled Skittle.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This program first creates a 2-dimensional nucleotide display by assigning four colors to the four nucleotides, and then text-wraps to a user adjustable width. This nucleotide display is accompanied by a "repeat map" which comprehensively displays all local repeating units, based upon analysis of all possible local alignments. Skittle includes a smooth-zooming interface which allows the user to analyze genomic patterns at any scale.</p> <p>Skittle is especially useful in identifying and analyzing tandem repeats, including repeats not normally detectable by other methods. However, Skittle is also more generally useful for analysis of any genomic data, allowing users to correlate published annotations and observable visual patterns, and allowing for sequence and construct quality control.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Preliminary observations using Skittle reveal intriguing genomic patterns not otherwise obvious, including structured variations inside tandem repeats. The striking visual patterns revealed by Skittle appear to be useful for hypothesis development, and have already led the authors to theorize that imperfect tandem repeats could act as information carriers, and may form tertiary structures within the interphase nucleus.</p

    Hepatocyte ABCA1 Deletion Impairs Liver Insulin Signaling and Lipogenesis

    Plasma membrane (PM) free cholesterol (FC) is emerging as an important modulator of signal transduction. Here, we show that hepatocyte-specific knockout (HSKO) of the cellular FC exporter, ATPbinding cassette transporter A1 (ABCA1), leads to decreased PM FC content and defective trafficking of lysosomal FC to the PM. Compared with controls, chow-fed HSKO mice had reduced hepatic (1) insulin- stimulated Akt phosphorylation, (2) activation of the lipogenic transcription factor Sterol Regulatory Element Binding Protein (SREBP)-1c, and (3) lipogenic gene expression. Consequently, Westerntype diet-fed HSKO mice were protected from steatosis. Surprisingly, HSKO mice had intact glucose metabolism; they showed normal gluconeogenic gene suppression in response to re-feeding and normal glucose and insulin tolerance. We conclude that: (1) ABCA1 maintains optimal hepatocyte PM FC, through intracellular FC trafficking, for efficient insulin signaling; and (2) hepatocyte ABCA1 deletion produces a form of selective insulin resistance so that lipogenesis is suppressed but glucose metabolism remains normal
