    Does vitamin C prevent the effects of high dose dexmedetomidine on rat erythrocyte deformability?

The purpose of our study was to investigate whether vitamin C prevents the effect of high dose dexmedetomidine on erythrocyte deformability in rats. Methods: The study was performed on 21 male rats, with 7 rats in each study groups and the control group. The rats in the study groups were treated with intraperitoneal dexmedetomidine (10 mu g/kg) and intraperitoneal dexmedetomidine plus Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) (100 mg/kg ascorbic acid administered 1 hour before administration of 10 mu g/kg dexmedetomidine), respectively. Intraperitoneal physiological saline was administered in the control group. Erythrocyte packs were prepared using heparinized total blood samples. Deformability measurements were done by erythrocyte suspensions in phosphate buffered saline (PBS) buffer. A constant flow filtrometer system was used to measure erythrocyte deformability and the relative resistance was calculated. Results: Erythrocyte deformability was significantly higher in dexmedetomidine group than in control and vitamin C plus dexmedetomidine groups (p=0.003, p=0.013, respectively). Erythrocyte deformability indexes were found similar in the control group and in the vitamin C plus dexmedetomidine group (p=0.383) Conclusions: High dose dexmedetomidine may cause functional deterioration in blood flow and tissue perfusion with negative effects in erythrocyte deformability. Vitamin C supplementation seems to reverse those negative effects and variations in erythrocyte deformability.     Psychological status and quality of life in elderly patients with asthma

The patients with long-standing asthma (duration greater than or equal to 8 years) had lower quality-of-life scores than those with recent-onset asthma (duration < 8 years). In multivariate linear regression analysis with adjustment for age, gender, duration of disease, and level of bronchial hyperreactivity, worse quality of life was predicted by anxiety, depression, and asthma severity scores. In elderly patients with long-standing asthma, disease severity significantly impairs quality of life. Impaired quality of life in these patients may be partly related to psychological status indicators

    Carotid intima-media thickness in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and survival: A multicenter prospective study

    Introduction: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is associated with increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) is a noninvasive method assessing atherosclerosis. Objective: It was aimed to determine relationship and survival between COPD and CIMT. Methods: CIMT was measured using Doppler ultrasound (USG) in 668 stable COPD patients at 24 centers. Patients were followed-up for 2 years. Results: There were 610 patients who completed the study. There were 200 patients CIMT with &lt;0.78 mm (group 1), and 410 with CIMT ? 0.78 mm (group 2). There was a significant difference at the parameters of age, gender, smoking load, biomass exposure, GOLD groups and degree of airway obstruction (FEV1) between groups 1 and 2. Our results revealed positive correlations between mean CIMT and age, smoking load (pack-years), biomass exposure (years), exacerbation rate (last year), duration of hypertension (years) and cholesterol level; negative correlations between CIMT and FEV1 (P &lt; 0.05). According to logistic regression model, compared with group A, risk of CIMT increase was 2.2-fold in group B, 9.7-fold in group C and 4.4-fold in group D (P &lt; 0.05). Risk of CIMT increase was also related with cholesterol level (P &lt; 0.05). Compared with infrequent exacerbation, it was 2.8-fold in the patients with frequent exacerbation (P &lt; 0.05). The mean survival time was slightly higher in group 1, but not significant (23.9 vs 21.8 months) (P &gt; 0.05). Conclusion: This study is the first regarding CIMT with combined GOLD assessment groups. It has revealed important findings supporting the increase in atherosclerosis risk in COPD patients. We recommend Doppler USG of the carotid artery in COPD patients at severe stages. © 2019 John Wiley & Sons Lt

    PubMed: 16899946Alterations in blood rheology under the influence of anesthesia have been observed and discussed among the responsible factors for the deterioration of tissue and organ perfusion related to anesthetic procedures. Sevoflurane is one of the volatil anesthetics which is being used very common in surgery. In this study, the effects of sevoflurane anesthesia were investigated in different age groups of rats. 22 male rats were used in the study and the rats were divided into two groups according to their age (young and old) comprising of two subgroups in each. First group was the young control (n = 5), the second was the young group treated with sevoflurane (n = 5), the third group was the old control (n = 7) and the last group was the old group treated with sevoflurane (n = 5). %2 of sevoflurane was applied to the rats with inhalation in a adjustable cage for one hour. The deformability indexes of the erythrocytes were measured by a laser diffractometer (Myrenne Rheodyne SSD). Deformability indexes of red blood cells were significantly decreased with sevoflurane in old rats (p = 0.028) whereas it had not any significant effect in young group compared with their controls. When we compared the young and old control groups, the deformability indexes were significantly higher in old ones (p < 0.001). However, there were not any significant difference between the old and the young sevoflurane applied groups. A volatil anesthetic agent sevoflurane has impaired the deformability of erythrocytes in old rats compared to their controls, whereas it had not any significant effect in young ones which may be due to the flexibility of the young erythrocytes leading them to tolerate to the environmental changes. These results reveal that the inhalation anesthetics like sevoflurane may cause more serious problems in the elder people and their hemodynamic parameters should be checked more seriously during the surgery. © 2006 - IOS Press and the authors.
