    Effect of Reinforced Concrete Jacketing on Axial Load Capacity of Reinforced Concrete Column

    Whenever a member of a structure becomes structurally deficient, it becomes vulnerable to the existing load and for the additional loads that it may be subjected to in the coming future. Since columns are the most important structural element, the structural retrofit of columns, relative to other structural elements is of prime importance. This study intends to investigate the performance and behaviour of an RC column jacketed with Reinforced Concrete columns under axial loads. The objective of this paper is to find out the efficiency of RC jacket in enhancing the strength of an existing RC column. A mathematical design based upon Indian Standards codes has been designed to identify the behaviour of jacketed RC columns. This has been followed by a finite element based numerical simulation using the same material properties as used in the process of designing. The simulation has been done in ABAQUS software with appropriate contact modelling. The analytical model considers that there is no bond slippage between the existing and new concrete surface i.e. the bond between the existing and new concrete is assumed to be perfect. This perfect bond between the surfaces has been modelled by using appropriate constraints in ABAQUS software. The finite element models show fair agreement with the designed values in terms of ultimate capacity and failure mode. The load bearing capacity enhancement of the RC jacketed column has been found to increase substantially. The enhancement capacity results obtained from the finite element software differs about 16-25% from the design values

    LOW LATENCY 5G/LTE MOBILE FRONTHAUL TRAFFIC IN TDMPON/XGS-PON NETWORKS

    Ensuring low latency in a passive optical network (PON) environment for a mobile fronthaul use case is critical and raises a number of challenges. To address those types of challenges, techniques are presented herein that support, among other things, the coordination between a PON scheduler and a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) or Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) Fifth Generation (5G) scheduler where the expected traffic in an uplink direction is intimated in advance to the PON scheduler. Such advance knowledge of a bandwidth scheduling requirement in an upstream direction eliminates, for example, the serialization of scheduler latency. Aspects of the techniques presented herein encompass, among other things, the development of a phase relationship between a PON superframe counter (SFC) and a time service, the determination of a bandwidth demand, the exchange of developed information (employing, for example, a variable-sized extension header or a fixed-sized custom header and vendor-specific message types), the creation of a mapping between a transmission container (TCONT) and a flow identifier, etc

    Comparison of Radiological and Clinical Outcomes between Expandable and Non-expandable Cages Following Cervical Corpectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

    Anterior cervical corpectomy and fusion is considered the mainstay of surgical treatment in cervical pathology. Expandable and non-expandable cages are preferred over autogenous bone graft because of donor-related morbidity. However, the choice of the cage type remains a debatable topic as studies report conflicting results. Thus, we evaluated the outcomes of expandable and non-expandable cages following cervical corpectomy. Studies were searched in various electronic databases (MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Scopus, and Cochrane) between 2011 and 2021. Forest plot was made to compare the radiological and clinical outcomes between expandable and non-expandable cages following cervical corpectomy. Altogether, 26 studies (1,170 patients) were included in the meta-analysis. The mean change in segmental angle was significantly greater in the expandable cage group than in the non-expandable cage group (6.7° vs. 3.0°, p0.05). The improvement in segmental angle is better with expandable cages. Higher subsidence is a major problem with non-expandable cages, but it seems to be beneficial as evidenced by the high fusion rate and minimal effect on clinical outcome in patients with this cage

    Therapeutic plasma exchange in acute fatty liver of pregnancy: a case report and literature review

    Acute fatty liver of pregnancy(AFLP) is characterised by acute liver failure that occurs most commonly in the third trimester of pregnancy. Emergent delivery of the foetus reverses liver failure in most cases. Rarely, termination of pregnancy may not reverse liver failure, and adjunct interventions may be required. Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) has been described in AFLP in very few reports. We describe a patient in whom liver failure and extrahepatic organ failure persisted four days after delivery. She underwent TPE for persistent liver failure which resulted in prompt clinical improvement. We propose that TPE be considered as a measure to salvage AFLP patients with liver failure that does not reverse after termination of pregnancy

    An overview on economic machining of hardened steels by hard turning and its process variables

    Producers of machined components and manufactured goods are continually challenged to reduce cost, improve quality, and minimize setup times in order to remain competitive. Frequently the answer is found with new technology solutions. In the recent years, there has been increasing interest in hard turning over grinding for machining of hardened steels in automotive, bearing, mold-die making industries. Hard turning is greatly affected by factors like machine tool, cutting tool geometry and materials, cutting parameters, and cooling methods. There are some issues in the process which should be understood and dealt with such as friction and heat generation at the cutting area that can affect the tool life and surface finish apart from other machining results to achieve successful performance. Researchers have worked upon several aspects related to hard turning and came up with their own recommendations to overcome these problems. This article presents an overview on all the factors that influences hard turning operations performance and is an attempt to give a proper understanding of the process. A summary of the hard turning techniques is outlined and further a comparison of hard turning and grinding is discussed with regard to certain evaluation criteria based on process economical efficiency

    Bombax ceiba calyces regulate carbohydrate and lipid digesting enzyme’s actions, display insulin sensitizing and antioxidant activities in vitro: A nutritional and phytochemicals examination

    323-331Calyces of Bombax ceiba (Śālmali, शाल्मली) are used as vegetable by traditional Indian folks. However, scientific investigations for this vegetable are not available in literature. This research presents nutritional and phytochemicals composition in raw calyxes’ powder and antihyperglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, insulin-sensitizing and, antioxidant properties in aqueous methanolic extract of calyx applying various in vitro methods. Calyx powder displayed rich source of macro- and micronutrients with energy value 322 Kcal. /100 g. Aqueous methanol extract of calyces exhibited potent antihyperglycemic activities by inhibiting pancreatic α-amylase and intestinal α-glucosidase enzymes, antihyperlipidemic by inhibiting pancreatic lipase and insulin sensitizing property by inhibiting PTP1β. It was found to be potent scavenger of chemical and physiological free radicals and, presented antioxidant activities by preventing H2O2 induced erythrocytes membrane lipid peroxidation and hemolysis. It also prevented H2O2 induced genomic DNA damage. The calyx powder presented 979 μg/100 g total antioxidant value.     Raphanus sativus (Linn.) fresh juice priming moderates sucrose-induced postprandial glycemia as well as postprandial glycemic excursion in rats

    339-345Consumption of sugar sweetened beverages increase individual’s susceptibility towards weight gain, development of Type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, cardiovascular disorders and number of chronic illnesses. Extended postprandial hyperglycemic rise and larger postprandial glycemic spikes following sugar ingestion in diabetic as well as non-diabetic individuals relate with the onset of cardiovascular complications and development of atherosclerosis. Oxidative stress induced due to prolonged postprandial hyperglycemia further aggravates development of diabetic complications. Influence of Raphanus sativus leaf and root juice on sucrose induced postprandial glycemic rise and postprandial glycemic spikes in rats was evaluated in this research. It was observed that priming rats with R. sativus leaf and root juice assuaged sucrose induced postprandial glycemic rise and postprandial glycemic excursions. The juice of R. sativus leaf was found superior than root juice in achieving these results. Similarly, the juice of leaves was more potent (pR. sativus leaf and root was rich source of polyphenol, flavonoid and displayed potent free radical scavenging activity. Additionally, juices also mitigated formation of advance glycation end-products and glycation of hemoglobin under hyperglycemic environment
