    An Effective Training and Evaluation Method for Anchoring Training in Maritime Education

    Captain Kashima et al. showed that ship handling skills significantly improve when anchoring exercises are practiced on training ships. And Kunieda et al. showed that the practicing on training ships also develops critical thinking and problem-solving skills. We created an evaluation scale for elementary ship handling skills to measure the effects of different anchoring training methods. We assessed the training methods using a rubric evaluation list containing nine evaluation items. Group work was arranged before and after the anchoring training sessions based on the results from student questionnaires and instructor evaluations. Our results reveal the most effective training model for developing ship handling skills

    Mutation of the N-terminal proline 9 of BLMA from Streptomyces verticillus abolishes the binding affinity for bleomycin

    AbstractA gene, blmA, from bleomycin (Bm)-producing Streptomyces verticillus, encodes a Bm-binding protein, designated BLMA. The expression of BLMA conferred resistance to Bm in the Escherichia coli host, whereas a mutant protein, designated Pro-9/Leu, with the N-terminal proline 9 residue in BLMA replaced by leucine, did not. We created a fusion protein between the maltose-binding protein (MBP) and a mutant protein Pro-9/Leu/Leu with Met-94 in Pro-9/Leu replaced by leucine. Pro-9/Leu/Leu from the fusion protein, obtained by digestion with CNBr digestion, did not inhibit DNA-cleaving and antibacterial activities of Bm. Native-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) and gel filtration column chromatographic analysis showed that the molecular size of Pro-9/Leu/Leu is roughly half of that of BLMA, suggesting that the mutant protein cannot form dimeric structure. Furthermore, Far-UV circular dichroism (CD) spectrum of Pro-9/Leu/Leu was quite different from that of BLMA and similar to the spectra obtained from unordered proteins [Venyaminov, S.Y. and Vassilenko, K.S. (1994) Anal. Biochem. 222, 176–184], suggesting that the secondary structure of Pro-9/Leu/Leu is disrupted. These results indicate that the mutation abolishes not only dimer formation but also the secondary structure of BLMA, which results in the loss of its function as a Bm-resistance determinant

    Study on nutrient supply in relation to feeding system of buffalo in Chitwan, Nepal

    Livestock farming in Nepal, especially buffalo farming alone contributes a major share in livelihoods of farmers. Stall feeding of buffalo is common in Chitwan with occasional grazing. This raises questions about status of nutrients supplied to maintain productivity as feed resources varied in forest and crop land according to the season. A study was carried out in Chitwan from April 2015 to March 2016 to find out the status of nutrient supply in relation to the feeding system of buffalo. Total fifteen farms were selected from three villages, the amount of feedstuff fed to the animals was measured every month and the nutrient contents of the feed were analyzed. The mean concentrations of DM, CP, TDN, Ca and P were 641g/kg, 75.0 g/kg, 462 g/kg, 4.9 g/kg and 4.2 g/kg. A significant difference of CP contents among the villages was observed (72.0 g/kg, 70.7 g/kg and 81.2 g/kg (P<0.01), and the highest content of CP, TDN, Ca and P were found in July (P<0.05)). The study showed variation in nutrient supplied, irrespective of the status and condition of buffalo in the farms which need to be considered to maintain productivity of the animals

    Carbon footprint assessment of a whole dairy farming system with a biogas plant and the use of solid fraction of digestate as a recycled bedding material

    Biogas generated from livestock manure is a renewable energy source and the digestate is used as a fertilizer. Moreover, dewatered biogas digestate can be used as a bedding material (recycled bedding material). The aims of the present study were to model a whole dairy system with a biogas plant using recycled bedding material and to assess the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Emissions from the material flow of dairy cattle production, manure treatment and organic fertilizer application to on-farm crops were evaluated. In the emissions from organic fertilizer storage and recycled bedding material production, CH4 emission was decreased by 43.0%, and consequently the system with a biogas plant reduced total GHG emissions by 6.8% compared with conventional slurry storage and straw bedding. The use of recycled bedding material from a biogas plant has the potential to create a resource cycle and to be beneficial as a GHG mitigation strategy

    Effect of entanglement on the decay dynamics of a pair of H(2p) atoms due to spontaneous emission

    We have measured the coincidence time spectra of two Lyman-α photons emitted by a pair of H(2p) atoms in the photodissociation of H2 at the incident photon energy of 33.66 eV and at the hydrogen gas pressures of 0.40 and 0.02 Pa. The decay time constant at 0.02 Pa is approximately half the lifetime of a single H(2p) atom, 1.60 ns, while the decay time constant at 0.40 Pa is in agreement with the lifetime of a single H(2p) atom. It turns out that the decay faster than the lifetime of a single H(2p) atom originates from the entanglement in the pair of H(2p) atoms.     Comparison between regional lung CT values and lung densities estimated using EIT

    In this paper we report the results of our study in which we compared lung density values obtained from EIT and CT values (HU) within a region of interest. The purpose was to verify clinical use of lung density estimation using EIT data. Image resolution of CT images, which was originally 512*512 pixels, was changed to 16*16 pixels, to match that of the EIT images. The CT and EIT images were recorded from eight patients in an intensive care unit and the results showed a correlation coefficient of 0.66 (p<0.05) between the CT values (HU) and the lung density values (kg/m3) obtained from EIT

    Angular momentum in rotating superfluid droplets

    The angular momentum of rotating superfluid droplets originates from quantized vortices and capillary waves, the interplay between which remains to be uncovered. Here, the rotation of isolated submicrometer superfluid 4He droplets is studied by ultrafast x-ray diffraction using a free electron laser. The diffraction patterns provide simultaneous access to the morphology of the droplets and the vortex arrays they host. In capsule-shaped droplets, vortices form a distorted triangular lattice, whereas they arrange along elliptical contours in ellipsoidal droplets. The combined action of vortices and capillary waves results in droplet shapes close to those of classical droplets rotating with the same angular velocity. The findings are corroborated by density functional theory calculations describing the velocity fields and shape deformations of a rotating superfluid cylinder
