    Positron trapping kinetics in thermally generated vacancy donor complexes in highly As-doped silicon

    We have measured positron lifetime and Doppler broadening in highly As-doped silicon containing thermally generated V−As3 defect complexes (vacancy is surrounded by three arsenic atoms). We observe positron detrapping from the V−As3 defect complex and determine the binding energy of 0.27 eV of a positron to the complex. The results explain why 85% of the thermal vacancies formed in highly As-doped Si at temperatures over 700 K are invisible to positron measurements at elevated temperatures.Peer reviewe

    Evidence of a second acceptor state of the E center in Si1-x Gex

    We have found evidence of a second acceptor state of the E center in Si1-x Gex by using positron annihilation spectroscopy. To achieve this, we studied proton irradiated n-type Si1−x Gex with a Ge content of 10%–30% and a P dopant concentration of 10 exp 18cm exp −3, in which the number of Ge atoms around irradiation induced E centers was increased by annealing. When measuring the Doppler broadening of the annihilation line, the shape parameter S starts to decrease at 150 K with decreasing measurement temperature. This indicates that a charge transition in the upper half of the Si1−x Gex band gap, above the well known (0/−) level, takes place. Hence, we suggest that the increased concentration of germanium around the E center pulls down the localized second acceptor state into the Si1−x Gex band gap, making the Ge decorated E center a more effective trap for conduction electrons.Peer reviewe

    Divacancy clustering in neutron-irradiated and annealed n-type germanium

    We have studied the annealing of vacancy defects in neutron-irradiated germanium. After irradiation, the Sb-doped samples [(Sb)=1.5×10 exp 15 cm exp −3] were annealed at 473, 673, and 773 K for 30 min. The positron lifetime was measured as a function of temperature (30–295 K). A lifetime component of 330 ps with no temperature dependence is observed in as-irradiated samples, identified as the positron lifetime in a neutral divacancy and indicating that the divacancy is stable at room temperature (RT). Annealing at 673 K resulted in an increase in the average positron lifetime, and in addition, the annealed samples further showed a larger lifetime component of 430 ps at RT, which is due to larger vacancy clusters. The average positron lifetime in the samples annealed at 473 K has a definite temperature dependence, suggesting that the divacancies become negative as the crystal recovers and the Fermi level moves upwards in the band gap. Annealing at 673 K, reduces the average lifetime and intensity of the defect component τ2 at RT, indicating that the vacancy clusters have started to anneal. Negative divacancies are still present in the samples after this anneal. Annealing at 773 K is enough to remove all observable vacancy defects.Peer reviewe

    Stabilization of Ge-rich defect complexes originating from E centers in Si1- xGex:P

    Thermal evolution of vacancy complexes was studied in P-doped ([P]=10 exp 18 cm exp −3) proton irradiated Si1−xGex with Ge contents of 10%, 20%, and 30% in the range of 250–350 °C using positron annihilation spectroscopy. The radiation damage recovers in the course of anneals but the final state differs from that in as-grown samples indicating the presence of small Ge clusters in the samples, contrary to the initially random Ge distribution. The activation energy for the annealing process was estimated to be 1.4±0.3 eV and attributed to the dissociation energy of the vacancy-phosphorus-germanium (V-P-Ge) complex.Peer reviewe

    Childhood BMI in relation to microbiota in infancy and lifetime antibiotic use

    Background: Children with high body mass index (BMI) at preschool age are at risk of developing obesity. Early identification of factors that increase the risk of excessive weight gain could help direct preventive actions. The intestinal microbiota and antibiotic use have been identified as potential modulators of early metabolic programming and weight development. To test if the early microbiota composition is associated with later BMI, and if antibiotic use modifies this association, we analysed the faecal microbiota composition at 3 months and the BMI at 5-6 years in two cohorts of healthy children born vaginally at term in the Netherlands (N = 87) and Finland (N = 75). We obtained lifetime antibiotic use records and measured weight and height of all children. Results: The relative abundance of streptococci was positively and the relative abundance of bifidobacteria negatively associated with the BMI outcome. The association was especially strong among children with a history of antibiotic use. Bacteroides relative abundance was associated with BMI only in the children with minimal lifetime antibiotic exposure. Conclusions: The intestinal microbiota of infants are predictive of later BMI and may serve as an early indicator of obesity risk. Bifidobacteria and streptococci, which are indicators of microbiota maturation in infants, are likely candidates for metabolic programming of infants, and their influence on BMI appears to depend on later a\ntibiotic use.Peer reviewe

    Epitaxial thin film CuGaSe2 and CuInSe2 samples grown on GaAs substrates with varying [Cu]/[Ga,In] ratios were studied using positron annihilation Doppler-broadening spectroscopy and were compared to bulk crystals. We find both Cu monovacancies and Cu-Se divacancies in CuInSe2, whereas, in CuGaSe2, the only observed vacancy defect is the Cu-Se divacancy.Peer reviewe

    Vacancy generation in liquid phase epitaxy of Si

    Concerted experiments and theoretical analysis are applied to conclusively demonstrate the vacancy generation during fast melting and regrowth of Si by laser irradiation. Experiments, based on the positron annihilation spectroscopy and designed to test the theoretical predictions, evidence a vacancy supersaturation after the laser process depending on the irradiation conditions. Stochastic atomistic simulations of the molten Si recrystallization show trapping of vacancies in the recrystallized region. Finally, continuum phase-field simulations of the full process, calibrated using the Monte Carlo results, show a defect evolution in close agreement with the experiments.Peer reviewe

    Alcohol Approach Bias Is Associated With Both Behavioral and Neural Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer Effects in Alcohol-Dependent Patients

    BACKGROUND: Even after qualified detoxification, alcohol-dependent (AD) patients may relapse to drinking alcohol despite their decision to abstain. Two mechanisms may play important roles. First, the impact of environmental cues on instrumental behavior (i.e., Pavlovian-to-instrumental transfer [PIT] effect), which was found to be stronger in prospectively relapsing AD patients than in abstaining patients. Second, an automatic approach bias toward alcohol stimuli was observed in AD patients, and interventions targeting this bias reduced the relapse risk in some studies. Previous findings suggest a potential behavioral and neurobiological overlap between these two mechanisms. METHODS: In this study, we examined the association between alcohol approach bias and both behavioral and neural non–drug-related PIT effects in AD patients after detoxification. A total of 100 AD patients (17 females) performed a PIT task and an alcohol approach/avoidance task. Patients were followed for 6 months. RESULTS: A stronger alcohol approach bias was associated with both a more pronounced behavioral PIT effect and stronger PIT-related neural activity in the right nucleus accumbens. Moreover, the association between alcohol approach bias and behavioral PIT increased with the severity of alcohol dependence and trait impulsivity and was stronger in patients who relapsed during follow-up in the exploratory analysis. CONCLUSIONS: A stronger alcohol approach bias was associated with both a more pronounced behavioral PIT effect and stronger PIT-related neural activity in the right nucleus accumbens. Moreover, the association between alcohol approach bias and behavioral PIT increased with the severity of alcohol dependence and trait impulsivity and was stronger in patients who relapsed during follow-up in the exploratory analysis

    Small- bowel mucosal changes and antibody responses after low- and moderate-dose gluten challenge in celiac disease

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Due to the restrictive nature of a gluten-free diet, celiac patients are looking for alternative therapies. While drug-development programs include gluten challenges, knowledge regarding the duration of gluten challenge and gluten dosage is insufficient.</p> <p>We challenged adult celiac patients with gluten with a view to assessing the amount needed to cause some small-bowel mucosal deterioration.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Twenty-five celiac disease adults were challenged with low (1-3 g) or moderate (3-5g) doses of gluten daily for 12 weeks. Symptoms, small-bowel morphology, densities of CD3+ intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) and celiac serology were determined.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Both moderate and low amounts of gluten induced small-bowel morphological damage in 67% of celiac patients. Moderate gluten doses also triggered mucosal inflammation and more gastrointestinal symptoms leading to premature withdrawals in seven cases. In 22% of those who developed significant small- intestinal damage, symptoms remained absent. Celiac antibodies seroconverted in 43% of the patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Low amounts of gluten can also cause significant mucosal deterioration in the majority of the patients. As there are always some celiac disease patients who will not respond within these conditions, sample sizes must be sufficiently large to attain to statistical power in analysis.</p
