An Efficiently Solvable Quadratic Program for Stabilizing Dynamic Locomotion

We describe a whole-body dynamic walking controller implemented as a convex quadratic program. The controller solves an optimal control problem using an approximate value function derived from a simple walking model while respecting the dynamic, input, and contact constraints of the full robot dynamics. By exploiting sparsity and temporal structure in the optimization with a custom active-set algorithm, we surpass the performance of the best available off-the-shelf solvers and achieve 1kHz control rates for a 34-DOF humanoid. Teaching Bayesian Model Comparision with the Three-Sided Coin

In the present work we introduce the problem of determining the probability that a rotating and bouncing cylinder (i.e. flipped coin) will land and come to rest on its edge. We present this problem and analysis as a practical, nontrivial example to introduce the reader to Bayesian model comparison. Several models are presented, each of which take into consideration different physical aspects of the problem and the relative effects on the edge landing probability. The Bayesian formulation of model comparison is then used to compare the models and their predictive agreement with data from hand-flipped cylinders of several sizes

Policy briefing:further strategies for smart specialisation of the North Sea region

This report uses experience gained during the EU Interreg IVB project ITRACT and shares transnational learning on how to deploy IT-based solutions as part of Smart Specialisation Strategies, for example, while creating answers to societal challenges. ITRACT concentrates on rural areas, where the availability of an adequate digital infrastructure is often lacking and where people may lack the digital skills and literacy to adopt the smart solutions (known as Intelligent Transport Services; ITS) offered. Maatschappelijke weerstand: Een issue voor terreinbeheerders in de keuze om houtige biomassa te oogsten?

In het werkprogramma ‘Nieuwe energie voor het klimaat: schoon en zuinig’ kondigde het toenmalige kabinet in 2007 aan dat het wil inzetten op 30% CO2 reductie in 2020 (ten opzichte 1990) en op 20% duurzame energie in 2020. Eind 2010 blijft de houtoogst voor biomassadoeleinden achter bij de doelstelling. Een argument voor het achterblijvende aanbod van biomassa voor energieproductie is de lage prijs. Enkele terreinbeheerders geven aan niet graag hout te oogsten voor biomassadoeleinden omdat ze dit associëren met houtchips en afvalproducten. Daar willen terreinbeheerders niet mee bezig zijn. Veel beheerders hebben meer affiniteit met het produceren en verkopen van een ‘mooi product als hout’ dan met een ‘afvalproduct als houtchip

Ruimte voor elkaar: Een essay over decentralisatie in het natuurbeleid

This project concerns an analysis of recent developments regarding decentralisation in national nature policy. We see decentralisation here as a transfer of tasks. But it is a multifaceted issue. As a 'decentralised single state', the Netherlands is traditionally characterised by co-government. We look at four policy dossiers here: 1) the Nature Conservancy Act, 2) the Impulse for Species Policy, 3) the Investment Budget for Rural Areas, 4) the Spatial Policy Document. An important finding is that a more definite link is required between the decentralised character of decision-making and the conditions for working in practice within the networks. Dit project betreft een analyse van recente ontwikkelingen rond de decentralisatie in het nationale natuurbeleid. Decentralisatie zien we hier als overdracht van taken. Maar het is een veelzijdig vraagstuk. Nederland als een 'gedecentraliseerde eenheidsstaat' heeft altijd te maken met uitvoering in medebewind. We behandelen hier vier beleidsdossiers: 1) de Natuurbeschermingswet, 2) de Impuls voor het Soortenbeleid, 3) het Investeringsbudget Landelijk Gebied, 4) de Nota Ruimte.
