    ‘That’s when we started using the living room’ : lessons from a local history of domestic heating in the United Kingdom

    Indoor climate control forms a major share of residential energy demand. Policy measures to curb this demand tend to focus on energy-efficient technologies. However, while the energy efficiency of domestic heat provision in the United Kingdom (UK) has increased considerably over the past century, demand for space heating has increased as well. This paper offers a distinctive explanation of increasing levels of domestic demand for space heating. It is grounded in a case study on changes in social housing design and use in the UK between 1920 and 1970. Based on detailed analysis of the co-evolution of housing circumstances, heating provision and patterns of everyday practice, the paper argues that increases in demand for space heating can be understood as a spreading of such demand over domestic space and time. In explaining this spread, it identifies three key contributing processes, comprising: 1) materialisations of ideals of separating domestic activities; 2) delegations of work and control to infrastructures and appliances; and 3) shifts towards more indoor, sedentary activities. It closes by considering how understanding these processes historically can inform contemporary energy policy to curb domestic energy demand for heating, and how the distinctive approach taken has implications for energy research

    Comparison of 2D and 3D calculation of left ventricular torsion as circumferential-longitudinal shear angle using cardiovascular magnetic resonance tagging

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Purpose</p> <p>To compare left ventricular (LV) torsion represented as the circumferential-longitudinal (CL) shear angle between 2D and 3D quantification, using cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>CMR tagging was performed in six healthy volunteers. From this, LV torsion was calculated using a 2D and a 3D method. The cross-correlation between both methods was evaluated and comparisons were made using Bland-Altman analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The cross-correlation between the curves was <it>r</it><sup>2 </sup>= 0.97 ± 0.02. No significant time-delay was observed between the curves. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a significant positive linear relationship between the difference and the average value of both analysis methods, with the 2D results showing larger values than the 3D. The difference between both methods can be explained by the definition of the 2D method.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>LV torsion represented as CL shear quantified by the 2D and 3D analysis methods are strongly related. Therefore, it is suggested to use the faster 2D method for torsion calculation.</p

    Arbitrary Arrow Update Logic

    In this paper we introduce arbitrary arrow update logic (AAUL). The logic AAUL takes arrow update logic, a dynamic epistemic logic where the accessibility relations of agents are updated rather than the set of possible worlds, and adds a quantifier over such arrow updates. We investigate the relative expressivity of AAUL compared to other logics, most notably arbitrary public announcement logic (APAL). Additionally, we show that the model checking problem for AAUL is PSPACE-complete. Finally, we introduce a proof system for AAUL, and prove it to be sound and complete

    Non-Covalently Stabilized Alginate Hydrogels as Functional Cell Scaffold Material

    Biopolymers are an attractive class of compounds for being used in biomedical applications as they are widely available from biomass. Their drawback is the lack of mechanical stability and the ability to tune this properly. Covalent chemical cross-linking is an often used approach but it limits usability due to legislation as well as the need of advanced and specialized knowledge by end users such as clinicians. Here, increased and tunable mechanical properties are achieved of alginate-based hydrogels with non-covalent approaches using linear polyethyleneimine (LPEI) as a polyelectrolyte rather than only multivalent metal ions (Ca2+). Gel stiffness increases with increasing LPEI content. Gel morphology changes from a thin fibrous mesh for alginate-Ca2+ to thicker fibrous networks when LPEI is introduced. The gels are able to efficiently release encapsulated small molecular dyes and the gels are able to host cells. For the cell encapsulation human skin fibroblasts (HSkF) and human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSC) are used. HSkF can be successfully incorporated without diminished viability while the matrix components and gel preparation method are not compatible with hBM-MSC. The newly developed alginate-based system is regarded as a potential candidate for wound dressing materials

    Conductive Cooling of SDD and SSD Front-End Chips for ALICE

    We present analysis, technology developments and test results of the heat drain system of the SDD and SSD front-end electronics for the ALICE Inner Tracker System (ITS). Application of super thermoconductive carbon fibre thin plates provides a practical solution for the development of miniature motherboards for the FEE chips situated inside the sensitive ITS volume. Unidirectional carbon fibre motherboards of 160 -300 micron thickness ensure the mounting of the FEE chips and an efficient heat sink to the cooling arteries. Thermal conductivity up to 1.3 times better than copper is achieved while preserving a negligible multiple scattering contribution by the material (less than 0.15 percent of X/Xo)
