    The essay is a revision of a paper originally prepared for a joint consultation between the LSMC, the Student Christian Movement and Yanik (a student group in Quebec) held in Montreal in February, 1977. Written shortly after the death of Donald H Voigts, former executive secretary of the Divisions of Educational Service and Campus Foundation Activity of the Lutheran Council in Canada, it was compiled with a view to beginning a process of reflection upon the historical development of the LSMC and of campus ministry in Canada

    Estimated Emergency and Observational/Quarantine Capacity Need for the US Homeless Population Related to COVID-19 Exposure by County; Projected Hospitalizations, Intensive Care Units and Mortality

    This report estimates the potential hospitalization, ICU use and mortality rates associated with COVID-19 infection among the homeless population in the United States, as well as unmet need for emergency and observational/quarantine beds/units. Results project that homeless individuals infected by COVID-19 would be twice as likely to be hospitalized, two to four times as likely to require critical care, and two to three times as likely to die than the general population. The analysis suggests that 400,000 new beds are needed to meet the emergency accommodation and social distancing needs of the single adult homeless population on a given day, and that the total estimated cost to meet the nation’s emergency shelter and observational/quarantine units need is approximately $11.5 billion for one year. The second edition explores alternatives for emergency accommodation including private accommodations, congregate shelters, sheltering in place, and emergency coordination of care.

    An investigation was conducted in order to determine the effectiveness of blowing a jet of air over the flaps of a wing equipped with a 50-percent-chord sliding flap and a 25-percent-chord plain flap in deflecting a propeller slipstream downward for vertical take-off and the results are presented herein. The effects of a leading-edge slat, ground proximity, end plate, and propeller position were also investigated. The tests were conducted in a static-thrust facility at the Langley Aeronautical Laboratory

    Unraveling the Activation Mechanism of the Potato Tuber ADP-glucose Pyrophosphorylase

    ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase regulates the synthesis of glycogen in bacteria and of starch in plants. The enzyme from plants is mainly activated by 3-phosphoglycerate and is a heterotetramer comprising two small and two large subunits. Here, we found that two highly conserved residues are critical for triggering the activation of the potato tuber ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase, as shown by site-directed mutagenesis. Mutations in the small subunit, which bears the catalytic function in this potato tuber form, had a more dramatic effect on disrupting the allosteric activation than those introduced in the large subunit, which is mainly modulatory. Our results strongly agree with a model where the modified residues are located in loops responsible for triggering the allosteric activation signal for this enzyme, and the sensitivity to this activation correlates with the dynamics of these loops. In addition, previous biochemical data indicates that the triggering mechanism is widespread in the enzyme family, even though the activator and the quaternary structure are not conserved.Fil: Figueroa, Carlos Maria.     A Look at the Generalized Heron Problem through the Lens of Majorization-Minimization

    In a recent issue of this journal, Mordukhovich et al.\ pose and solve an interesting non-differentiable generalization of the Heron problem in the framework of modern convex analysis. In the generalized Heron problem one is given k+1k+1 closed convex sets in \Real^d equipped with its Euclidean norm and asked to find the point in the last set such that the sum of the distances to the first kk sets is minimal. In later work the authors generalize the Heron problem even further, relax its convexity assumptions, study its theoretical properties, and pursue subgradient algorithms for solving the convex case. Here, we revisit the original problem solely from the numerical perspective. By exploiting the majorization-minimization (MM) principle of computational statistics and rudimentary techniques from differential calculus, we are able to construct a very fast algorithm for solving the Euclidean version of the generalized Heron problem.Comment: 21 pages, 3 figure
