Implementation of a Standardized Handoff System for a General Surgery Residency Program

    Get PDF
Introduction: The I-PASS Handoff Bundle is an evidence based standardized set of educational materials designed to decrease handoff failures in patient care. Two of every three sentinel events , the most serious events reported to the Joint Commission, are due to failures of communication, including miscommunication during patient care handoffs. Implementation of the I-PASS method results in decreased medical errors and preventable adverse events There are few studies that evaluate this validated method in the context of a General Surgery resident program We aim to implement the I-PASS system into the transition of care process for General Surgery residents at our institution, and to analyze of the quality of the handoff process before and after the implementation.https://jdc.jefferson.edu/patientsafetyposters/1047/thumbnail.jp

A unifying framework for seed sensitivity and its application to subset seeds

    Get PDF
We propose a general approach to compute the seed sensitivity, that can be applied to different definitions of seeds. It treats separately three components of the seed sensitivity problem -- a set of target alignments, an associated probability distribution, and a seed model -- that are specified by distinct finite automata. The approach is then applied to a new concept of subset seeds for which we propose an efficient automaton construction. Experimental results confirm that sensitive subset seeds can be efficiently designed using our approach, and can then be used in similarity search producing better results than ordinary spaced seeds

    Dictionary Matching with One Gap

The dictionary matching with gaps problem is to preprocess a dictionary DD of dd gapped patterns P1,,PdP_1,\ldots,P_d over alphabet Σ\Sigma, where each gapped pattern PiP_i is a sequence of subpatterns separated by bounded sequences of don't cares. Then, given a query text TT of length nn over alphabet Σ\Sigma, the goal is to output all locations in TT in which a pattern PiDP_i\in D, 1id1\leq i\leq d, ends. There is a renewed current interest in the gapped matching problem stemming from cyber security. In this paper we solve the problem where all patterns in the dictionary have one gap with at least α\alpha and at most β\beta don't cares, where α\alpha and β\beta are given parameters. Specifically, we show that the dictionary matching with a single gap problem can be solved in either O(dlogd+D)O(d\log d + |D|) time and O(dlogεd+D)O(d\log^{\varepsilon} d + |D|) space, and query time O(n(βα)loglogdlog2min{d,logD}+occ)O(n(\beta -\alpha )\log\log d \log ^2 \min \{ d, \log |D| \} + occ), where occocc is the number of patterns found, or preprocessing time and space: O(d2+D)O(d^2 + |D|), and query time O(n(βα)+occ)O(n(\beta -\alpha ) + occ), where occocc is the number of patterns found. As far as we know, this is the best solution for this setting of the problem, where many overlaps may exist in the dictionary.Comment: A preliminary version was published at CPM 201

On subset seeds for protein alignment

    Get PDF
We apply the concept of subset seeds proposed in [1] to similarity search in protein sequences. The main question studied is the design of efficient seed alphabets to construct seeds with optimal sensitivity/selectivity trade-offs. We propose several different design methods and use them to construct several alphabets. We then perform a comparative analysis of seeds built over those alphabets and compare them with the standard BLASTP seeding method [2], [3], as well as with the family of vector seeds proposed in [4]. While the formalism of subset seeds is less expressive (but less costly to implement) than the cumulative principle used in BLASTP and vector seeds, our seeds show a similar or even better performance than BLASTP on Bernoulli models of proteins compatible with the common BLOSUM62 matrix. Finally, we perform a large-scale benchmarking of our seeds against several main databases of protein alignments. Here again, the results show a comparable or better performance of our seeds vs. BLASTP.Comment: IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (2009

The dynamic nature of Cu sites in Cu-SSZ-13 and the origin of the seagull NOx conversion profile during NH₃-SCR

Cu-Zeolites with chabazite structure show a peculiar dual-maxima NO conversion profile, also known as a seagull profile, during the selective catalytic reduction by ammonia. In order to understand the origin of this behavior, systematic catalytic tests and operando spectroscopy were applied to derive structure–performance relationships for Cu-SSZ-13 catalysts with low and high Cu loading. Operando X-ray absorption, X-ray emission and in situ electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy measurements, including novel photon-in/photon-out techniques, demonstrated the interconversion of isolated Cu sites and dimeric bis(μ-oxo) Cu species, the former occurring via formation of ammonia Cu2+/Cu+ complexes and the latter in an oxidizing gas mixture. The formation of dimeric Cu+–O2–Cu+ species by involving Cu sites in close vicinity was linked to the high activity at low temperatures of the highly loaded Cu-SSZ-13 sample. In contrast, the isolated Cu sites present at very low Cu loadings are strongly poisoned by adsorbed NH3. The activity decrease around 350 °C that gives rise to the seagull shaped NO conversion profile could be attributed to a more localized structure of mono(μ-oxo)dicopper complexes. Above this temperature, which corresponds to partial NH3 desorption from Cu sites, the isolated Cu sites migrate to form additional dimeric entities thus recovering the SCR activity

The experience in the use of thermopuncture in complex treatment of pyelonephritis, developed during vesicoureteral reflux and reflux-neuropathy in children with undifferentiated form of connective tissue dysplasia

This article is connected with the definition of expediency and efficiency of use of thermopuncture (TP) in complex treatment of pyelonephritis, developed during vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) and reflux-neuropathy (RN) in children with undifferentiated form of connective tissue dysplasia moderate severity. In the result of conducted researches it was found that patients with acute form of diagnosed pyelonephritis during vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) of 3-4 grade or with reflux-neuropathy, earned during the treatment additional thermopuncture sessions, have more positive dynamics of treatment in comparison with control group, where treatment was conducted only in accordance with the protocol “Diagnosis and treatment of pyelonephritis in children” (Korovina N.A.,2007) with the obligatory use of antibiotics.
