Survey of Federal, National, and International standards applicable to the NASA applications data services
An applications data service (ADS) was developed to meet the challenges in the data access and integration. The ADS provides a common service to locate and access applications data electronically and integrate the cross correlative data sets required by multiple users. Its catalog and network services increase data visibility as well as provide the data in a more rapid manner and a usable form
KM3NeT:a large underwater neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea
High energy neutrinos produced in astrophysical processes will allow for a
new way of studying the universe. In order to detect the expected flux of high
energy neutrinos from specific astrophysical sources, neutrino telescopes of a
scale of a km^3 of water will be needed. A Northern Hemisphere detector is
being proposed to be sited in a deep area of the Mediterranean Sea. This
detector will provide complimentary sky coverage to the IceCube detector being
built at the South Pole. The three neutrino telescope projects in the
Mediterranean (ANTARES, NEMO and NESTOR) are partners in an effort to design,
and build such a km^3 size neutrino telescope, the KM3NeT. The EU is funding a
3-year Design Study; the status of the Design Study is presented and some

Ferromagnetic coupling of mononuclear Fe centers in a self-assembled metal-organic network on Au(111)
The magnetic state and magnetic coupling of individual atoms in nanoscale
structures relies on a delicate balance between different interactions with the
atomic-scale surrounding. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we resolve the
self-assembled formation of highly ordered bilayer structures of Fe atoms and
organic linker molecules (T4PT) when deposited on a Au(111) surface. The Fe
atoms are encaged in a three-dimensional coordination motif by three T4PT
molecules in the surface plane and an additional T4PT unit on top. Within this
crystal field, the Fe atoms retain a magnetic ground state with easy-axis
anisotropy, as evidenced by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray magnetic
circular dichroism. The magnetization curves reveal the existence of
ferromagnetic coupling between the Fe centers
Spin Motion in Electron Transmission through Ultrathin Ferromagnetic Films Accessed by Photoelectron Spectroscopy
Ab initio and model calculations demonstrate that the spin motion of
electrons transmitted through ferromagnetic films can be analyzed in detail by
means of angle- and spin-resolved core-level photoelectron spectroscopy. The
spin motion appears as precession of the photoelectron spin polarization around
and as relaxation towards the magnetization direction. In a systematic study
for ultrathin Fe films on Pd(001) we elucidate its dependence on the Fe film
thickness and on the Fe electronic structure. In addition to elastic and
inelastic scattering, the effect of band gaps on the spin motion is addressed

Accelerating the laser-induced demagnetization of a ferromagnetic film by antiferromagnetic order in an adjacent layer
We study the ultrafast demagnetization of Ni/NiMn and Co/NiMn ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayer systems after excitation by a laser pulse. We probe the ferromagnetic order of Ni and Co using magnetic circular dichroism in time-resolved pump-probe resonant x-ray reflectivity. Tuning the sample temperature across the antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of the NiMn layer allows us to investigate effects induced by the magnetic order of the latter. The presence of antiferromagnetic order in NiMn speeds up the demagnetization of the ferromagnetic layer, which is attributed to bidirectional laser-induced superdiffusive spin currents between the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layer
Simultaneous determination of natural and synthetic steroid estrogens and their conjugates in aqueous matrices by liquid chromatography / mass spectrometry
An analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nine free and conjugated steroid estrogens was developed with application to environmental aqueous matrices. Solid phase extraction (SPE) was employed for isolation and concentration, with detection by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) using electrospray ionisation (ESI) in the negative mode. Method recoveries for various aqueous matrices (wastewater, lake and drinking water) were determined, recoveries proving to be sample dependent. When spiked at 50 ng/l concentrations in sewage influent, recoveries ranged from 62-89 % with relative standard deviations (RSD) < 8.1 %. In comparison, drinking water spiked at the same concentrations had recoveries between 82-100 % with an RSD < 5%. Ion suppression is a known phenomenon when using ESI; hence its impact on method recovery was elucidated for raw sewage. Both ion suppression from matrix interferences and the extraction procedure has bearing on the overall method recovery. Analysis of municipal raw sewage identified several of the analytes of interest at ng/l concentrations, estriol (E3) being the most abundant. Robust isothermal electric switching of interface magnetization: A route to voltage-controlled spintronics
Roughness-insensitive and electrically controllable magnetization at the
(0001) surface of antiferromagnetic chromia is observed using magnetometry and
spin-resolved photoemission measurements and explained by the interplay of
surface termination and magnetic ordering. Further, this surface in placed in
proximity with a ferromagnetic Co/Pd multilayer film. Exchange coupling across
the interface between chromia and Co/Pd induces an electrically controllable
exchange bias in the Co/Pd film, which enables a reversible isothermal (at room
temperature) shift of the global magnetic hysteresis loop of the Co/Pd film
along the magnetic field axis between negative and positive values. These
results reveal the potential of magnetoelectric chromia for spintronic

Serotype 6D of Streptococcus pneumoniae has been reported in Asia and the Fijian islands among nasopharyngeal carriage isolates.
