Mental health support for children and adolescents with hearing loss: scoping review
BackgroundChildren with hearing loss are at increased risk of mental health conditions, including behavioural problems, but there is limited evidence about available mental health support.AimsWe aimed to map the evidence on mental health support for children and adolescents with hearing loss.MethodMedline, Embase, PsycINFO and grey literature databases were searched until April 2021. Articles of any study design were eligible if they described an intervention supporting the mental health of children with hearing loss. No restrictions were placed on geography or publication date. Four reviewers independently screened results by title, abstract and full text. Study characteristics and outcome data were extracted, with results narratively synthesised.ResultsFrom 5629 search results, 27 articles were included. A large majority of the studies (81%, n = 22) were from high-income settings, with two-thirds (67%, n = 18) conducted in the USA. Less than half (41%, n = 11) of the articles adopted experimental research designs, and the majority of studies included small samples. The interventions presented were diverse, with the majority either therapy based (30%, n = 8) or skills training (30%, n = 8). Interventions included ice-skating, parent–child interaction therapy and resilience training. When measured, interventions demonstrated at least some evidence of effectiveness, although this was not always assessed with gold-standard methodology.ConclusionsThe evidence is lacking in breadth, study quality and geographical spread. That said, what is available indicates a range of effective approaches to support the mental health of children with hearing loss. Additional research is needed to improve the breadth of evidence on mental health support for this population.</jats:sec

Cosmological measurements with forthcoming radio continuum surveys
We present forecasts for constraints on cosmological models that can be obtained using the forthcoming radio continuum surveys: the wide surveys with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) for radio astronomy, the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Westerbork Observations of the Deep Apertif Northern Sky (WODAN). We use simulated catalogues that are appropriate to the planned surveys in order to predict measurements obtained with the source autocorrelation, the cross-correlation between radio sources and cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps (the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect), the cross-correlation of radio sources with foreground objects resulting from cosmic magnification, and a joint analysis together with the CMB power spectrum and supernovae (SNe). We show that near-future radio surveys will bring complementary measurements to other experiments, probing different cosmological volumes and having different systematics. Our results show that the unprecedented sky coverage of these surveys combined should provide the most significant measurement yet of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect. In addition, we show that the use of the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect will significantly tighten the constraints on modified gravity parameters, while the best measurements of dark energy models will come from galaxy autocorrelation function analyses. Using a combination of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and WODAN to provide a full-sky survey, it will be possible to measure the dark energy parameters with an uncertainty of {σ(w 0) = 0.05, σ(w a) = 0.12} and the modified gravity parameters {σ(η 0) = 0.10, σ(μ 0) = 0.05}, assuming Planck CMB+SN (current data) priors. Finally, we show that radio surveys would detect a primordial non-Gaussianity of f NL= 8 at 1σ, and we briefly discuss other promising probes
Drug resistance mutations after the first 12 months on antiretroviral therapy and determinants of virological failure in Rwanda
To evaluate HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) and determinants of virological failure in a large cohort of patients receiving first-line tenofovir-based antiretroviral therapy (ART) regimens.; A nationwide retrospective cohort from 42 health facilities was assessed for virological failure and development of HIVDR mutations. Data were collected at ART initiation and at 12 months of ART on patients with available HIV-1 viral load (VL) and ART adherence measurements. HIV resistance genotyping was performed on patients with VL ≥1000 copies/ml. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine factors associated with treatment failure.; Of 828 patients, 66% were women, and the median age was 37 years. Of the 597 patients from whom blood samples were collected, 86.9% were virologically suppressed, while 11.9% were not. Virological failure was strongly associated with age <25 years (adjusted odds ratio [aOR]: 6.4; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.2-12.9), low adherence (aOR: 2.87; 95% CI: 1.5-5.0) and baseline CD4 counts <200 cells/μl (aOR 3.4; 95% CI: 1.9-6.2). Overall, 9.1% of all patients on ART had drug resistance mutations after 1 year of ART; 27% of the patients who failed treatment had no evidence of HIVDR mutations. HIVDR mutations were not observed in patients on the recommended second-line ART regimen in Rwanda.; The last step of the UNAIDS 90-90-90 target appears within grasp, with some viral failures still due to non-adherence. Nonetheless, youth and late initiators are at higher risk of virological failure. Youth-focused programmes could help prevent further drug HIVDR development
