    Let R be a commutative local noetherian ring, and let L and L' be R-modules. We investigate the properties of the functors Tor_i^R(L,-) and Ext^i_R(L,-). For instance, we show the following: (a) if L is artinian and L' is noetherian, then Hom_R(L,L') has finite length; (b) if L and L' are artinian, then the tensor product L \otimes_R L' has finite length; (c) if L and L' are artinian, then Tor_i^R(L,L') is artinian, and Ext^i_R(L,L') is noetherian over the completion \hat R; and (d) if L is artinian and L' is Matlis reflexive, then Ext^i_R(L,L'), Ext^i_R(L',L), and Tor_i^R(L,L') are Matlis reflexive. Also, we study the vanishing behavior of these functors, and we include computations demonstrating the sharpness of our results.Comment: 24 page

    The Nature of the Union: The Evolution of Understandings about Government and Society Under the Early Continental Congresses, 1774-1776

    Understandings of the Founding Era have been under continuous debate since the American Revolution itself. Whether one examines the Articles of Confederation or the Continental Congresses, the successes, failures, and significance of each have been argued over since the beginning. By looking at American understandings of crucial ideas about government and society during the American Revolution, including the foundation of American rights, we can better come to terms with an understanding of American identity. These understandings evolved during the American Revolution, and their evolution can be examined through the resolutions, debates, correspondence, and diaries of members of Congress from the the First Continental Congress in 1774 to the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in July of 1776. The Declaration represented the synthesis of natural law thought with British constitutionalism that was forged out of the necessity of compromise during the lead up to war in 1774, the outbreak of hostilities in 1775, and the subsequent escalation into war shortly thereafter, exhibiting the importance of wartime exigencies in the evolution of American thought

    Emergence of the Shackleton Range from beneath the Antarctic Ice Sheet due to glacial erosion

    This paper explores the long-term evolution of a subglacial fjord landscape in the Shackleton Range, Antarctica. We propose that prolonged ice-sheet erosion across a passive continental margin caused troughs to deepen and lower the surrounding ice-sheet surface, leaving adjacent mountains exposed. Geomorphological evidence suggests a change in the direction of regional ice flow accompanied emergence. Simple calculations suggest that isostatic compensation caused by the deepening of bounding ice-stream troughs lowered the ice-sheet surface relative to the mountains by ~800m. Use of multiple cosmogenic isotopes on bedrock and erratics (26Al, 10Be, 21Ne) provides evidence that overriding of the massif and the deepening of the adjacent troughs occurred earlier than the Quaternary. Perhaps this occurred in the mid-Miocene, as elsewhere in East Antarctica in the McMurdo Dry Valleys and the Lambert basin. The implication is that glacial erosion instigates feedback that can change ice-sheet thickness, extent, and direction of flow. Indeed, as the subglacial troughs evolve over millions of years, they increase topographic relief; and this changes the dynamics of the ice sheet. © 2013 Elsevier B.V

    10Be in Ice Cores and 14C in Tree Rings: Separation of Production and Climate Effects

    Cosmogenic radionuclides are more and more used in solar activity reconstructions. However, the cosmogenic radionuclide signal also contains a climate component. It is therefore crucial to eliminate the climate information to allow a better interpretation of the reconstructed solar activity indices. In this paper the method of principal components is applied to 10Be data from two ice cores from opposite hemispheres as well as to 14C data from tree rings. The analysis shows that these records are dominated by a common signal which explains about 80% of the variance on multi decadal to multi millennial time scales, reflecting their common production rate. The second and third components are significantly different for 14C and 10Be. They are interpreted as system effects introduced by the transport of 10Be and 14C from the atmosphere where they are produced to the respective natural archives where they are stored. Principal component analysis improves significantly extraction of the production signal from the cosmogenic isotope data series, which is more appropriate for astrophysical and terrestrial studie

    LCDG4 and DigiSim - Simulation activities at NICADD/NIU

    We present two software packages developed to support detector R&D studies for the International Linear Collider. LCDG4 is a full-detector simulator that provides energy deposits from particles traversing the sensitive volumes of the detector. It has been extensively used within the American ILC community, providing data for algorithm development and detector optimization studies. DigiSim models real-life digitization effects, converting the idealized response into simulated detector readout. It has many useful features to improve the realism in modeling detector response.
