Thermal analysis comparison between two random glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic matrix composites bonded by adhesives using microwaves: preliminary results
[Abstract]: This paper compares the thermal analysis of two types of random glass fibre reinforced thermoplastic matrix composites joined by adhesives using microwave energy. Fixed frequency, 2.45 GHz, microwave facility is used to join thirty three percent by weight random glass fibre reinforced polystyrene composite [PS/GF (33%)] and thirty three percent by weight random glass fibre reinforced low density polyethylene composite [LDPE/GF (33%)]. The facility used is shown in Figure 1. With a given power level, the composites were exposed to various exposure times to microwave irradiation. The primer or coupling agent used was 5-minute two-part adhesive. The heat distribution of the samples of the two types of composites was analysed and compared. The relationship between the heat distribution and the lap shear strength of the samples was also compared and discussed
Riemann-Hilbert problems for monogenic functions in axially symmetric domains
We consider Riemann-Hilbert boundary value problems (for short RHBVPs) with variable coefficients for axially symmetric monogenic functions defined in axial symmetric domains. This is done by constructing a method to reduce the RHBVPs for axially symmetric monogenic functions defined in four-dimensional axial symmetric domains into the RHBVPs for analytic functions defined over the complex plane. Then we derive solutions to the corresponding Schwarz problem. Finally, we generalize the results obtained to null-solutions of (D−α)ϕ=0, α∈R, where R denotes the field of real numbers
Pulsed THz radiation due to phonon-polariton effect in [110] ZnTe crystal
Pulsed terahertz (THz) radiation, generated through optical rectification
(OR) by exciting [110] ZnTe crystal with ultrafast optical pulses, typically
consists of only a few cycles of electromagnetic field oscillations with a
duration about a couple of picoseconds. However, it is possible, under
appropriate conditions, to generate a long damped oscillation tail (LDOT)
following the main cycles. The LDOT can last tens of picoseconds and its
Fourier transform shows a higher and narrower frequency peak than that of the
main pulse. We have demonstrated that the generation of the LDOT depends on
both the duration of the optical pulse and its central wavelength. Furthermore,
we have also performed theoretical calculations based upon the OR effect
coupled with the phonon-polariton mode of ZnTe and obtained theoretical THz
waveforms in good agreement with our experimental observation.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
The client-binding domain of the cochaperone Sgt2 has a helical-hand structure that binds a short hydrophobic helix
The targeting and insertion of tail-anchored (TA) integral membrane proteins (IMP) into the correct membrane is critical for cellular homeostasis. The fungal protein Sgt2, and its human homolog SGTA, binds hydrophobic clients and is the entry point for targeting of ER-bound TA IMPs. Here we reveal molecular details that underlie the mechanism of Sgt2 binding to TA IMP clients. We establish that the Sgt2 C-terminal region is flexible but conserved and sufficient for client binding. A molecular model for this domain reveals a helical hand forming a hydrophobic groove, consistent with a higher affinity for TA IMP clients with hydrophobic faces and a minimal length of 11 residues. This work places Sgt2 into a broader family of TPR-containing co-chaperone proteins
Constitutive cytoplasmic localization of p21Waf1/Cip1 affects the apoptotic process in monocytic leukaemia
In the present study, we analysed the expression and localization of p21Waf1/Cip1 in normal and malignant haematopoietic cells. We demonstrate that in normal monocytic cells, protein kinase C (PKC)-induced p21 gene activation, which is nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) independent, results in predominantly cytoplasmic localized p21 protein. In acute monocytic leukaemia (M4, M5), monocytic blasts (N=12) show constitutive cytoplasmic p21 expression in 75% of the cases, while in myeloid leukaemic blasts (N=10), low nuclear and cytoplasmic localization of p21 could be detected, which is also PKC dependent. Constitutive p21 expression in monocytic leukaemia might have important antiapoptotic functions. This is supported by the finding that in U937 cells overexpressing p21, VP16-induced apoptosis is significantly reduced (20.0±0.9 vs 55.8±3.8%, P<0.01, N=5), reflected by a reduced phosphorylation of p38 and JNK. Similarly, AML blasts with high cytoplasmic p21 were less sensitive to VP16-induced apoptosis as compared to AML cases with low or undetectable p21 expression (42.25 vs 12.3%, P<0.01). Moreover, complex formation between p21 and ASK1 could be demonstrated in AML cells, by means of coimmunoprecipitation. In summary, these results indicate that p21 has an antiapoptotic role in monocytic leukaemia, and that p21 expression is regulated in a PKC-dependent and NF-κB independent manner.
Rabi oscillations of a qubit coupled to a two-level system
The problem of Rabi oscillations in a qubit coupled to a fluctuator and in
contact with a heath bath is considered. A scheme is developed for taking into
account both phase and energy relaxation in a phenomenological way, while
taking full account of the quantum dynamics of the four-level system subject to
a driving AC field. Significant suppression of the Rabi oscillations is found
when the qubit and fluctuator are close to resonance. The effect of the
fluctuator state on the read-out signal is discussed. This effect is shown to
modify the observed signal significantly. This may be relevant to recent
experiments by Simmonds et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 077003 (2004)].Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Experimental observation of the crystallization of a paired holon state
A new excitation is observed at 201 meV in the doped-hole ladder cuprate
SrCuO, using ultraviolet resonance Raman scattering with
incident light at 3.7 eV polarized along the direction of the rungs. The
excitation is found to be of charge nature, with a temperature independent
excitation energy, and can be understood via an intra-ladder pair-breaking
process. The intensity tracks closely the order parameter of the charge density
wave in the ladder (CDW), but persists above the CDW transition
temperature (), indicating a strong local pairing above .
The 201 meV excitation vanishes in LaCaCuO,
and LaCaCuO which are samples with no holes in the
ladders. Our results suggest that the doped holes in the ladder are composite
bosons consisting of paired holons that order below .Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters (4 figures
