Self-Organized Criticality and Thermodynamic formalism
We introduce a dissipative version of the Zhang's model of Self-Organized
Criticality, where a parameter allows to tune the local energy dissipation. We
analyze the main dynamical features of the model and relate in particular the
Lyapunov spectrum with the transport properties in the stationary regime. We
develop a thermodynamic formalism where we define formal Gibbs measure,
partition function and pressure characterizing the avalanche distributions. We
discuss the infinite size limit in this setting. We show in particular that a
Lee-Yang phenomenon occurs in this model, for the only conservative case. This

Natural Enemies of Alfalfa Weevil, \u3ci\u3eHypera Postica\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), in Minnesota
Alfalfa weevil, Hypera postica, is present throughout Minnesota. How- ever, economically damaging populations seldom occur, due to a combination of natural enemies and adverse climatic conditions. Five natural enemies of alfalfa weevil were found in Minnesota. Microctonus aethiopoides (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), a parasitoid of adults, was recovered from 43 of 65 counties surveyed during 1984 and 1985. Tetrastichus incertus (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) and Bathyplectes curculionis (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), parasitoids of larvae, were each recovered from 13 of 15 counties surveyed during 1991-1993. Bathyplectes anurus, another parasitoid of larvae, was recovered from one county In 1991, four counties in 1992, and six counties in 1993. Zoophthora phytonomi (Entomophthora: Entomophthoraceae), a pathogen of larvae, was recovered from 14 of 15 counties surveyed in 1991-1993. Winters with low minimum temperatures and little snow cover were detrimental to the weevil. Usually, southeastern Minnesota has milder winters and higher alfalfa weevil populations than other areas of the State. However, even here, because of natural enemies, weevil populations seldom reach economically damaging levels
Experimental observation of the 'Tilting Mode' of an array of vortices in a dilute Bose-Einstein Condensate
We have measured the precession frequency of a vortex lattice in a
Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms. The observed mode corresponds to a
collective motion in which all the vortices in the array are tilted by a small
angle with respect to the z-axis (the symmetry axis of the trapping potential)
and synchronously rotate about this axis. This motion corresponds to excitation
of a Kelvin wave along the core of each vortex and we have verified that it has
the handedness expected for such helical waves, i.e. precession in the opposite
sense to the rotational flow around the vortices. The experimental method used
to excite this collective mode closely resembles that used to study the
scissors mode and excitation of the scissors mode for a condensate containing a
vortex array was used to determine the angular momentum of the system. Indeed,
the collective tilting of the array that we have observed has previously been

Implementation issues in product line scoping
Often product line engineering is treated similar to the waterfall model in traditional software engineering, i.e., the different phases (scoping, analysis, architecting, implementation) are treated as if they could be clearly separated and would follow each other in an ordered fashion. However, in practice strong interactions between the individual phases become apparent. In particular, how implementation is done has a strong impact on economic aspects of the project and thus how to adequately plan it. Hence, assessing these relationships adequately in the beginning has a strong impact on performing a product line project right. In this paper we present a framework that helps in exactly this task. It captures on an abstract level the relationships between scoping information and implementation aspects and thus allows to provide rough guidance on implementation aspects of the project. We will also discuss the application of our framework to a specific industrial project
Anterior Dental Microwear Texture Analysis of the Krapina Neandertals
Some Neandertal anterior teeth show unusual and excessive gross wear, commonly explained by non-dietary anterior tooth use, or using the anterior dentition as a tool, clamp, or third hand. This alternate use is inferred from aboriginal arctic populations, who used their front teeth in this manner. Here we examine anterior dental microwear textures of the Krapina Neandertals to test this hypothesis and further analyze tooth use in these hominins.
Microwear textures from 17 Krapina Dental People were collected by white-light confocal profilometry using a 100x objective lens. Four adjacent scans were generated, totaling an area of 204x276 μm, and were analyzed using Toothfrax and SFrax SSFA software packages. The Neandertals were compared to six bioarchaeological/ethnographic samples with reported variation in diet, abrasive load, and non-dietary anterior tooth use.
Results indicate that Krapina anterior teeth lack extreme microwear textures expected of hominins exposed to heavy abrasives or those that regularly generated high stresses associated with intense use of the front teeth as tools. Krapina hominins have microwear attributes in common with Coast Tsimshian, Aleut, and Puye Pueblo samples. Collectively, this suggests that the Krapina Neandertals faced moderate abrasive loads and only periodically used their anterior teeth as tools for non-diet related behaviors
