The impact of news on measures of undiversifiable risk: evidence from the UK stock market
Using UK equity index data, this paper considers the impact of news
on time varying measures of beta, the usual measure of undiversifiable risk.
The empirical model implies that beta depends on news about the market and
news about the sector. The asymmetric response of beta to news about the
market is consistent across all sectors considered. Recent research is divided as
to whether abnormalities in equity returns arise from changes in expected
returns in an efficient market or over-reactions to new information. The
evidence suggests that such abnormalities may be due to changes in expected
returns caused by time-variation and asymmetry in beta
Regge Calculus in Teleparallel Gravity
In the context of the teleparallel equivalent of general relativity, the
Weitzenbock manifold is considered as the limit of a suitable sequence of
discrete lattices composed of an increasing number of smaller an smaller
simplices, where the interior of each simplex (Delaunay lattice) is assumed to
be flat. The link lengths between any pair of vertices serve as independent
variables, so that torsion turns out to be localized in the two dimensional
hypersurfaces (dislocation triangle, or hinge) of the lattice. Assuming that a
vector undergoes a dislocation in relation to its initial position as it is
parallel transported along the perimeter of the dual lattice (Voronoi polygon),
we obtain the discrete analogue of the teleparallel action, as well as the

Absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy on a single self-assembled charge-tunable quantum dot
We have performed detailed photoluminescence (PL) and absorption spectroscopy
on the same single self-assembled quantum dot in a charge-tunable device. The
transition from neutral to charged exciton in the PL occurs at a more negative
voltage than the corresponding transition in absorption. We have developed a
model of the Coulomb blockade to account for this observation. At large
negative bias, the absorption broadens as a result of electron and hole
tunneling. We observe resonant features in this regime whenever the quantum dot
hole level is resonant with two-dimensional hole states located at the capping
layer-blocking barrier interface in our structure.Comment: 6 pages, 6 figure
Very large tunneling magnetoresistance in layered magnetic semiconductor CrI3
Magnetic layered van der Waals crystals are an emerging class of materials giving access to new physical phenomena, as illustrated by the recent observation of 2D ferromagnetism in Cr2Ge2Te6 and CrI3. Of particular interest in semiconductors is the interplay between magnetism and transport, which has remained unexplored. Here we report magneto-transport measurements on exfoliated CrI3 crystals. We find that tunneling conduction in the direction perpendicular to the crystalline planes exhibits a magnetoresistance as large as 10,000%. The evolution of the magnetoresistance with magnetic field and temperature reveals that the phenomenon originates from multiple transitions to different magnetic states, whose possible microscopic nature is discussed on the basis of all existing experimental observations. This observed dependence of the conductance of a tunnel barrier on its magnetic state is a phenomenon that demonstrates the presence of a strong coupling between transport and magnetism in magnetic van der Waals semiconductors
Demagnetization of Quantum Dot Nuclear Spins: Breakdown of the Nuclear Spin Temperature Approach
The physics of interacting nuclear spins arranged in a crystalline lattice is
typically described using a thermodynamic framework: a variety of experimental
studies in bulk solid-state systems have proven the concept of a spin
temperature to be not only correct but also vital for the understanding of
experimental observations. Using demagnetization experiments we demonstrate
that the mesoscopic nuclear spin ensemble of a quantum dot (QD) can in general
not be described by a spin temperature. We associate the observed deviations
from a thermal spin state with the presence of strong quadrupolar interactions
within the QD that cause significant anharmonicity in the spectrum of the
nuclear spins. Strain-induced, inhomogeneous quadrupolar shifts also lead to a
complete suppression of angular momentum exchange between the nuclear spin
ensemble and its environment, resulting in nuclear spin relaxation times
exceeding an hour. Remarkably, the position dependent axes of quadrupolar
interactions render magnetic field sweeps inherently non-adiabatic, thereby
causing an irreversible loss of nuclear spin polarization.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
U–Pb Zircon geochronology of the Cambro-Ordovician metagranites and metavolcanic rocks of central and NW Iberia
New U–Pb zircon data from metagranites and metavolcanic rocks of the Schist-Graywacke Complex Domain and the Schistose Domain of Galicia Tras-os-Montes Zone from central and NW Iberia contribute to constrain the timing of the Cambro-Ordovician magmatism from Central Iberian and Galicia Tras-os-Montes Zones which occurred between 498 and 462 Ma. The crystallization ages of the metagranites and metavolcanic rocks from the northern Schist-Graywacke Complex Domain are as follows: (a) in west Salamanca, 489 ± 5 Ma for Vitigudino, 486 ± 6 Ma for Fermoselle and 471 ± 7 Ma for Ledesma; (b) in northern Gredos, 498 ± 4 Ma for Castellanos, 492 ± 4 Ma for San Pelayo and 488 ± 3 Ma for Bercimuelle; (c) in Guadarrama, 490 ± 5 Ma for La Estacion I, 489 ± 9 Ma for La Canada, 484 ± 6 Ma for Vegas de Matute (leucocratic), 483 ± 6 Ma for El Cardoso, 482 ± 8 Ma for La Morcuera, 481 ± 9 Ma for Buitrago de Lozoya, 478 ± 7 Ma for La Hoya, 476 ± 5 Ma for Vegas de Matute (melanocratic), 475 ± 5 Ma for Riaza, 473 ± 8 Ma for La Estacion II and 462 ± 11 Ma for La Berzosa; and (d) in Toledo, 489 ± 7 Ma for Mohares and 480 ± 8 Ma for Polan. The crystallization ages of the metagranites from the Schistose Domain of Galicia Tras-os-Montes Zone are 497 ± 6 Ma for Laxe, 486 ± 8 Ma for San Mamede, 482 ± 7 Ma for Bangueses, 481 ± 5 Ma for Noia, 480 ± 10 for Rial de Sabucedo, 476 ± 9 Ma for Vilanova, 475 ± 6 Ma for Pontevedra, 470 ± 6 Ma for Cherpa and 462 ± 8 Ma for Bande.This magmatism is characterized by an average isotopic composition of (87Sr/86Sr)485Ma ≈ 0.712, (eNd)485Ma ≈ -4.1 and (TDM) ≈ 1.62 Ga, and a high zircon inheritance, composed of Ediacaran–Early Cambrian (65 %) and, to a lesser extent, Cryogenian, Tonian, Mesoproterozoic, Orosirian and Archean pre-magmatic cores. Combining our geochronological and isotopic data with others of similar rocks from the European Variscan Belt, it may be deduced that Cambro-Ordovician magmas from this belt were mainly generated by partial melting of Ediacaran–Early Cambrian igneous rocks
