    The Power of Non-Determinism in Higher-Order Implicit Complexity

    We investigate the power of non-determinism in purely functional programming languages with higher-order types. Specifically, we consider cons-free programs of varying data orders, equipped with explicit non-deterministic choice. Cons-freeness roughly means that data constructors cannot occur in function bodies and all manipulation of storage space thus has to happen indirectly using the call stack. While cons-free programs have previously been used by several authors to characterise complexity classes, the work on non-deterministic programs has almost exclusively considered programs of data order 0. Previous work has shown that adding explicit non-determinism to cons-free programs taking data of order 0 does not increase expressivity; we prove that this - dramatically - is not the case for higher data orders: adding non-determinism to programs with data order at least 1 allows for a characterisation of the entire class of elementary-time decidable sets. Finally we show how, even with non-deterministic choice, the original hierarchy of characterisations is restored by imposing different restrictions.Comment: pre-edition version of a paper accepted for publication at ESOP'1

    On the use of blow up to study regularizations of singularities of piecewise smooth dynamical systems in R3\mathbb{R}^3

    In this paper we use the blow up method of Dumortier and Roussarie \cite{dumortier_1991,dumortier_1993,dumortier_1996}, in the formulation due to Krupa and Szmolyan \cite{krupa_extending_2001}, to study the regularization of singularities of piecewise smooth dynamical systems \cite{filippov1988differential} in R3\mathbb R^3. Using the regularization method of Sotomayor and Teixeira \cite{Sotomayor96}, first we demonstrate the power of our approach by considering the case of a fold line. We quickly recover a main result of Bonet and Seara \cite{reves_regularization_2014} in a simple manner. Then, for the two-fold singularity, we show that the regularized system only fully retains the features of the singular canards in the piecewise smooth system in the cases when the sliding region does not include a full sector of singular canards. In particular, we show that every locally unique primary singular canard persists the regularizing perturbation. For the case of a sector of primary singular canards, we show that the regularized system contains a canard, provided a certain non-resonance condition holds.     Optical Diagnostics on Helical Flux Compression Generators

    Explosively driven magnetic flux compression (MFC) has been object of research for more than three decades. Actual interest in the basic physical picture of flux compression has been heightened by a newly started Department of Defense (DoD) Multi-University Research Initiative. The emphasis is on helical flux compression generators comprising a hollow cylindrical metal liner filled with high explosives and at least one helical coil surrounding the liner. After the application of a seed current, magnetic flux is trapped and high current is generated by moving, i.e., expanding, the liner explosively along the winding of the helical coil. Several key factors involved in the temporal development can be addresses by optical diagnostics. 1) The uniformity of liner expansion is captured by framing camera photography and supplemented by laser illuminated high spatial and temporal resolution imaging. Also, X-ray flash photography is insensitive to possible image blur by shockwaves coming from the exploding liner. 2) The thermodynamic state of the shocked gas is assessed by spatially and temporally resolved emission spectroscopy. 3) The moving liner-coil contact point is a possible source of high electric losses and is preferentially monitored also by emission spectroscopy. Since optical access to the region between liner and coil is not always guaranteed, optical fibers can he used to extract light from the generator. The information so gained will give, together with detailed electrical diagnostics, more insight in the physical loss mechanisms involved in MFC

    International audienceThis study is focused on a phenomenon often encountered in flow carrying pipes, since flow instabilities caused by geometric features may generate acoustic signals and thereafter interact with these signals in such a way that powerful pure tones are produced. A modern example is found in the so-called " singing risers " , or the gas pipes connecting gas production platforms to the transport network. But the flow generated resonance in a fully corrugated circular pipe may be silenced by the addition of relatively low frequency flow oscillations induced by an acoustic generator.     Cosmological implications of the KATRIN experiment

    The upcoming Karlsruhe Tritium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment will put unprecedented constraints on the absolute mass of the electron neutrino, \mnue. In this paper we investigate how this information on \mnue will affect our constraints on cosmological parameters. We consider two scenarios; one where \mnue=0 (i.e., no detection by KATRIN), and one where \mnue=0.3eV. We find that the constraints on \mnue from KATRIN will affect estimates of some important cosmological parameters significantly. For example, the significance of ns<1n_s<1 and the inferred value of ΩΛ\Omega_\Lambda depend on the results from the KATRIN experiment.Comment: 13 page

    The regularized visible fold revisited

    The planar visible fold is a simple singularity in piecewise smooth systems. In this paper, we consider singularly perturbed systems that limit to this piecewise smooth bifurcation as the singular perturbation parameter ϵ→0\epsilon\rightarrow 0. Alternatively, these singularly perturbed systems can be thought of as regularizations of their piecewise counterparts. The main contribution of the paper is to demonstrate the use of consecutive blowup transformations in this setting, allowing us to obtain detailed information about a transition map near the fold under very general assumptions. We apply this information to prove, for the first time, the existence of a locally unique saddle-node bifurcation in the case where a limit cycle, in the singular limit ϵ→0\epsilon\rightarrow 0, grazes the discontinuity set. We apply this result to a mass-spring system on a moving belt described by a Stribeck-type friction law

    Urban gardens in Antiquity : the case of Gerasa/Jerash in Jordan

Financial support for the OSL analyses was provided by the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment and Society (SAGES).In the Eastern Mediterranean, where some of the earliest known urban cities are located, relatively little is known about urban soils in archaeological contexts. Red Mediterranean Soil (RMS) is a hallmark of the Mediterranean region while the impact of long-term urbanization on RMS material is understudied. In this article we present evidence of RMS from the longue durée cityscape of Jerash, Jordan, to determine how humans have used, modified and impacted RMS material in an urban context. Thin-sections were made of twelve RMS samples, and micromorphological studies on several in-situ but disturbed soils adjacent to bedrock were conducted, spanning the initial surface soil disturbances in the Hellenistic and Roman period occupation, as well as transported RMS material spanning the Roman through Umayyad periods (until the earthquake of 749 CE). We compared the on-site inner-urban red soils to natural RMS in the area and found that some characteristics reflect their origin in the Pleistocene soils, while other traits reflect human impact related to urban activities. The majority of the on-site samples contained evidence comparable to modern centers, including changes of structure, texture, inclusions, as well as high levels of contamination of heavy metals and phosphorus (P), which combined are strong signs of urban activity. Evidence including textural pedofeatures, fragmented peds, mixed fabrics, sorting of silt-sized material likely reflect the use of RMS in urban gardens and cultivation. Black carbon inclusions within the fabric contain evidence for burning of organic matter in connection with various anthropogenic activities, likely re-dispersed via aeolian and water erosion processes. Heavy metal enrichments, which are associated with production and artisanal activities, may also have been disseminated by both aeolian and surface water processes, possibly in conjunction with irrigation undertaken with polluted water. Contrasting soil fabrics and inclusion features observed in thin section together with elemental analayses characterizes the nature of urban cultivation in its environmental context at Jerash, where city life was maintained for over 800 years. With cultivated soils in urban areas increasingly evidenced in archaeological stratigraphies from different regions of the world, our approach offers new insight into the vital contributions that these soils and their management has made to the food security, resilience and longevity of early city life.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Five Planets Transiting a Ninth Magnitude Star

    The Kepler mission has revealed a great diversity of planetary systems and architectures, but most of the planets discovered by Kepler orbit faint stars. Using new data from the K2 mission, we present the discovery of a five planet system transiting a bright (V = 8.9, K = 7.7) star called HIP 41378. HIP 41378 is a slightly metal-poor late F-type star with moderate rotation (v sin(i) = 7 km/s) and lies at a distance of 116 +/- 18 from Earth. We find that HIP 41378 hosts two sub-Neptune sized planets orbiting 3.5% outside a 2:1 period commensurability in 15.6 and 31.7 day orbits. In addition, we detect three planets which each transit once during the 75 days spanned by K2 observations. One planet is Neptune sized in a likely ~160 day orbit, one is sub-Saturn sized likely in a ~130 day orbit, and one is a Jupiter sized planet in a likely ~1 year orbit. We show that these estimates for the orbital periods can be made more precise by taking into account dynamical stability considerations. We also calculate the distribution of stellar reflex velocities expected for this system, and show that it provides a good target for future radial velocity observations. If a precise orbital period can be determined for the outer Jovian planet through future observations, it will be an excellent candidate for follow-up transit observations to study its atmosphere and measure its oblateness.Comment: Accepted by ApJL. 12 pages, 6 figures, 2 table
