Analysis and design of a flat central finned-tube radiator

Computer program based on fixed conductance parameter yields minimum weight design. Second program employs variable conductance parameter and variable ratio of fin length to tube outside radius, and is used for radiator designs with geometric limitations. Major outputs of the two programs are given

    Phase Transition in a Three-States Reaction-Diffusion System

A one-dimensional reaction-diffusion model consisting of two species of particles and vacancies on a ring is introduced. The number of particles in one species is conserved while in the other species it can fluctuate because of creation and annihilation of particles. It has been shown that the model undergoes a continuous phase transition from a phase where the currents of different species of particles are equal to another phase in which they are different. The total density of particles and also their currents in each phase are calculated exactly.Comment: 6 page

Universality properties of the stationary states in the one-dimensional coagulation-diffusion model with external particle input

We investigate with the help of analytical and numerical methods the reaction A+A->A on a one-dimensional lattice opened at one end and with an input of particles at the other end. We show that if the diffusion rates to the left and to the right are equal, for large x, the particle concentration c(x) behaves like As/x (x measures the distance to the input end). If the diffusion rate in the direction pointing away from the source is larger than the one corresponding to the opposite direction the particle concentration behaves like Aa/sqrt(x). The constants As and Aa are independent of the input and the two coagulation rates. The universality of Aa comes as a surprise since in the asymmetric case the system has a massive spectrum.Comment: 27 pages, LaTeX, including three postscript figures, to appear in J. Stat. Phy

City Council Legislative Committees and Policy-making in Large United States Cities

    Get PDF
Theory: Legislative committees are extensive and integral to the structure and policy-making functions of Congress and state legislatures. Scant research exists on current roles of committees of city councils. Hypotheses: We hypothesize that city council committee systems are less common and not as vital to policy-making than is true of other legislative bodies. Contrary to much urban research, we further expect that city government structure, not the political environment, shapes development of committee systems and their policy roles. Methods: Logistic and OLS regression are the methods used to analyze the structure of city council committee systems. Differences in policy outputs are analyzed with t-tests and OLS regression. Data are from a 1992-93 mail survey of 160 large United States cities, and from Census Bureau reports on city government finances. Results: Committees are widely used in large cities and their use is directly due to structural aspects of city government, particularly size of city council. Broad policy-making roles are found to be uncommon, but a substantial part of city legislative business is assigned to committees. Legislative committees have a small impact on policy outputs

Reconciling threshold and subthreshold expansions for pion-nucleon scattering

    Get PDF
Heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory (ChPT) at one loop fails in relating the pion-nucleon amplitude in the physical region and for subthreshold kinematics due to loop effects enhanced by large low-energy constants. Studying the chiral convergence of threshold and subthreshold parameters up to fourth order in the small-scale expansion, we address the question to what extent this tension can be mitigated by including the Δ(1232)\Delta(1232) as an explicit degree of freedom and/or using a covariant formulation of baryon ChPT. We find that the inclusion of the Δ\Delta indeed reduces the low-energy constants to more natural values and thereby improves consistency between threshold and subthreshold kinematics. In addition, even in the Δ\Delta-less theory the resummation of 1/mN1/m_N corrections in the covariant scheme improves the results markedly over the heavy-baryon formulation, in line with previous observations in the single-baryon sector of ChPT that so far have evaded a profound theoretical explanation.Comment: 10 pages, 4 tables, Mathematica notebook with the analytic expressions for threshold and subthreshold parameters included as supplementary material; journal versio
