    Extending the CRESST-II commissioning run limits to lower masses

    Motivated by the recent interest in light WIMPs of mass ~O(10 GeV), an extension of the elastic, spin-independent WIMP-nucleon cross-section limits resulting from the CRESST-II commissioning run (2007) are presented. Previously, these data were used to set cross-section limits from 1000 GeV down to ~17 GeV, using tungsten recoils, in 47.9 kg-days of exposure of calcium tungstate. Here, the overlap of the oxygen and calcium bands with the acceptance region of the commissioning run data set is reconstructed using previously published quenching factors. The resulting elastic WIMP cross section limits, accounting for the additional exposure of oxygen and calcium, are presented down to 5 GeV.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

Annual pregnancy rates in women using pericoital levonor- gestrel 150 mcg to 1 mg range from 4.9% to 8.9%; menstrual irregularity is the most common adverse effect (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, Cochrane review of lower-quality trials). In women younger than 35 years who have sexual intercourse 6 or fewer times per month, correct and consistent use of pericoital levonorgestrel 1.5 mg results in an annual pregnancy rate of 11% (SOR:B,one large prospective, open-label trial). Evidence-based answer: Short-term (<4 months) treatment with opioids provides modest relief of chronic low back pain, but only minimal improvement in function compared with placebo (strength of recommendation [SOR]: B, systematic review of lower-quality randomized controlled trials [RCTs]). Tramadol isn't superior to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain relief (SOR: A, consistent results from RCTs). In addition, oxycodone with titrated morphine isn't better than naproxen for relieving pain or improving function (SOR: C, a low-quality RCT). Although no long-term RCTs have been done, cohort studies have shown that 6 to 12 months of opioid use is associated with a small decrease in pain and either very minimal improvement in, or worsening of, disability (SOR: B, prospective cohort trials)

    Q: What is the optimal frequency for dental checkups for children and adults? A: It is unclear, but studies suggest that it should be based largely on individual risk. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a 6-month interval for preventive dental visits (strength of recommendation [SOR]: C, expert opinion), but a 24-month interval does not result in an increased incidence of dental caries in healthy children and young adults or increased incidence of gingivitis in healthy adults (SOR: B, a single randomized controlled trial [RCT]). In adults with risk factors (eg, smoking or diabetes), visits at 6-month intervals are associated with a lower incidence of tooth loss (SOR: C, a retrospective cohort study).     Phylum-wide transcriptome analysis of oogenesis and early embryogenesis in selected nematode species

    Oogenesis is a prerequisite for embryogenesis in Metazoa. During both biological processes important decisions must be made to form the embryo and hence ensure the next generation: (1) Maternal gene products (mRNAs, proteins and nutrients) must be supplied to the embryo. (2) Polarity must be established and axes must be specified. While incorporation of maternal gene products occurs during oogenesis, the time point of polarity establishment and axis specification varies among species, as it is accomplished either prior, during, or after fertilisation. But not only the time point when these events take place varies among species but also the underlying mechanisms by which they are triggered. For the nematode model Caenorhabditis elegans the underlying pathways and gene regulatory networks (GRNs) are well understood. It is known that there the sperm entry point initiates a primary polarity in the 1-celled egg and with it the establishment of the anteroposterior axis. However, studies of other nematodes demonstrated that polarity establishment can be independent of sperm entry (Goldstein et al., 1998; Lahl et al., 2006) and that cleavage patterns, symmetry formation and cell specification also differ from C. elegans. In contrast to the studied Chromadorea (more derived nematodes including C. elegans), embryos of some marine Enoplea (more basal representatives) even show no discernible early polarity and blastomeres can adopt variable cell fates (Voronov and Panchin 1998). The underlying pathways controlling the obviously variant embryonic processes in non-Caenorhabditis nematodes are essentially unknown. In this thesis I addressed this issue by performing a detailed unbiased comparative transcriptome analysis based on microarrays and RNA sequencing of selected developmental stages in a variety of nematodes from different phylogenetic branches with C. elegans as a reference system and a nematomorph as an outgroup representative. In addition, I made use of available genomic data to determine the presence or absence of genes for which no expression had been detected. In particular, I focussed on components of selected pathways or GRNs which are known to play essential roles during C. elegans development and/or other invertebrate or vertebrate model systems. Oogenesis must be regulated differently in non-Caenorhabditis nematodes, as crucial controlling components of Wnt and sex determination signaling are absent in these species. In this respect, I identified female-specific expression of potential polarity associated genes during gonad development and oogenesis in the Enoplean nematode Romanomermis culicivorax. I could show that known downstream components of the polarity complexes PAR-3/-6/PKC-3 and PAR-1/-2 are absent in non-Caenorhabditis species. Even PAR-2 as part of the polarity complex does not exist in these nematodes. Instead, transcriptomes of nematodes (including C. elegans), show expression of other polarity-associated complexes such as the Lgl (Lethal giant larvae) complex. This result could pose an alternative route for nematodes and nematomorphs to initiate polarity during early embryogenesis. I could show that crucial pathways of axis specification, such as Wnt and BMP are very different in C. elegans compared to other nematodes. In the former, Wnt signaling, for instance, is mediated by four paralogous beta-catenins, while other Chromadorea have fewer and Enoplea only one beta-catenin. The transcriptomes of R. culicivorax and the nematomorph show that regulators of BMP (e.g. Chordin), are specifically expressed during early embryogenesis only in Enoplea and the close outgroup of nematomorphs. In conclusion, my results demonstrate that the molecular machinery controlling oogenesis and embryogenesis in nematodes is unexpectedly variable and C. elegans cannot be taken as a general model for nematode development. Under this perspective, Enoplean nematodes show more similarities with outgroups than with C. elegans. It appears that certain pathway components were lost or gained during evolution and others adopted new functions. Based on my findings I can conjecture, which pathway components may be ancestral and which were newly acquired in the course of nematode evolution

    Examining the Interaction between Financial Gambling Motives and Socioeconomic Status in Predicting Gambling in a U.S. Nationally Representative Sample

    Presentation Abstract: There is still much unknown about the socioeconomic (SES) roots of Problem Gambling (PG), especially given recent evidence that SES should be understood both in objective and subjective terms. Further, the motivation to gambler for financial gain has been identified as a key factor in the transition from recreational gambling to problem gambling. A such, there is a need for research seeking to understand how SES and perceived financial deprivation influence the relationship between motivations for gambling—particularly financial motives—and outcomes of gambling. Using a weighted, nationally representative sample of adults in the U.S. (N = 2,806), as well as a sample of adults in the U.S. who have recently bet on sports (N = 1,500), the present work will test the interaction between financial gambling motives and both objective (e.g., income) and subjective (e.g., perceived deprivation) SES in predicting problem gambling. Implications Statement: The study will allow us to draw inferences about the role of gambling motives and SES in Problem Gambling (PG). Findings will help to identify clear risk factors for problem gambling behavior among economically and socially disadvantaged populations

    Re-examining LGBT Resources on College Counseling Center Websites: An Over-time and Cross-country Analysis

    Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) students continue to perceive a hostile climate on college campuses. For students facing these challenges, the university college counseling center website (CCW) may serve as a critical resource. This study provides an updated content analysis of the prevalence of LGBT communication on CCWs. Results showed that there remains a lack of LGBT-specific information about services provided on US CCWs. Furthermore, over-time analyses of 2008 and 2013 data showed that there have been no significant increases in any LGBT communication, and CCWs from religious schools continue to provide significantly less LGBT-related communication than nonreligious institutions. Separate analyses of UK CCWs showed that these websites were more likely than US CCWs to make any mention of LGBT issues but less likely to note group counseling services, links to LGBT-specific pamphlets, and educational outreach services offered. Overall, given attractive features of online health information, as well as the extent that students value CCWs, institutions must pursue stronger efforts to promote LGBT-related web counseling information.     The social dimensions of sustainability and change in diversified farming systems

    Agricultural systems are embedded in wider social-ecological processes that must be considered in any complete discussion of sustainable agriculture. Just as climatic profiles will influence the future viability of crops, institutions, i.e., governance agreements, rural household and community norms, local associations, markets, and agricultural ministries, to name but a few, create the conditions that foster sustainable food systems. Because discussions of agricultural sustainability often overlook the full range of social dimensions, we propose a dual focus on a broad set of criteria, i.e., human health, labor, democratic participation, resiliency, biological and cultural diversity, equity, and ethics, to assess social outcomes, and on institutions that could support diversified farming systems (DFS). A comparative analysis of case studies from California\u27s Central Valley, Mesoamerican coffee agroforestry systems, and European Union agricultural parks finds that DFS practices are unevenly adopted within and among these systems and interdependent with institutional environments that specifically promote diversified farming practices. Influential institutions in these cases include state policies, farmers\u27 cooperatives/associations, and organized civic efforts to influence agroenvironmental policy, share knowledge, and shape markets for more ‘sustainable\u27 products. The Californian and Mesoamerican cases considers organic and fair trade certifications, finding that although they promote several DFS practices and generate social benefits, they are inadequate as a single strategy to promote agricultural sustainability. The complex governance and multifunctional management of Europe\u27s peri-urban agricultural parks show unexpected potential for promoting DFS. Unless DFS are anchored in supportive institutions and evaluated against an inclusive set of social and environmental criteria, short-term investments to advance diversified agriculture could miss a valuable opportunity to connect ecological benefits with social benefits in the medium and long terms
