Conjoint Behavioral Consultation: Application to the School-based Treatment of Anxiety Disorders

    Get PDF
In the current paper we discuss the treatment of childhood anxiety disorders using a problem-solving consultation framework. The role of consultation as a service delivery model in a school setting is elaborated on, as well as the contribution that consultation has in the movement towards evidence-based practices in school psychology. Additionally, a description of the role of consultation specifically in the treatment of childhood anxiety is provided. The role of parents and teachers in treatment is further elucidated, and the separate influence each may have on traditional treatment outcomes is presented. Finally, we discuss the benefits of using a conjoint behavioral consultation model (CBC) of treatment, whereby a mental health professional consults with a child\u27s parents and teachers, who collaborate to assess, monitor, and treat the child\u27s problems. We conclude with a discussion of the benefits of this collaborative approach to treatment of childhood anxiety and illustrate the application of CBC with a case example of selective mutism

The effects and perceived consequences of testing accommodations on math and science performance assessments

    Get PDF
The present study examined the effect accommodations have on test results of students with and without disabilities and documented experts’ judgments about the appropriateness of testing accommodations. Test score data were collected from 218 fourth-grade students with and without disabilities on mathematics and science performance tasks and from eight testing experts who evaluated the fairness and validity of a sample of testing accommodations used with these students. Results indicated that, for most students with disabilities and some students without disabilities, packages of testing accommodations had a moderate to large effect on performance task scores. Expert reviewers rated most accommodations for a student with disabilities as being both valid and fair, and they gave accommodations listed on a student’s individualized education program (IEP) significantly higher validity and fairness ratings than accommodations that were not listed on the student’s IEP. Interpretations of these data are provided and implications for practice and future research are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved

    Get PDF
Objective: To determine the opinions of pharmacy students towards use of podcast as a replacement to a traditional pre-laboratory lecture for a compounding course. Methods: Second year pharmacy students were asked to view a podcast prior to their laboratory section as a replacement to an in-class pre-laboratory lecture. A voluntary survey was administered to obtain student feedback regarding the usefulness of podcasts and preferences for its use in future. Results: A total of 192 out of 232 students responded to the survey conducted during 2011, 2012 and 2013. Of these, 94% of respondents reported viewing entire/ parts of the podcast. Total of 44% viewed it multiple times. Of the students who watched the podcast, 91% reported it was an effective learning tool, and 47% suggested podcasts should be used as a replacement to traditional, in-class lectures. Conclusions: Students responded positively and preferred the podcast as either a replacement or as a supplement to traditional in-class lecture

Reprint of “The Single-Case Reporting Guideline In BEhavioural interventions (SCRIBE) 2016: explanation and elaboration”

    Get PDF
There is substantial evidence that research studies reported in the scientific literature do not provide adequate information so that readers know exactly what was done and what was found. This problem has been addressed by the development of reporting guidelines which tell authors what should be reported and how it should be described. Many reporting guidelines are now available for different types of research designs. There is no such guideline for one type of research design commonly used in the behavioral sciences, the single-case experimental design (SCED). The present study addressed this gap. This report describes the Single-Case Reporting guideline In BEhavioural interventions (SCRIBE) 2016, which is a set of 26 items that authors need to address when writing about SCED research for publication in a scientific journal. Each item is described, a rationale for its inclusion is provided, and examples of adequate reporting taken from the literature are quoted. It is recommended that the SCRIBE 2016 is used by authors preparing manuscripts describing SCED research for publication, as well as journal reviewers and editors who are evaluating such manuscripts.Published versio

Bone Allograft Acid Lysates Change the Genetic Signature of Gingival Fibroblasts.

Bone allografts are widely used as osteoconductive support to guide bone regrowth. Bone allografts are more than a scaffold for the immigrating cells as they maintain some bioactivity of the original bone matrix. Yet, it remains unclear how immigrating cells respond to bone allografts. To this end, we have evaluated the response of mesenchymal cells exposed to acid lysates of bone allografts (ALBA). RNAseq revealed that ALBA has a strong impact on the genetic signature of gingival fibroblasts, indicated by the increased expression of IL11, AREG, C11orf96, STC1, and GK-as confirmed by RT-PCR, and for IL11 and STC1 by immunoassays. Considering that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is stored in the bone matrix and may have caused the expression changes, we performed a proteomics analysis, TGF-β immunoassay, and smad2/3 nuclear translocation. ALBA neither showed detectable TGF-β nor was the lysate able to induce smad2/3 translocation. Nevertheless, the TGF-β receptor type I kinase inhibitor SB431542 significantly decreased the expression of IL11, AREG, and C11orf96, suggesting that other agonists than TGF-β are responsible for the robust cell response. The findings suggest that IL11, AREG, and C11orf96 expression in mesenchymal cells can serve as a bioassay reflecting the bioactivity of the bone allografts

As possibilidades dialĂłgicas do fĂłrum de discussĂŁo no ambiente virtual de aprendizagem

    Get PDF

Properties of bootstrap tests for N-of-1 studies

    Get PDF
N-of-1 study designs involve the collection and analyses of repeated measures data from an individual not using an intervention and using an intervention. This study explores the use of semi-parametric and parametric bootstrap tests in the analysis of N-of-1 studies under a single time series framework in the presence of autocorrelation. When the Type I error rates of bootstrap tests are compared to Wald tests, our results show the bootstrap tests have more desirable properties. We compare the results for normally distributed errors with those for contaminated normally distributed errors and find that, except for when there is relatively large autocorrelation, there is little difference between the power of the parametric and semi-parametric bootstrap tests. We also experiment with two intervention designs: ABAB and AB, and show the ABAB design has more power. The results provide guidelines for designing N-of-1 studies, in the sense of how many observations and how many intervention changes are needed to achieve a certain level of power and which test should be performed

Cross-Omics Comparison of Stress Responses in Mesothelial Cells Exposed to Heat- versus Filter-Sterilized Peritoneal Dialysis Fluids

    Get PDF
Recent research suggests that cytoprotective responses, such as expression of heat-shock proteins, might be inadequately induced in mesothelial cells by heat-sterilized peritoneal dialysis (PD) fluids. This study compares transcriptome data and multiple protein expression profiles for providing new insight into regulatory mechanisms. Two-dimensional difference gel electrophoresis (2D-DIGE) based proteomics and topic defined gene expression microarray-based transcriptomics techniques were used to evaluate stress responses in human omental peritoneal mesothelial cells in response to heat- or filter-sterilized PD fluids. Data from selected heat-shock proteins were validated by 2D western-blot analysis. Comparison of proteomics and transcriptomics data discriminated differentially regulated protein abundance into groups depending on correlating or noncorrelating transcripts. Inadequate abundance of several heat-shock proteins following exposure to heat-sterilized PD fluids is not reflected on the mRNA level indicating interference beyond transcriptional regulation. For the first time, this study describes evidence for posttranscriptional inadequacy of heat-shock protein expression by heat- sterilized PD fluids as a novel cytotoxic property. Cross-omics technologies introduce a novel way of understanding PDF bioincompatibility and searching for new interventions to reestablish adequate cytoprotective responses
