Anderson localization in Bose-Einstein condensates
The understanding of disordered quantum systems is still far from being
complete, despite many decades of research on a variety of physical systems. In
this review we discuss how Bose-Einstein condensates of ultracold atoms in
disordered potentials have opened a new window for studying fundamental
phenomena related to disorder. In particular, we point our attention to recent
experimental studies on Anderson localization and on the interplay of disorder
and weak interactions. These realize a very promising starting point for a
deeper understanding of the complex behaviour of interacting, disordered

Radio pulsar populations
The goal of this article is to summarize the current state of play in the
field of radio pulsar statistics. Simply put, from the observed sample of
objects from a variety of surveys with different telescopes, we wish to infer
the properties of the underlying sample and to connect these with other
astrophysical populations (for example supernova remnants or X-ray binaries).
The main problem we need to tackle is the fact that, like many areas of
science, the observed populations are often heavily biased by a variety of
selection effects. After a review of the main effects relevant to radio
pulsars, I discuss techniques to correct for them and summarize some of the
most recent results. Perhaps the main point I would like to make in this
article is that current models to describe the population are far from complete
and often suffer from strong covariances between input parameters. That said,
there are a number of very interesting conclusions that can be made concerning
the evolution of neutron stars based on current data. While the focus of this
review will be on the population of isolated Galactic pulsars, I will also
briefly comment on millisecond and binary pulsars as well as the pulsar content

Neuroinflammation and structural injury of the fetal ovine brain following intra-amniotic Candida albicans exposure.
BackgroundIntra-amniotic Candida albicans (C. Albicans) infection is associated with preterm birth and high morbidity and mortality rates. Survivors are prone to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. The mechanisms leading to these adverse neonatal brain outcomes remain largely unknown. To better understand the mechanisms underlying C. albicans-induced fetal brain injury, we studied immunological responses and structural changes of the fetal brain in a well-established translational ovine model of intra-amniotic C. albicans infection. In addition, we tested whether these potential adverse outcomes of the fetal brain were improved in utero by antifungal treatment with fluconazole.MethodsPregnant ewes received an intra-amniotic injection of 10(7) colony-forming units C. albicans or saline (controls) at 3 or 5 days before preterm delivery at 0.8 of gestation (term ~ 150 days). Fetal intra-amniotic/intra-peritoneal injections of fluconazole or saline (controls) were administered 2 days after C. albicans exposure. Post mortem analyses for fungal burden, peripheral immune activation, neuroinflammation, and white matter/neuronal injury were performed to determine the effects of intra-amniotic C. albicans and fluconazole treatment.ResultsIntra-amniotic exposure to C. albicans caused a severe systemic inflammatory response, illustrated by a robust increase of plasma interleukin-6 concentrations. Cerebrospinal fluid cultures were positive for C. albicans in the majority of the 3-day C. albicans-exposed animals whereas no positive cultures were present in the 5-day C. albicans-exposed and fluconazole-treated animals. Although C. albicans was not detected in the brain parenchyma, a neuroinflammatory response in the hippocampus and white matter was seen which was characterized by increased microglial and astrocyte activation. These neuroinflammatory changes were accompanied by structural white matter injury. Intra-amniotic fluconazole reduced fetal mortality but did not attenuate neuroinflammation and white matter injury.ConclusionsIntra-amniotic C. albicans exposure provoked acute systemic and neuroinflammatory responses with concomitant white matter injury. Fluconazole treatment prevented systemic inflammation without attenuating cerebral inflammation and injury
Pulsar Results with the Fermi Large Area Telescope
The launch of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has heralded a new era in
the study of gamma-ray pulsars. The population of confirmed gamma-ray pulsars
has gone from 6-7 to more than 60, and the superb sensitivity of the Large Area
Telescope (LAT) on Fermi has allowed the detailed study of their spectra and
light curves. Twenty-four of these pulsars were discovered in blind searches of
the gamma-ray data, and twenty-one of these are, at present, radio quiet,
despite deep radio follow-up observations. In addition, millisecond pulsars
have been confirmed as a class of gamma-ray emitters, both individually and
collectively in globular clusters. Recently, radio searches in the direction of
LAT sources with no likely counterparts have been highly productive, leading to
the discovery of a large number of new millisecond pulsars. Taken together,
these discoveries promise a great improvement in the understanding of the
gamma-ray emission properties and Galactic population of pulsars. We summarize
some of the results stemming from these newly-detected pulsars and their timing

Loading protocols for European regions of low to moderate seismicity
Existing loading protocols for quasi-static cyclic testing of structures are based on recordings from regions of high seismicity. For regions of low to moderate seismicity they overestimate imposed cumulative damage demands. Since structural capacities are a function of demand, existing loading protocols applied to specimens representative of structures in low to moderate seismicity regions might underestimate structural strength and deformation capacity. To overcome this problem, this paper deals with the development of cyclic loading protocols for European regions of low to moderate seismicity. Cumulative damage demands imposed by a set of 60 ground motion records are evaluated for a wide variety of SDOF systems that reflect the fundamental properties of a large portion of the existing building stock. The ground motions are representative of the seismic hazard level corresponding to a 2% probability of exceedance in 50 years in a European moderate seismicity region. To meet the calculated cumulative damage demands, loading protocols for different structural types and vibration periods are developed. For comparison, cumulative seismic demands are also calculated for existing protocols and a set of records that was used in a previous study on loading protocols for regions of high seismicity. The median cumulative demands for regions of low to moderate seismicity are significantly less than those of existing protocols and records of high seismicity regions. For regions of low to moderate seismicity the new protocols might therefore result in larger strength and deformation capacities and hence in more cost-effective structural configurations or less expensive retrofit measures
Assessing the determinants of stillbirths and early neonatal deaths using routinely collected data in an inner city area
Abstract Background Within the UK there is considerable variation in the perinatal mortality rate. The objective of this study was to assess the factors associated with stillbirths and early neonatal deaths (ENND) and the suitability of the available databases in a health authority with one of the highest rates in the country. Methods Two case-control studies were carried out in three hospital trusts in the Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham Health Authority, London, using routinely collected information. In one study, 342 stillbirths and 1,368 controls were included, and in the other study, 205 ENND and 820 controls were included. In the two studies cases and controls were matched for hospital trust. Results A birthweight below 1.5 kg was found in 54% and 48% of the stillbirths and ENND, respectively. More than 50% of the cases, stillbirths and ENND, had a length of gestation below 32 weeks. Length of gestation, birthweight, emergency caesarean section and age of the mother were associated with stillbirths. Birthweight and Apgar score at 1 minute as a categorical variable were associated with ENND. There was no direct evidence of an effect of social deprivation on the outcomes of interest. Conclusion Birthweight and length of gestation are the most influential factors on an unfavourable outcome. Conception at an older age has a serious impact on stillbirth rates. In our health authority social disadvantage did not have a direct impact on stillbirth and ENND. Maternity information systems should collect routine data on fewer variables, but their quality in terms of value, standardization and completion rates must improve.</p
Photodisintegration of He into p+t
The two-body photodisintegration of He into a proton and a triton has
been studied using the CEBAF Large-Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson
Laboratory. Real photons produced with the Hall-B bremsstrahlung-tagging system
in the energy range from 0.35 to 1.55 GeV were incident on a liquid He
target. This is the first measurement of the photodisintegration of He
above 0.4 GeV. The differential cross sections for the He
reaction have been measured as a function of photon-beam energy and
proton-scattering angle, and are compared with the latest model calculations by
J.-M. Laget. At 0.6-1.2 GeV, our data are in good agreement only with the
calculations that include three-body mechanisms, thus confirming their
importance. These results reinforce the conclusion of our previous study of the
three-body breakup of He that demonstrated the great importance of
three-body mechanisms in the energy region 0.5-0.8 GeV .Comment: 13 pages submitted in one tgz file containing 2 tex file and 22

Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function for in the Resonance Region
The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function
has been measured in the resonance region at and 0.65
GeV. Data for the reaction were taken at Jefferson Lab
with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally
polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. For the first time a complete
angular distribution was measured, permitting the separation of different
non-resonant amplitudes using a partial wave analysis. Comparison with previous
beam asymmetry measurements at MAMI indicate a deviation from the predicted
dependence of using recent phenomenological

Two-Nucleon Momentum Distributions Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n
We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at 2.2 GeV over a wide kinematic
range. The kinetic energy distribution for `fast' nucleons (p > 250 MeV/c)
peaks where two nucleons each have 20% or less, and the third nucleon has most
of the transferred energy. These fast pp and pn pairs are back-to-back with
little momentum along the three-momentum transfer, indicating that they are
spectators. Experimental and theoretical evidence indicates that we have
measured distorted two-nucleon momentum distributions by striking the third
nucleon and detecting the spectator correlated pair.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, submitted to PR
Stationary Black Holes: Uniqueness and Beyond
The spectrum of known black-hole solutions to the stationary Einstein
equations has been steadily increasing, sometimes in unexpected ways. In
particular, it has turned out that not all black-hole-equilibrium
configurations are characterized by their mass, angular momentum and global
charges. Moreover, the high degree of symmetry displayed by vacuum and
electro-vacuum black-hole spacetimes ceases to exist in self-gravitating
non-linear field theories. This text aims to review some developments in the
subject and to discuss them in light of the uniqueness theorem for the
