Spherical Orbifolds for Cosmic Topology
Harmonic analysis is a tool to infer cosmic topology from the measured
astrophysical cosmic microwave background CMB radiation. For overall positive
curvature, Platonic spherical manifolds are candidates for this analysis. We
combine the specific point symmetry of the Platonic manifolds with their deck
transformations. This analysis in topology leads from manifolds to orbifolds.
We discuss the deck transformations of the orbifolds and give eigenmodes for
the harmonic analysis as linear combinations of Wigner polynomials on the
3-sphere. These provide new tools for detecting cosmic topology from the CMB

Neural correlates of cognitive intervention in persons at risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
Cognitive training is an emergent approach that has begun to receive increased attention in recent years as a non-pharmacological, cost-effective intervention for Alzheimer's disease (AD). There has been increasing behavioral evidence regarding training-related improvement in cognitive performance in early stages of AD. Although these studies provide important insight about the efficacy of cognitive training, neuroimaging studies are crucial to pinpoint changes in brain structure and function associated with training and to examine their overlap with pathology in AD. In this study, we reviewed the existing neuroimaging studies on cognitive training in persons at risk of developing AD to provide an overview of the overlap between neural networks rehabilitated by the current training methods and those affected in AD. The data suggest a consistent training-related increase in brain activity in medial temporal, prefrontal, and posterior default mode networks, as well as increase in gray matter structure in frontoparietal and entorhinal regions. This pattern differs from the observed pattern in healthy older adults that shows a combination of increased and decreased activity in response to training. Detailed investigation of the data suggests that training in persons at risk of developing AD mainly improves compensatory mechanisms and partly restores the affected functions. While current neuroimaging studies are quite helpful in identifying the mechanisms underlying cognitive training, the data calls for future multi-modal neuroimaging studies with focus on multi-domain cognitive training, network level connectivity, and individual differences in response to training
DNA nano-mechanics: how proteins deform the double helix
It is a standard exercise in mechanical engineering to infer the external
forces and torques on a body from its static shape and known elastic
properties. Here we apply this kind of analysis to distorted double-helical DNA
in complexes with proteins. We extract the local mean forces and torques acting
on each base-pair of bound DNA from high-resolution complex structures. Our
method relies on known elastic potentials and a careful choice of coordinates
of the well-established rigid base-pair model of DNA. The results are robust
with respect to parameter and conformation uncertainty. They reveal the complex
nano-mechanical patterns of interaction between proteins and DNA. Being
non-trivially and non-locally related to observed DNA conformations, base-pair
forces and torques provide a new view on DNA-protein binding that complements

Genomic function during the lampbrush chromosome stage of amphibian oogenesis
Throughout its lengthy developmental history the disposition of the genetic material in the amphibian oocyte nucleus differs from that in other cell types. The chromosomes in the oocyte nucleus, arrested for the whole of oogenesis at the prophase of the first meiotic division, are known to contain at least the tetraploid amount of DNA.(1,2) Oogenesis in amphibia requires months or even years to complete, depending on the species
CF6-6D engine short-term performance deterioration
Studies conducted as part of the NASA-Lewis CF6 jet engine diagnostics program are summarized. An 82-engine sample of DC-10-10 aircraft engine checkout data that were gathered to define the extent and magnitude of CF6-6D short term performance deterioration were analyzed. These data are substantiated by the performance testing and analytical teardown of CF6-6D short term deterioration engine serial number (ESN) 451507

Cruise cockpit recordings and test cell performance data in conjunction with hardware inspection data from airline overhaul shops were analyzed to define the extent and magnitude of performance deterioration of the General Electric CF6-6D model engine. These studies successfully isolated short-term deterioration from the longer term, and defined areas where a significant reduction in aircraft energy requirements for the 1980's can be realized. Unrestored losses which remain after engine refurbishment represent over 70% of the loss at engine shop visit. Sixty-three percent of the unrestored losses are cost-effective to restore which could reduce fuel consumed by CF6-6D engines in 1980 by 10.9 million gallons
Changes in Polarization Position Angle across the Eclipse in the Double Pulsar System
We investigate the changes in polarization position angle in radiation from
pulsar A around the eclipse in the Double Pulsar system PSR J0737-3039A/B at
the 20 cm and 50 cm wavelengths using the Parkes 64-m telescope. The changes
are ~2\sigma\ during and shortly after the eclipse at 20 cm but less
significant at 50 cm. We show that the changes in position angle during the
eclipse can be modelled by differential synchrotron absorption in the eclipse
regions. Position angle changes after the eclipse are interpreted as Faraday
rotation in the magnetotail of pulsar B. Implied charge densities are
consistent with the Goldreich-Julian density, suggesting that the particle
energies in the magnetotail are mildly relativistic.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letter
Overlapping Unit Cells in 3d Quasicrystal Structure
A 3-dimensional quasiperiodic lattice, with overlapping unit cells and
periodic in one direction, is constructed using grid and projection methods
pioneered by de Bruijn. Each unit cell consists of 26 points, of which 22 are
the vertices of a convex polytope P, and 4 are interior points also shared with
other neighboring unit cells. Using Kronecker's theorem the frequencies of all

The Carbon content in the Galactic CygnusX/DR21 star forming region
Observations of Carbon bearing species are among the most important
diagnostic probes of ongoing star formation. CO is a surrogate for H and is
found in the vicinity of star formation sites. There, [CI] emission is thought
to outline the dense molecular cores and extend into the lower density regions,
where the impinging interstellar UV radiation field plays a critical role for
the dissociation and ionization processes. Emission of ionized carbon ([CII])
is found to be even more extended than [CI] and is linking up with the ionized
medium. These different tracers emphasize the importance of multi-wavelength
studies to draw a coherent picture of the processes driving and driven by high
mass star formation. Until now, large scale surveys were only done with low
resolution, such as the COBE full sky survey, or were biased to a few selected
bright sources (e.g. Yamamoto et al. 2001, Schneider et al. 2003). A broader
basis of unbiased, high-resolution observations of [CI], CO, and [CII] may play
