Narrating the Lived Reality of Illness in Comics and Literature. Research by the PathoGraphics Team at Freie Universität Berli

Memory thieves? Representing dementia in Holocaust literature

This article examines the contemporary phenomenon of fiction and film about Holocaust survivors suffering from dementia. Earlier examples of this kind use dementia to explore the interior states of survivor guilt and the suppression of painful memories. By contrast, twenty-first-century representations convey the passing on of Holocaust memory to the next generation. These individuals, in the role of offspring or carers, act as the investigators and inheritors of a history that either has vanished from the survivor’s memory or appears in the present as if it were still taking place. Such works are expressive of cultural anxiety at the vanishing of the generation of eyewitnesses to the events of the Holocaust yet also act to defuse the unwelcome lessons such witnesses might impart

Verpflanzungsgebiete : Wissenskulturen und Poetik der Transplantation

Die Transplantationschirurgie wirft – bei all ihren Erfolgen – juristische, bioethische und philosophische Fragen auf und provoziert kollektive Hoffnungen, Phantasien und Ängste, die sich in Literatur und Film niederschlagen. Zugleich können literarische Texte und Filme das Thema neu konturieren und dabei eigenständige künstlerische Darstellungsformen entwickeln. Irmela Marei Krüger-Fürhoffs Studie untersucht Sujet und Verfahren der Transplantation in Fiktion und Wissenschaft und betritt damit literaturwissenschaftliches und kulturwissenschaftliches Neuland. Auf der Grundlage von 90 literarischen Texten und 40 Filmen vor allem aus dem deutschen, englischen und französischen Sprachraum rekonstruiert die Monographie die kulturellen Repräsentationen der Transplantationsmedizin vom 19. Jahrhundert bis zur Gegenwart. Dabei nimmt sie Auseinandersetzungen mit realen Erfahrungen ebenso in den Blick wie utopische bzw. dystopische Imaginationen und analysiert, wie Literatur und Film auf medien-, gattungs- und genrespezifische Weise an der Konstruktion, kritischen Reflexion, aber auch Durchsetzung von medizinischem Wissen und Handeln beteiligt sind. Ein besonderes Interesse der Studie gilt den Spezifika einer Poetik der Transplantation, d.h. den narrativen und ästhetischen Inszenierungen von Wissen sowie den Denkfiguren, die für die Darstellung von 'Verpflanzungen' als chirurgisch-immunologisches, wissenshistorisches und rhetorisches Verfahren eingesetzt werden

Reclaiming illness through comics

Der Katalog zur Ausstellung "SICK! Kranksein im Comic" (Berliner Medizinhistorisches Museum der Charité, 27.10.2017-4.3.2018) präsentiert Comics verschiedener Künstler und Länder, die die vielfältigen Erfahrungen mit medizinischer Diagnose, Leiden, Genesung, Pflege und Therapie darstellen. Konzipiert wurde die Ausstellung vom Forschungsprojekt "PathoGraphics" an der Freien Universität Berlin. The catalogue to the exhibition "SICK! Reclaiming illness through comics" (Berlin Museum of Medical History at the Charité, 27.10.2017-4.3.2018) presents comics from different artists and countries which deal with the complex experiences of medical diagnosis, suffering, recovery, therapy and care.
