Ich stosowanie ma kluczowe znaczenie dla osiągnięcia sukcesu i przeżycia rannych w niesprzyjających warunkach środowiska taktycznego. Doświadczenia medycyny wojskowej i praktyczne rozwiązania w celu zapewnienia skutecznej hemostazy lub zachowania restrykcyjnej płynoterapii w przypadku krwotoków wewnętrznych mogą znaleźć zastosowanie również w cywilnej opiece przedszpitalnej.The authors presented the practical conclusions and therapeutic recommendations for the heavily bleeding patients, managed under combat conditions. Such therapy is vital for the wounded in the hostile tactical environment. The military medical solutions for assuring the effective hemostasis or applying the restrictive fluid therapy in internal bleeding cases may be useful also in civilian medicine

    Some Unitary, Binary, and Ternary Non-TiO2 Photocatalysts

    Among all kinds of green earth and renewable energy projects underway, semiconductor photocatalysis has received wide interest because it provides an easy way to directly utilize the energy of either natural sunlight or artificial indoor illumination. TiO2, the most widely used photocatalyst, due to its wide band gap, can only be activated under UV irradiation, and thus, the development of novel semiconductor photocatalysts makes a significant advancement in photocatalytic functional materials. One of the effective strategies to overcome this shortcoming is photosensitizing these wide band gap semiconductors with narrow band gap semiconductors which have proper energy levels. This method can not only improve the photocatalytic activity, due to increasing visible-light-harvesting efficiency, but also can decrease the recombination of the charge carriers, because the formation of n–n or n–p heterojunctions between the combined semiconductors can induce internal electric fields between them. In this regard, this review presents some unitary, binary, and ternary non-TiO2 photocatalysts used for the degradation for organic pollutants and for water splitting

    Estimating the impact of inflow on the chemistry of two different caldera type lakes located on the Bali Island (Indonesia)

    This paper is a preliminary attempt to assess the composition of pollutants in two different caldera lakes situated in the Indonesian Archipelago: Batur and Bratan. Both lakes are characterized by largely different physico-chemical regimes; Batur Lake is located in an area that is currently volcanically active, unlike Bratan Lake. The latter is much smaller and shallower than Batur Lake. The concentration of pollutants in the Indonesian equatorial lakes is largely unknown, and the impact of both biological and geothermal processes on their distribution requires attention. This study shows that the concentrations of cations (Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+), anions (SO42-, F-, Cl-, Br-) and trace elements (Li, B, Al, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Sn, Cs, Ba, Pb, U, Be, Ag, Sb, Tl, Bi) differ greatly between both lakes. Most chemical parameters determined in volcanically influenced Batur Lake were tens to hundreds times higher than in Bratan Lake, and in the case of trace metals, the ratios of the two lakes' concentrations reached several hundreds. This study also compared the composition and concentration levels of organic compounds in both lakes, such as fatty acids, halocarbons and esters. On the other hand, the content of organic chemicals in the lakes also results from biological activity by phytoplankton, zooplankton and bacteria

    Biocompatibility of Titania Nanotube Coatings Enriched with Silver Nanograins by Chemical Vapor Deposition

    Bioactivity investigations of titania nanotube (TNT) coatings enriched with silver nanograins (TNT/Ag) have been carried out. TNT/Ag nanocomposite materials were produced by combining the electrochemical anodization and chemical vapor deposition methods. Fabricated coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Raman spectroscopy. The release effect of silver ions fromTNT/Ag composites immersed in bodily fluids, has been studied using inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Themetabolic activity assay (MTT) was applied to determine the L929 murine fibroblasts adhesion and proliferation on the surface of TNT/Ag coatings. Moreover, the results of immunoassays (using peripheral blood mononuclear cells—PBMCs isolated from rats) allowed the estimation of the immunological activity of TNT/Ag surface materials. Antibacterial activity of TNT/Ag coatings with different morphological and structural features was estimated against two Staphylococcus aureus strains (ATCC 29213 and H9). The TNT/Ag nanocomposite layers produced revealed a good biocompatibility promoting the fibroblast adhesion and proliferation. A desirable anti-biofilm activity against the S. aureus reference strain was mainly noticed for these TiO2 nanotube coatings, which contain dispersed Ag nanograins deposited on their surface

    Structural Characterization of Covalently Stabilized Human Cystatin C Oligomers

    Human cystatin C (HCC), a cysteine-protease inhibitor, exists as a folded monomer under physiological conditions but has the ability to self-assemble via domain swapping into multimeric states, including oligomers with a doughnut-like structure. The structure of the monomeric HCC has been solved by X-ray crystallography, and a covalently linked version of HCC (stab-1 HCC) is able to form stable oligomeric species containing 10−12 monomeric subunits. We have performed molecular modeling, and in conjunction with experimental parameters obtained from atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements, we observe that the structures are essentially flat, with a height of about 2 nm, and the distance between the outer edge of the ring and the edge of the central cavity is ~5.1 nm. These dimensions correspond to the height and diameter of one stab-1 HCC subunit and we present a dodecamer model for stabilized cystatin C oligomers using molecular dynamics simulations and experimentally measured parameters. Given that oligomeric species in protein aggregation reactions are often transient and very highly heterogeneous, the structural information presented here on these isolated stab-1 HCC oligomers may be useful to further explore the physiological relevance of different structural species of cystatin C in relation to protein misfolding disease

    Evaluation of the health behaviors of women in multiple pregnancies — a preliminary study

    Objectives: The aim of the paper was to assess which health behavior indicators were characteristic for women with a multiple pregnancy. Material and method: The study involved 35 women in multiple pregnancies. The inclusion criteria were: the completion of the 22nd week of pregnancy (22 Hbd, i.e., 22 weeks and 1/7) and the consent of the women to participate in the study. We used an original questionnaire devised by us specifically for our study, as well as a standardized research tool, Juczyński’s Health Behavior Inventory questionnaire, for the assessment of the pregnant women’s health behaviors. Results: The overall rate of health behaviors was high and was on average 93.9 ± 10.8 points (7 sten scores). Indicators of the health behaviors of women in multiple pregnancies were high across all categories. However, the highest rate was observed in preventive behaviors. Conclusions: The overall rate of health behaviors of women with a multiple pregnancy and all the individual behavior category indicators were high. However, the highest rate was for preventive behaviors. The indicator values of the health behaviors of the pregnant women in the study were not dependent on the variables adopted in this paper
