Deconvolution of directly precipitating and trap-precipitating electrons in solar flare hard x-rays. III.Yohkoh hard x-ray telescope data analysis
We analyze the footpoint separation d and flux asymmetry A of magnetically conjugate double footpoint sources in hard X-ray images from the Yohkoh Hard X-Ray Telescope (HXT). The data set of 54 solar flares includes all events simultaneously observed with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) in high time resolution mode. From the CGRO data we deconvolved the direct-precipitation and trap-precipitation components previously (in Paper II). Using the combined measurements from CGRO and HXT, we develop an asymmetric trap model that allows us to quantify the relative fractions of four different electron components, i.e., the ratios of direct-precipitating (q_P1, q_P2) and trap-precipitating electrons (q_T1, q_T2) at both magnetically conjugate footpoints. We find mean ratios of q_P1=0.14+/-0.06, q_P2=0.26+/-0.10, and q_T=q_T1+q_T2=0.60+/-0.13. We assume an isotropic pitch-angle distribution at the acceleration site and double-sided trap precipitation (q_T2/q_T1=q_P2/q_P1) to determine the conjugate loss-cone angles (alpha_1=42^deg+/-11^deg and alpha_2=52^deg+/-10^deg) and magnetic mirror ratiosat both footpoints (R_1=1.6,...,4.0 and R_2=1.3,...,2.5). From the relative displacement of footpoint sources we also measure altitude differences of hard X-ray emission at different energies, which are found to decrease systematically with higher energies, with a statistical height difference of h_Lo-h_M1=980+/-250 km and h_M1-h_M2=310+/-300 km between the three lower HXT energy channels (Lo, M1, M2
First Detection of Ar-K Line Emission from the Cygnus Loop
We observed the Cygnus Loop with XMM-Newton (9 pointings) and Suzaku (32
pointings) between 2002 and 2008. The total effective exposure time is 670.2
ks. By using all of the available data, we intended to improve a
signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum. Accordingly, the accumulated spectra
obtained by the XIS and the EPIC show some line features around 3 keV that are
attributed to the S He and Ar He lines, respectively. Since the
Cygnus Loop is an evolved (10,000 yr) supernova remnant whose temperature
is relatively low (1 keV) compared with other young remnants, its spectrum
is generally faint above 3.0 keV, no emission lines, such as the Ar-K line have
ever been detected. The detection of the Ar-K line is the first time and we
found that its abundance is significantly higher than that of the solar value;
9.0 and 8.4 (in units of solar), estimated from
the XIS and the EPIC spectra, respectively. We conclude that the Ar-K line
originated from the ejecta of the Cygnus Loop. Follow-up X-ray observations to
tightly constrain the abundances of Ar-rich ejecta will be useful to accurately
estimate the progenitor's mass.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
Signatures of current loop coalescence in solar flares
The nonlinear coalescence instability of current carrying solar loops can explain many of the characteristics of the solar flares such as their impulsive nature, heating and high energy particle acceleration, amplitude oscillations of electromagnetic emission as well as the characteristics of 2-D microwave images obtained during a solar flare. The physical characteristics of the explosive coalescence of currents are presented in detail through computer simulation and theory. Canonical characteristics of the explosive coalescence are: (1) a large amount of impulsive increase of kinetic energies of electrons and ions; (2) simultaneous heating and acceleration of electrons and ions in high and low energy spectra; (3) ensuing quasi-periodic amplitude oscillations in fields and particle quantities; and (4) the double peak (or triple peak) structure in these profiles, participate in the coalescence process, yielding varieties of phenomena
The Effect of Variability in Soil Hydraulic Properties on Water Flow in A Forested Hill Slope
The size distribution of magnetic bright points derived from Hinode/SOT observations
Context. Magnetic Bright Points (MBPs) are small-scale magnetic features in
the solar photosphere. They may be a possible source of coronal heating by
rapid footpoint motions that cause magnetohydrodynamical waves. The number and
size distribution are of vital importance in estimating the small
scale-magnetic-field energy. Aims. The size distribution of MBPs is derived for
G-band images acquired by the Hinode/SOT instrument. Methods. For
identification purposes, a new automated segmentation and identification
algorithm was developed. Results. For a sampling of 0.108 arcsec/pixel, we
derived a mean diameter of (218 +- 48) km for the MBPs. For the full resolved
data set with a sampling of 0.054 arcsec/pixel, the size distribution shifted
to a mean diameter of (166 +- 31) km. The determined diameters are consistent
with earlier published values. The shift is most probably due to the different
spatial sampling. Conclusions. We conclude that the smallest magnetic elements
in the solar photosphere cannot yet be resolved by G-band observations. The
influence of discretisation effects (sampling) has also not yet been
investigated sufficiently.Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, Volume 498, Issue 1, 2009, pp.289-29

Acoustic damping and dispersion in vitreous germanium oxide
New Brillouin scattering measurements of velocity and attenuation of sound in
the hypersonic regime are presented. The data are analyzed together with the
literature results at sonic and ultrasonic frequencies. As usual, thermally
activated relaxation of structural entities describes the attenuation at sonic
and ultrasonic frequencies. As already shown in vitreous silica, we conclude
that the damping by network viscosity, resulting from relaxation of thermal
phonons, must be taken into account to describe the attenuation at hypersonic
frequencies. In addition, the bare velocity obtained by subtracting to the
experimental data the effect of the two above mechanisms is constant for
temperatures below 250 K, but increases almost linearly above, up to the glass
transition temperature. This might indicate the presence of a progressive local
polyamorphic transition, as already suggested for vitreous silica.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

GIRAFFE multiple integral field units at VLT: a unique tool to recover velocity fields of distant galaxies
The GIRAFFE spectrograph is unique in providing the integral field
spectroscopy of fifteen distant galaxies at the same time. It has been
successfully implemented at the second VLT unit within the FLAMES facility. We
present GIRAFFE observations acquired during the Guaranteed Time Observation of
the Paris Observatory, using total exposure times ranging from 6 to 12 hours.
The reduced 3D cube of each galaxy has been deconvolved using our new package
DisGal3D. This software has been written using the only assumption that UV
light traces the emission line regions. The comparison between GIRAFFE spectra
and HST imagery allows us to recover details on velocity fields as small as
0.3-0.4 arcsec. It has been successfully tested using Fabry Perot observations
of nearby galaxies purposely redshifted to large distances. We present here
preliminary results for three distant galaxies at 0.45< z < 0.65, whose
velocity fields have been derived with exquisite spectral (R=10000) and spatial
resolutions. Observed velocity fields range from disturbed fields expected in
major merger events to those of regular spiral with minor perturbations. For
the latter, one could accurately derive the dynamical major axis and the
maximal rotational velocity. We conclude that dynamical properties of a large
number of distant galaxies can be routinely derived at VLT. This opens a new
avenue towards the understanding of the galaxy formation and evolution during
the last 8 Gyr.Comment: 4 pages, 3 jpeg figures. to appear in A&
