    Grain Shipments on the Mississippi River System: A Long-Term Projection

    The costs of delays for shipping commodities on the Mississippi River are important and adversely impact growth in shipments. Lock and dam expansion requires substantial capital investment and an extended time period to complete. This study analyzes delay costs and the competitive position of grain shipments on the Mississippi River system. A spatial optimization model of the world grain trade was developed. Results indicated that without expansion in barge capacity, delay costs in 2020 would increase on each reach, with some up to $1.08/mt. Expansion results in reduced delay costs. Barge demand is also impacted by rail capacity. Finally, expanding the locks would result in a re-allocation of shipments among modes, reaches, and ports, notwithstanding minor adjustments in production.Agribusiness, International Relations/Trade,

    Gardening is a common leisure pursuit for many older individuals, and research indicates that older individuals who garden are in better overall health than non-gardeners. Although there are numerous health benefits of gardening activities for older adults, this subject has not been explored sufficiently in the field of apparel design. Thus, the purpose of this study is to explore design factors in developing gardening garments for older adults. This study focuses particularly on the population who were born before the year 1960 because this age cohort has begun retiring and has significant buying power. Findings offer insights for designers who seek to better understand and market to this age cohort by designing relevant garments for their gardening activities

    BackgroundThe Goeckerman regimen remains one of the oldest, most reliable treatment options for patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. Goeckerman therapy currently consists of exposure to ultraviolet B light and application of crude coal tar. The details of the procedure can be confusing and challenging to understand for the first-time patient or provider.ObjectiveTo present a freely available online guide and video on Goeckerman treatment that explains the regimen in a patient-oriented manner.MethodsThe Goeckerman protocol used at the University of California-San Francisco Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center as well as available information from the literature were reviewed to design a comprehensive guide for patients receiving Goeckerman treatment.ResultsWe created a printable guide and video resource that covers the supplies needed for Goeckerman regimen, the treatment procedure, expected results, how to monitor for adverse events, and discharge planning.ConclusionThis new resource is beneficial for prospective patients planning to undergo Goeckerman treatment, healthcare providers, and trainees who want to learn more about this procedure.     BackgroundPUVA treatment is photochemotherapy for psoriasis that combines psoralen with UVA radiation. Although PUVA is a very effective treatment option for psoriasis, there is an absence of patient resources explaining and demonstrating the process of PUVA. Studies have shown that patients who viewed videos explaining the treatment procedures for various medical conditions had a greater understanding of their treatment and were more active participants in their health.ObjectiveTo present a freely available online guide and video on PUVA treatment designed for patient education on PUVA.MethodsThe PUVA treatment protocol used at the University of California-San Francisco Psoriasis and Skin Treatment Center as well as available information from the literature was reviewed to design a comprehensive guide for patients receiving PUVA treatment.ResultsWe created a printable guide and video resource that reviews the benefits and risks of PUVA, discusses the three types of PUVA (hand-foot soak, full body soak, and systemic), demonstrates the PUVA process, and provides practical tips for safe use.ConclusionOnline media and video delivers material in a way that is flexible and often familiar to patients. This new format is beneficial for prospective patients planning to undergo PUVA treatment, health-care providers, and trainees who want to learn more about this treatment

    A search for 85.5- and 86.6-GHz methanol maser emission

    We have used the Australia Telescope National Facility Mopra 22m millimetre telescope to search for emission from the 85.5-GHz and 86.6-GHz transitions of methanol. The search was targeted towards 22 star formation regions which exhibit maser emission in the 107.0-GHz methanol transition, as well as in the 6.6-GHz transition characteristic of class II methanol maser sources. A total of 22 regions were searched at 85.5 GHz resulting in 5 detections, of which 1 appears to be a newly discovered maser. For the 86.6-GHz transition observations were made of 18 regions which yielded 2 detections, but no new maser sources. This search demonstrates that emission from the 85.5- and 86.6-GHz transitions is rare. Detection of maser emission from either of these transitions therefore indicates the presence of special conditions, different from those in the majority of methanol maser sources. We have observed temporal variability in the 86.6-GHz emission towards 345.010+1.792, which along with the very narrow line width, confirms that the emission is a maser in this source. We have combined our current observations with published data for the 6.6-, 12.1-, 85.5-, 86.6-, 107.0-, 108.8- and 156.6-GHz transitions for comparison with the maser model of Sobolev & Deguchi (1994). This has allowed us to estimate the likely ranges of dust temperature, gas density, and methanol column density, both for typical methanol maser sources and for those sources which also show 107.0-GHz emission.Comment: 11 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS, Latex, mn2e.cl

    A CO Line and Infrared Continuum Study of the Active Star-Forming Complex W51

    We present the results of an extensive observational study of the active star-forming complex W51 that was observed in the J=2-1 transition of the 12CO and 13CO molecules over a 1.25 deg x 1.00 deg region with the University of Arizona Heinrich Hertz Submillimeter Telescope. We use a statistical equilibrium code to estimate physical properties of the molecular gas. We compare the molecular cloud morphology with the distribution of infrared (IR) and radio continuum sources, and find associations between molecular clouds and young stellar objects (YSOs) listed in Spitzer IR catalogs. The ratios of CO lines associated with HII regions are different from the ratios outside the active star-forming regions. We present evidence of star formation triggered by the expansion of the HII regions and by cloud-cloud collisions. We estimate that about 1% of the cloud mass is currently in YSOs.Comment: 18 pages, 29 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

    Wirelessly controlled, bioresorbable drug delivery device with active valves that exploit electrochemically triggered crevice corrosion

    Implantable drug release platforms that offer wirelessly programmable control over pharmacokinetics have potential in advanced treatment protocols for hormone imbalances, malignant cancers, diabetic conditions, and others. We present a system with this type of functionality in which the constituent materials undergo complete bioresorption to eliminate device load from the patient after completing the final stage of the release process. Here, bioresorbable polyanhydride reservoirs store drugs in defined reservoirs without leakage until wirelessly triggered valve structures open to allow release. These valves operate through an electrochemical mechanism of geometrically accelerated corrosion induced by passage of electrical current from a wireless, bioresorbable power-harvesting unit. Evaluations in cell cultures demonstrate the efficacy of this technology for the treatment of cancerous tissues by release of the drug doxorubicin. Complete in vivo studies of platforms with multiple, independently controlled release events in live-animal models illustrate capabilities for control of blood glucose levels by timed delivery of insulin
