Optical Morphology Evolution of Infrared Luminous Galaxies in GOODS-N
We combine optical morphologies and photometry from HST, redshifts from Keck,
and mid-infrared luminosities from Spitzer for an optically selected sample
of~800 galaxies in GOODS-N to track morphology evolution of infrared luminous
galaxies (LIRGs) since redshift z=1. We find a 50% decline in the number of
LIRGs from z~1 to lower redshift, in agreement with previous studies. In
addition, there is evidence for a morphological evolution of the populations of
LIRGs. Above z=0.5, roughly half of all LIRGs are spiral, the
peculiar/irregular to spiral ratio is ~0.7, and both classes span a similar
range of L_{IR} and M_B. At low-z, spirals account for one-third of LIRGs, the
peculiar to spiral fraction rises to 1.3, and for a given M_B spirals tend to
have lower IR luminosity than peculiars. Only a few percent of LIRGs at any
redshift are red early-type galaxies. For blue galaxies (U-B < 0.2), M_B is
well correlated with log(L_{IR}) with an RMS scatter (about a bivariate linear
fit) of ~0.25 dex in IR luminosity. Among blue galaxies that are brighter than
M_B = -21, 75% are LIRGs, regardless of redshift. These results can be
explained by a scenario in which at high-z, most large spirals experience an
elevated star formation rate as LIRGs. Gas consumption results in a decline of

Refined Simulations of the Reaction Front for Diffusion-Limited Two-Species Annihilation in One Dimension
Extensive simulations are performed of the diffusion-limited reaction
AB in one dimension, with initially separated reagents. The reaction
rate profile, and the probability distributions of the separation and midpoint
of the nearest-neighbour pair of A and B particles, are all shown to exhibit
dynamic scaling, independently of the presence of fluctuations in the initial
state and of an exclusion principle in the model. The data is consistent with
all lengthscales behaving as as . Evidence of
multiscaling, found by other authors, is discussed in the light of these

Anisotropic strains and magnetoresistance of La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}
Thin films of perovskite manganite La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} were grown
epitaxially on SrTiO_3(100), MgO(100) and LaAlO_3(100) substrates by the pulsed
laser deposition method. Microscopic structures of these thin film samples as
well as a bulk sample were fully determined by x-ray diffraction measurements.
The unit cells of the three films have different shapes, i.e., contracted
tetragonal, cubic, and elongated tetragonal for SrTiO_3, MgO, and LaAlO_3
cases, respectively, while the unit cell of the bulk is cubic. It is found that
the samples with cubic unit cell show smaller peak magnetoresistance than the
noncubic ones do. The present result demonstrates that the magnetoresistance of
La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3} can be controlled by lattice distortion via externally

The Luminosity Function of Field Galaxies in the CNOC1 Redshift Survey
We have computed the luminosity function for 389 field galaxies from the
Canadian Network for Observational Cosmology cluster redshift survey (CNOC1),
over redshifts z = 0.2-0.6. We find Schechter parameters M^* - 5 log h = -19.6
\pm 0.3 and \alpha = -0.9 \pm 0.2 in rest-frame B_{AB}. We have also split our
sample at the color of a redshifted but nonevolving Sbc galaxy, and find
distinctly different luminosity functions for red and blue galaxies. Red
galaxies have a shallow slope \alpha \approx -0.4 and dominate the bright end
of the luminosity function, while blue galaxies have a steep \alpha \approx
-1.4 and prevail at the faint end. Comparisons of the CNOC1 results to those
from the Canada-France (CFRS) and Autofib redshift surveys show broad agreement
among these independent samples, but there are also significant differences
which will require larger samples to resolve. Also, in CNOC1 the red galaxy
luminosity density stays about the same over the range z = 0.2-0.6, while the
blue galaxy luminosity density increases steadily with redshift. These results
are consistent with the trend of the luminosity density vs. redshift relations
seen in the CFRS, though the normalizations of the luminosity densities appear
to differ for blue galaxies. Comparison to the local luminosity function from
the Las Campanas redshift survey (LCRS) shows that the luminosity density at z
\approx 0.1 is only about half that seen at z \approx 0.4. A change in the
luminosity function shape, particularly at the faint end, appears to be
required to match the CNOC1 and LCRS luminosity functions, if galaxy evolution
is the sole cause of the differences seen. However, it should be noted that the
specific details of the construction of different surveys may complicate the

Localisation Transition of A Dynamic Reaction Front
We study the reaction-diffusion process with injection of
each species at opposite boundaries of a one-dimensional lattice and bulk
driving of each species in opposing directions with a hardcore interaction. The
system shows the novel feature of phase transitions between localised and
delocalised reaction zones as the injection rate or reaction rate is varied. An
approximate analytical form for the phase diagram is derived by relating both
the domain of reactants and the domain of reactants to asymmetric
exclusion processes with open boundaries, a system for which the phase diagram
is known exactly, giving rise to three phases. The reaction zone width is
described by a finite size scaling form relating the early time growth,
relaxation time and saturation width exponents. In each phase the exponents are
distinct from the previously studied case where the reactants diffuse

Diffusion-Limited Annihilation with Initially Separated Reactants
A diffusion-limited annihilation process, A+B->0, with species initially
separated in space is investigated. A heuristic argument suggests the form of
the reaction rate in dimensions less or equal to the upper critical dimension
. Using this reaction rate we find that the width of the reaction front
grows as in one dimension and as in two

Public Interest Analysis of the US TPP Proposal for an IP Chapter
This briefing paper provides preliminary analysis of two leaked U.S. proposals for an intellectual property chapter in the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement. The U.S. proposal, if adopted, would create the highest intellectual property protection and enforcement standards in any free trade agreement to date. Its provisions are primarily based on, and frequently go beyond, the maximalist and controversial standards of the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) and US law, while negating the development-oriented flexibilities required by the 2007 New Trade Deal for developing countries and included in the US-Peru Free Trade Agreement. If adopted, the provisions would predictably lead to higher prices and decreased access to a broad range of consumer products in many TPP member countries, from medicines to textbooks to information on the internet, with little or no benefit from increased innovation, creativity or local economic activity. No country, including the US, has an interest in ceding this much policy flexibility to an international agreement. The proposal is particularly inappropriate for developing countries where the risks and effects of exclusionary pricing by monopolists are most acute
Functional rescue of dystrophin deficiency in mice caused by frameshift mutations using Campylobacter jejuni Cas9
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a fatal, X-linked muscle wasting disease caused by mutations in the DMD gene. In 51% of DMD cases, a reading frame is disrupted because of deletion of several exons. Here, we show that CjCas9 derived from Campylobacter jejuni can be
used as a gene editing tool to correct an out-of-frame Dmd exon in Dmd knockout mice. Herein, we used Cas9 derived from S. pyogenes to generate Dmd knockout (KO) mice with a frameshift mutation in Dmd gene. Then, we expressed CjCas9, its single-guide RNA, and the eGFP gene
in the tibialis anterior muscle of the Dmd KO mice using an all-in-one adeno-associated virus (AAV) vector. CjCas9 cleaved the target site in the Dmd gene efficiently in vivo and induced small insertions or deletions at the target site. This treatment resulted in conversion of the
disrupted Dmd reading frame from out-of-frame to in-frame, leading to the expression of dystrophin in the sarcolemma. Importantly, muscle strength was enhanced in the CjCas9-treated muscles, without off-target mutations, indicating high efficiency and specificity of CjCas9. This work suggests that in vivo DMD frame correction, mediated by CjCas9 has great potential for the treatment of DMD and other neuromuscular diseases
