It's a wonderful life: Mentally subtracting positive events improves people's affective states, contrary to their affective forecasts.

The authors hypothesized that thinking about the absence of a positive event from one’s life would improve affective states more than thinking about the presence of a positive event but that people would not predict this when making affective forecasts. In Studies 1 and 2, college students wrote about the ways in which a positive event might never have happened and was surprising or how it became part of their life and was unsurprising. As predicted, people in the former condition reported more positive affective states. In Study 3, college student forecasters failed to anticipate this effect. In Study 4, Internet respondents and university staff members who wrote about how they might never have met their romantic partner were more satisfied with their relationship than were those who wrote about how they did meet their partner. The authors discuss the implications of these findings for the literatures on gratitude induction and counterfactual reasoning

Problematic Use of Alcohol and Online Gaming as Coping Strategies During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Mini Review

    Get PDF
The COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019) pandemic has dramatically changed our daily lives and activities, including those originally intended to serve for leisure and pleasure. Drinking and online gaming became coping behaviors used to rescue ourselves from the stress and restricted lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, frequent drinking and gaming can result in the pathological consequences of addiction. Those affected use the stimuli not to obtain pleasure, but rather to avoid the displeasure induced by stress and previous use, often unsuccessfully. This review aims to provide an overview of recent longitudinal cohort studies on alcohol and gaming use during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to analyze how the pandemic has affected alcohol and gaming use. There was a substantial risk of alcohol and online gaming overuse during the lockdown, which may depend on the pandemic's duration or overuse patterns. Previous studies have shown that increased alcohol consumption and online gaming are associated with heightened stress and anxiety levels caused by social isolation/quarantine. Over time, frequent or excessive alcohol consumption and gaming could lead to an increased risk of more serious mental health problems. Every effort should be made to mitigate mental health problems and ensure adequate adaptation to these exceptional circumstances. Therefore, it would be helpful to encourage physical activity, social interaction, and collaboration to facilitate psychological and physical health. © Copyright © 2021 Xu, Park, Kang, Choi and Koo.1

Event-related brain response to visual cues in individuals with Internet gaming disorder: relevance to attentional bias and decision-making

This study investigated attentional bias toward game-related cues in Internet gaming disorder (IGD) using electrophysiological markers of late positive potential (LPP) and identifying the sources of LPP. In addition, the association between LPP and decision-making ability was investigated. The IGD (n = 40) and healthy control (HC; n = 39) participants viewed a series of game-related and neutral pictures, while their event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. LPPs were calculated as the mean amplitudes between 400 and 700 ms at the centro-parietal (CP3, CP1, Cpz, CP2, and CP4) and parietal (P3, P1, Pz, P2, and P4) electrode sites. The source activations of LPP were estimated using standardized low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (sLORETA). In addition, decision-making ability was evaluated by the Cambridge Gambling Task. Higher LPP amplitudes were found for game-related cues in the IGD group than in the HC group. sLORETA showed that the IGD group was more active in the superior and middle temporal gyri, which are involved in social perception, than in the HC group, whereas it was less active in the frontal area. Individuals with IGD have deficits in decision-making ability. In addition, in the HC group, the lower the LPP when looking at the game-related stimuli, the better the quality of decision-making, but not in the IGD group. Enhanced LPP amplitudes are associated with emotional arousal to gaming cues and decision-making deficits in IGD. In addition, source activities suggest that patients with IGD perceive game-related cues as social stimuli. LPP can be used as a neurophysiological marker of IGD. © 2021, The Author(s).1

Simulation Method for the Physical Deformation of a Three-Dimensional Soft Body in Augmented Reality-Based External Ventricular Drainage

Objectives Intraoperative navigation reduces the risk of major complications and increases the likelihood of optimal surgical outcomes. This paper presents an augmented reality (AR)-based simulation technique for ventriculostomy that visualizes brain deformations caused by the movements of a surgical instrument in a three-dimensional brain model. This is achieved by utilizing a position-based dynamics (PBD) physical deformation method on a preoperative brain image. Methods An infrared camera-based AR surgical environment aligns the real-world space with a virtual space and tracks the surgical instruments. For a realistic representation and reduced simulation computation load, a hybrid geometric model is employed, which combines a high-resolution mesh model and a multiresolution tetrahedron model. Collision handling is executed when a collision between the brain and surgical instrument is detected. Constraints are used to preserve the properties of the soft body and ensure stable deformation. Results The experiment was conducted once in a phantom environment and once in an actual surgical environment. The tasks of inserting the surgical instrument into the ventricle using only the navigation information presented through the smart glasses and verifying the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid were evaluated. These tasks were successfully completed, as indicated by the drainage, and the deformation simulation speed averaged 18.78 fps. Conclusions This experiment confirmed that the AR-based method for external ventricular drain surgery was beneficial to clinicians

Single-Component-Based White Light Photoluminescence Emission via Selective Photooxidation in an Organic–Polymer Hybrid System

White light-emitting phenothiazine-poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PTZ-PDMS) composites are formed by a photooxidation reaction. The oxidized PTZ species, i.e., PTZ cation radicals and dication species, are created by electron transfer from the PTZ molecules to PDMS under UV irradiation. In situ UV-vis and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopies are carried out after UV exposure of PTZ-PDMS, and the results provide evidence for the spontaneous ionization of PTZ. The spectral changes indicate the formation of PTZ(center dot+) (radical cation) and PTZ(2+) (dication) within the PDMS matrix. Moreover, a combination of PTZ, PTZ(center dot+), and PTZ(2+), together with the PDMS matrix, show an unexpected emission of white light with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of 0.34 and 0.32, which are close to those of pure white light. These findings potentially offer a new route and strategy for the development of flexible white light-emitting materials.11Nsciescopu

Morphology-Retained Photoconversion Reaction of Anthracene Single Crystal: A New Approach for Organic Heterostructures

    No full text
Morphology-retained solid-state photoconversion of anthracene (AN) to 9,10-anthraquinone (PC-ANQ) and dipara-anthracene (PC-DPA) was accomplished by irradiating mercury lamp light to plate-shaped AN single crystal in oxygen and argon atmosphere, respectively. The photoconverted crystals retained the original plate shape morphology of the starting AN crystal, whereas the emission profile and crystal structure were significantly changed. The electrical conductivity of PC-ANQ crystal is 5 orders of magnitude greater than that of the starting AN crystal, whereas the PC-DPA crystal exhibits a decreased conductivity. The AN/PC-ANQ/PC-DPA heterostructures with smooth interface were successfully obtained by inducing the photoconversion only at the desired area.© 2018 American Chemical Societ
