Identifying Subgroups of ICU Patients Using End-to-End Multivariate Time-Series Clustering Algorithm Based on Real-World Vital Signs Data
This study employed the MIMIC-IV database as data source to investigate the
use of dynamic, high-frequency, multivariate time-series vital signs data,
including temperature, heart rate, mean blood pressure, respiratory rate, and
SpO2, monitored first 8 hours data in the ICU stay. Various clustering
algorithms were compared, and an end-to-end multivariate time series clustering
system called Time2Feat, combined with K-Means, was chosen as the most
effective method to cluster patients in the ICU. In clustering analysis, data
of 8,080 patients admitted between 2008 and 2016 was used for model development
and 2,038 patients admitted between 2017 and 2019 for model validation. By
analyzing the differences in clinical mortality prognosis among different
categories, varying risks of ICU mortality and hospital mortality were found
between different subgroups. Furthermore, the study visualized the trajectory
of vital signs changes. The findings of this study provide valuable insights
into the potential use of multivariate time-series clustering systems in
patient management and monitoring in the ICU setting.Comment: Proceedings of Beijing Health Data Science Summit (HDSS) 202
Materials design towards sport textiles with low-friction and moisture-wicking dual functions
In the field of sportswear, the structure and morphology of textiles are of great importance to achieve good moisture transport and low friction, which are two critical comfort-related properties. To improve these properties, dual-layer nanofibrous nonwoven mats were studied in this work. Core–shell nanofibers with a polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-rich core and a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-rich shell were fabricated by single-spinneret electrospinning and used as the inner layer of the dual-layer mats, while thick base-treated Cellulose Acetate (CA) nanofibrous mats were used as the outer layer. The core-located PAN and a small amount of PAN on the PAN/PVDF nanofiber surface ensure good moisture transport through the nanofibrous mats. The synergistic combination of a considerably hydrophobic PAN/PVDF inner layer and a highly hydrophilic CA outer layer induces a strong push–pull effect, resulting in efficient moisture transport from the inner to the outer layer. Furthermore, the fluorine-rich PVDF shell of the inner layer touches the human skin and provides a lubricating effect to enhance comfortability. This design provides a promising route for sports textiles with both good moisture-wicking and low friction
Tailoring surface hydrophilicity of porous electrospun nanofibers to enhance capillary and push-pull effects for moisture wicking
In this article, liquid moisture transport behaviors of dual-layer electrospun nanofibrous mats are reported for the first time. The dual-layer mats consist of a thick layer of hydrophilic polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers with a thin layer of hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) nanofibers with and without interpenetrating nanopores, respectively. The mats are coated with polydopamine (PDOPA) to different extents to tailor the water wettability of the PS layer. It is found that with a large quantity of nanochannels, the porous PS nanofibers exhibit a stronger capillary effect than the solid PS nanofibers. The capillary motion in the porous PS nanofibers can be further enhanced by slight surface modification with PDOPA while retaining the large hydrophobicity difference between the two layers, inducing a strong push–pull effect to transport water from the PS to the PAN layer

East Asian hydroclimate modulated by the position of the westerlies during Termination I.
Speleothem oxygen isotope records have revolutionized our understanding of the paleo East Asian monsoon, yet there is fundamental disagreement on what they represent in terms of the hydroclimate changes. We report a multiproxy speleothem record of monsoon evolution during the last deglaciation from the middle Yangtze region, which indicates a wetter central eastern China during North Atlantic cooling episodes, despite the oxygen isotopic record suggesting a weaker monsoon. We show that this apparent contradiction can be resolved if the changes are interpreted as a lengthening of the Meiyu rains and shortened post-Meiyu stage, in accordance with a recent hypothesis. Model simulations support this interpretation and further reveal the role of the westerlies in communicating the North Atlantic influence to the East Asian climate
Cross-session Emotion Recognition by Joint Label-common and Label-specific EEG Features Exploration
Since Electroencephalogram (EEG) is resistant to camouflage, it has been a reliable data source for objective emotion recognition. EEG is naturally multi-rhythm and multi-channel, based on which we can extract multiple features for further processing. In EEG-based emotion recognition, it is important to investigate whether there exist some common features shared by different emotional states, and the specific features associated with each emotional state. However, such fundamental problem is ignored by most of the existing studies. To this end, we propose a Joint label-Common and label-Specific Features Exploration (JCSFE) model for semi-supervised cross-session EEG emotion recognition in this paper. To be specific, JCSFE imposes the â„“ 2,1 -norm on the projection matrix to explore the label-common EEG features and simultaneously the â„“ 1 -norm is used to explore the label-specific EEG features. Besides, a graph regularization term is introduced to enforce the data local invariance property, i.e ., similar EEG samples are encouraged to have the same emotional state. Results obtained from the SEED-IV and SEED-V emotional data sets experimentally demonstrate that JCSFE not only achieves superior emotion recognition performance in comparison with the state-of-the-art models but also provides us with a quantitative method to identify the label-common and label-specific EEG features in emotion recognition
Attention allocation on mobile app interfaces when human interacts with them
With the popularity of smartphones and the pervasion of mobile apps, people spend more and more time to interact with a diversity of apps on their smartphones, especially for young population. This raises a question: how people allocate attention to interfaces of apps during using them. To address this question, we, in this study, designed an experiment with two sessions (i.e., Session1: browsing original interfaces; Session 2: browsing interfaces after removal of colors and background) integrating with an eyetracking system. Attention fixation durations were recorded by an eye-tracker while participants browsed app interfaces. The whole screen of smartphone was divided into four even regions to explore fixation durations. The results revealed that participants gave significantly longer total fixation duration on the bottom left region compared to other regions in the session (1) Longer total fixation duration on the bottom was preserved, but there is no significant difference between left side and right side in the session2. Similar to the finding of total fixation duration, first fixation duration is also predominantly paid on the bottom area of the interface. Moreover, the skill in the use of mobile phone was quantified by assessing familiarity and accuracy of phone operation and was investigated in the association with the fixation durations. We found that first fixation duration of the bottom left region is significantly negatively correlated with the smartphone operation level in the session 1, but there is no significant correlation between them in the session (2) According to the results of ratio exploration, the ratio of the first fixation duration to the total fixation duration is not significantly different between areas of interest for both sessions. The findings of this study provide insights into the attention allocation during browsing app interfaces and are of implications on the design of app interfaces and advertisements as layout can be optimized according to the attention allocation to maximally deliver information
Transcriptome Remodeling in Response to Leaf Removal and Exogenous Abscisic Acid in Berries of Grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) Fruit Cuttings
Climate change is known to simultaneously increase berry sugars but decrease anthocyanins, leading to an imbalance between sugars and anthocyanins in grape berries. To restore the balance of sugars and anthocyanins, carbon limitation by leaf removal and exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) were separately or simultaneously applied to Vitis vinifera cv. Cabernet Sauvignon fruit cuttings to decipher their effects on berry quality with metabolite and whole-genome transcriptome analyses. Carbon limitation decreased the hexose concentration and fully blocked the accumulation of anthocyanins. However, exogenous ABA increased the anthocyanin concentration under both carbon limitation and sufficient conditions. Carbon limitation and exogenous ABA induced the profound remodeling of the whole-genome transcriptome and altered the anthocyanin concentration by regulating the transcription levels of genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathways as well as in the genes involved in various types of hormone signaling. Moreover, two pertinent candidate genes were identified based on the co-expression network analysis between the berry metabolite and transcriptome results, including a transcriptional factor, ERF2, and a calcineurin B-like proteininteracting protein kinase gene, CIPK25. In summary, simultaneously modifying the carbon supply by leaf removal and spraying exogenous ABA could re-establish the balance between sugars and anthocyanins to improve the qualities of grape berries via whole-genome transcriptome remodeling
Metabolite analysis reveals distinct spatio-temporal accumulation of anthocyanins in two teinturier variants of cv. ‘Gamay’ grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.)
In most red grape cultivars, anthocyanins accumulate exclusively in the berry skin, while ‘teinturier’ cultivars also accumulate anthocyanins in the pulp. Here, we investigated the teinturier cvs. ‘Gamay de Bouze’ and ‘Gamay Fréaux’ (two somatic variants of the white-fleshed cv. ‘Gamay’) through metabolic and transcript analysis to clarify whether these two somatic variants have the same anthocyanin accumulation pattern in the skin and pulp, and whether primary metabolites are also affected. The skin of the three cultivars and the pulp of ‘Gamay de Bouze’ begun to accumulate anthocyanins at the onset of berry ripening. However, the pulp of ‘Gamay Fréaux’ exhibited a distinct anthocyanin accumulation pattern, starting as early as fruit set with very low level of sugars. The highest level of anthocyanins was found in ‘Gamay Fréaux’ skin, followed by ‘Gamay de Bouze’ and ‘Gamay’. Consistently, the transcript abundance of genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis were in line with the anthocyanin levels in the three cultivars. Despite no evident differences in pulp sugar content, the concentration of glucose and fructose in the skin of ‘Gamay Fréaux’ was only half of those in the skin of ‘Gamay’ and ‘Gamay de Bouze’ throughout all berry ripening, suggesting an uncoupled accumulation of sugars and anthocyanins in ‘Gamay Fréaux’. The study provides a comprehensive view of metabolic consequences in grape somatic variants and the three almost isogenic genotypes can serve as ideal reagents to further uncover the mechanisms underlying the linkage between sugar and anthocyanin accumulation. This research was supported partly by the National Key R&D Program of China (2018YFD1000200) and was

A DEMETER-like DNA demethylase protein governs tomato fruit ripening
In plants, genomic DNA methylation which contributes to development and stress responses can be actively removed by DEMETER-like DNA demethylases (DML). Indeed, in Arabidopsis DMLs are important for maternal imprinting and endosperm demethylation, but only few studies demonstrate the developmental roles of active DNA demethylation conclusively in this plant. Here we show a direct cause and effect relationship between active DNA demethylation mainly mediated by the tomato DML, SlDML2, and fruit ripening; an important developmental process unique to plants. RNAi SlDML2 knock-down results in ripening inhibition via hypermethylation and repression of the expression of genes encoding ripening transcription factors and rate-limiting enzymes of key biochemical processes such as carotenoid synthesis. Our data demonstrate that active DNA demethylation is central to the control of ripening in tomat
Zebularine, a DNA Methylation Inhibitor, Activates Anthocyanin Accumulation in Grapevine Cells
Through its role in the regulation of gene expression, DNA methylation can participate in the control of specialized metabolite production. We have investigated the link between DNA methylation and anthocyanin accumulation in grapevine using the hypomethylating drug, zebularine and Gamay Teinturier cell suspensions. In this model, zebularine increased anthocyanin accumulation in the light, and induced its production in the dark. To unravel the underlying mechanisms, cell transcriptome, metabolic content, and DNA methylation were analyzed. The up-regulation of stress-related genes, as well as a decrease in cell viability, revealed that zebularine affected cell integrity. Concomitantly, the global DNA methylation level was only slightly decreased in the light and not modified in the dark. However, locus-specific analyses demonstrated a decrease in DNA methylation at a few selected loci, including a CACTA DNA transposon and a small region upstream from the UFGT gene, coding for the UDP glucose:flavonoid-3-O-glucosyltransferase, known to be critical for anthocyanin biosynthesis. Moreover, this decrease was correlated with an increase in UFGT expression and in anthocyanin content. In conclusion, our data suggest that UFGT expression could be regulated through DNA methylation in Gamay Teinturier, although the functional link between changes in DNA methylation and UFGT transcription still needs to be demonstrated
