    Meteorin regulates mesendoderm development by enhancing nodal expression

    During gastrulation, distinct lineage specification into three germ layers, the mesoderm, endoderm and ectoderm, occurs through an elaborate harmony between signaling molecules along the embryonic proximo-distal and anterior-posterior axes, and Nodal signaling plays a key role in the early embryonic development governing embryonic axis formation, mesoderm and endoderm specification, and left-right asymmetry determination. However, the mechanism by which Nodal expression is regulated is largely unknown. Here, we show that Meteorin regulates Nodal expression and is required for mesendoderm development. It is highly expressed in the inner cell mass of blastocysts and further in the epiblast and extra-embryonic ectoderm during gastrulation. Genetic ablation of the Meteorin gene resulted in early embryonic lethality, presumably due to impaired lineage allocation and subsequent cell accumulation. Embryoid body culture using Meteorin-null embryonic stem (ES) cells showed reduced Nodal expression and concomitant impairment of mesendoderm specification. Meteorin-null embryos displayed reduced levels of Nodal transcripts before the gastrulation stage, and impaired expression of Goosecoid, a definitive endoderm marker, during gastrulation, while the proximo-distal and anterior-posterior axes and primitive streak formation were preserved. Our results show that Meteorin is a novel regulator of Nodal transcription and is required to maintain sufficient Nodal levels for endoderm formation, thereby providing new insights in the regulation of mesendoderm allocation.open1113sciescopu

    In construction of roads or large residential complexes, the formation of large scale cut slopes is inevitable due to the large proportion of mountains in Korea. The problems involving the slope stability has emerged as a major concern. Inaccurate subsurface exploration can result in slope failure during or after the construction, thereby increasing the construction cost and delaying the construction duration. This study reviews problems involving the cut slope survey methods, design criteria, and examining the collapse mechanisms through various case studies. This study suggests the optimum survey methods and design criteria based on the possible failure mechanisms

    Cancer Statistics in Korea: Incidence, Mortality, Survival, and Prevalence in 2008

    PURPOSE: This paper overviews the nationwide cancer statistics including incidence, mortality, survival and prevalence, and their trends in Korea based on the year 2008 cancer incidence data. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Incidence data from 1993 to 2008 were obtained from the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database, and the vital status was followed through December 31, 2009. Mortality data from 1983 to 2008 were obtained from the Korea National Statistics Office. Crude rates and age-standardized rates for incidence, mortality, prevalence and relative survival were calculated. RESULTS: There were 178,816 cancer cases and 68,912 cancer deaths observed during year 2008 and 724,663 10-year cancer prevalent cases as of January 1, 2009 in Korea. The incidence rate for all cancer combined showed an annual increase of 3.1% from 1999 to 2008. CONCLUSION: With significantly increasing cancer incidence, Korea faces a large cancer burden and efficient cancer control programs are essential.ope

    EFFECTS OF SPECIFIC MUSCLE IMBALANCE IMPROVEMENT TRAINING ON THE BALANCE ABILITY IN ELITE FENCERS

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of specific muscle imbalance improvement training (SMIIT) on the balance ability. Subjects were 9 male national team fencers with 28.2±2.2 yrs, 182.3±4.0 cm, and 76.5±8.2 kg. The SMIIT included flexibility training, Pilates, muscle balance training and was conducted for 12 weeks with 4 times per week. As a result, there was no significant difference in COM dispersion among static balance maintaining abilities, but reduction in the COP dispersion was shown. In conclusion, SMIIT seemed to affect in improving dynamic balance maintaining abilities especially in non-dominant leg

    EFFECTS OF LEISURE SPORTS PARTICIPATION PERIOD ON BALANCE AND THE LOWER EXTREMITY ASYMMETRY

    The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of the sports participation on balance measurements and lower extremity symmetry. Eighty healthy middle-aged adults (male 35, women 45) were participated in this study. COP related variables were selected for both double and single leg standing as center of pressure anterior posterior (COP-AP) and medial lateral (COP-ML) displacement, center of pressure mean velocity (COP-MV), center of pressure area (COP-Area), and the symmetry index (SI) of dominant and non-dominant leg. Only the COP-MV showed statistically difference for both double and single leg standing test. However, no significant differences were observed for single leg standing asymmetries. As a result, long term sports participation has positive effects on balance which can be helpful to prevent falls in middle-aged adults

    Prediction of Cancer Incidence and Mortality in Korea, 2011

    PURPOSE: To estimate the current cancer burden in Korea, cancer incidence and mortality were projected for the year 2011. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The cancer incidence data from 1999-2008 were obtained from the Korea National Cancer Incidence Database, and the cancer mortality data from 1993-2009 were obtained from the Korea National Statistics Office. Cancer incident cases and rates in 2011 were projected from fitting a linear regression model on observed age-specific cancer incidence rates against observed years, then multiplying the projected age-specific rates by the age-specific population. For cancer mortality, a similar procedure was applied for projection except that a Joinpoint regression model was used to determine at which year the linear trend significantly changed. RESULTS: A total of 216,809 new cancer cases and 71,036 cancer deaths are projected to occur in Korea in 2011. For all sites combined, the crude incidence rates are projected to be 437.9 and 420.5 and the age-standardized incidence rates are projected to be 336.5 and 279.7 per 100,000 for men and women, respectively. CONCLUSION: Cancer has become an important public health concern in Korea, and as Korea becomes an aged society, the cancer burden will continue to increase.ope

    Leisure sedentary time is differentially associated with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia depending on occupation

    Abstract Background Sedentary behavior is considered an independent cause of cardio-metabolic diseases, regardless of physical activity level and obesity. Few studies have reported the association between leisure sedentary time and cardio-vascular diseases in terms of occupation. Methods We performed a cross-sectional study using data from the Korean Community Health Survey (KCHS) for 240,086 participants assessed in 2011 and 2013. Occupation was categorized into four groups: farmer or fisherman, laborer, and soldier (Group I); service worker, salesperson, technician, mechanic, production worker, and engineer (Group II); manager, expert, specialist, and clerk (Group III); and unemployed (Group IV). Leisure sedentary time was divided into five groups: 0 h, 1 h, 2 h, 3 h, and 4+ h. The association between leisure sedentary time on weekdays and hypertension/diabetes mellitus/hyperlipidemia for different occupations was analyzed using simple and multiple logistic regression analyses with complex sampling. Results In Groups I, II and III, no length of sedentary time was associated with hypertension, and only 3 h or 4+ h of sedentary time was associated with diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia. Group IV showed a significant association with hypertension and diabetes mellitus for the 2 h, 3 h, and 4+ h sedentary times. Conclusions The unemployed are more susceptible than other occupation groups to cardio-metabolic diseases when leisure time is sedentary

    Isolation and characterization of differentially expressed genes in the mycelium and fruit body of Pleurotus ostreatus

    The fruiting body of one of the most widely cultivated mushrooms, the oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) is highly interesting, both commercially and scientifically. In the present study, we performed comparative proteomic profiling of P. ostreatus at two unique developmental stages; mycelium and fruit body, using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE). Seven hundred fourteen (714) spots were detected and 29 spots (showing a high level of difference in their expressions) were identified by tandem mass spectrometry and basic local alignment search tool (BLAST) searching of an expressed sequence tag (EST) database of P. ostreatus. Among them, six proteins (putative fatty acid oxygenase, heat shock sks2, PriA homologue, Ap-1 like transcription factor YAP7, mung bean seed albumin, and C2H2 Zinc finger domain protein) and one protein (peroxisomal biogenesis factor 6) showed increased expression levels at the fruiting process and the mycelial stage, respectively. Through reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction analysis, priA homologue and AP-1 like transcription factor yap7 showed gradually increased expression from mycelia to fruit body, whereas putative fatty acid oxygenase and heat shock protein sks2 were expressed only in the fruit body.     Glacial history and depositional environments in little Storfjorden and Hambergbukta of Arctic Svalbard since the younger dryas

    Geophysical and lithological data provide crucial information for the understanding of glacial history in Arctic Svalbard. In this study, we reconstructed the glacier-induced depositional environments of Little Storfjorden and its tributary, Hambergbukta, over the last 13 ka to better understand the glacial history of southeastern Svalbard. The combined uses of swath-bathymetry, high-resolution seismic stratigraphy, and multiple-proxy measurements of sediment cores allowed us to define five steps of glacier-induced depositional environments: 1) deposition of massive, semi-consolidated gravelly sandy mud (Facies 1) during re-advance or still-stand of the marine-based glaciers/ice streams in Little Storfjorden during Younger Dryas (13–12 ka); 2) deposition of massive mud to gravelly sandy mud (Facies 2A and B) during glacial retreat until the earliest Holocene (12–10.1 ka); 3) sediment winnowing by enhanced bottom currents during the early to middle Holocene (10.1–3.7 ka); 4) deposition of bioturbated sandy mud (Facies 3) with high productivity under seasonal sea ice conditions during the late Holocene (3.7–0.7 ka); and 5) deposition of (slightly) bioturbated sandy to gravelly mud (Facies 4) affected by glacier surges since Little Ice Age (LIA) (Facies 4). In addition to seismic stratigraphy, depositional patterns of IRD in Little Storfjorden indicate that the glacier surges in Hambergbukta occurred only after ∼0.7 ka. This suggests that the terminal moraine complex (TMC) represents the maximum extent of the LIA surges, which argues against the recent inference for the TMC formation during pre-LIA. This study shows the importance of multiple parameters to better understand the current behavior of tidewater glaciers in the Svalbard fjords in response to rapid climate change
