Intercultural sensitivity scale: Proposal for a modified Serbian version
Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) is the main assessment tool for measuring intercultural sensitivity as an affective component of intercultural communication competence. The ISS has been developed based on an American sample and therefore there is a need to check possibilities for its application in another cultural context. In this study, we tested whether the factor structure of the original scale is confirmed in a Serbian sample as well. The results show that the compatibility of factor structure is not satisfactory (x2/df = 3.38; CFI = .78; RMSEA = .07) and the application of the scale requires modification. A proposal for a modified version of the ISS is presented together with evidence for its usage. The main advantages of the modified version are: (a) a corresponding factor structure, (b) higher internal consistency and (c) better prediction of relevant criteria
No Impact of Functional Connectivity of the Motor System on the Resting Motor Threshold: A Replication Study
The physiological mechanisms of corticospinal excitability and factors influencing its measurement with transcranial magnetic stimulation are still poorly understood. A recent study reported an impact of functional connectivity (FC) between the primary motor cortex (M1) and the dorsal premotor cortex (PMd) on the resting motor threshold (RMT) of the dominant hemisphere. We aimed to replicate these findings in a larger sample of 38 healthy right-handed subjects with data from both hemispheres. Resting-state FC was assessed between the M1 and five a priori defined motor-relevant regions on each hemisphere as well as interhemispherically between both primary motor cortices. Following the procedure by the original authors, we included age, cortical gray matter volume, and coil-to-cortex distance (CCD) as further predictors in the analysis. We report replication models for the dominant hemisphere as well as an extension to data from both hemispheres and support the results with Bayes factors. FC between the M1 and the PMd did not explain the variability in the RMT, and we obtained moderate evidence for the absence of this effect. In contrast, CCD could be confirmed as an important predictor with strong evidence. These findings contradict the previously proposed effect, thus questioning the notion of the PMd playing a major role in modifying corticospinal excitability
Validation of the cultural intelligence scale on a Serbian sample
This study deals with determining reliability, factorial validity, and convergent-discriminant validity of the Cultural Intelligence Scale (CQS) and its subscales on a sample of university students in Serbia (N = 336). The convergent-discriminant validity of the scale and its four subscales are verified by testing the relationship with measures of social and emotional intelligence (Social Skills Inventory), personality (Big Five), and self-assessment of inter-cultural experience. The study results reveal high reliability of the scale and its subscales (.79 lt = alpha lt = .90), and confirm the four-factor structure of the CQS in accordance with the theoretical model that lies in its basis. In addition, the relationships of cultural intelligence measures and measures of other constructs are in line with the expectations. The correlations with measures of social and emotional intelligence are mostly statistically significant, ranging from low to moderate. Deviations from this pattern of correlations are explained by certain characteristics of the Social Skills Inventory, which imply the nature of the components of cultural intelligence at the same time. The CQS and its subscales reach the strongest correlation with Openness (.24 lt = .r lt = .41), compared to other basic dimensions of personality, but not to an extent that would suggest that they are indicators of the same construct. The correlations of the CQS and its subscales with the measures of intercultural experience are positive and mostly statistically significant. The results, in general, support the implementation of the CQS for assessment of individual differences in the intercultural interaction in the Serbian population
Assessing maladaptive cognitions related to online gaming: Proposing an adaptation of online cognitions scale
In light of the recent research indicating differences between Internet addiction and online gaming addiction, in this study, we propose an adaptation of Online Cognitions Scale (OCS) developed by Davis, Flett, and Besser (2002), with the purpose of assessing maladaptive cognitions specifically related to online gaming. The aim was to determine the psychometric properties of the modified version of OCS. Unlike other instruments measuring online gaming addiction, the focus of this scale is the cognitive aspect of online gaming, instead of the behavioural one. We administered the modified scale to adolescent and young adult online game players from Serbia (N = 254). In order to determine the concurrent validity, we administered a previously established measure of online gaming addiction and a measure of a wide range of psychopathological symptoms. The modified scale was shown to be highly reliable. Exploratory factor analysis yielded six factors, unlike the original four factor structure, which were labelled as Diminished Impulse Control, Distraction, Immersion/Escapism, Social Comfort, General Sense of Comfort, and Online Games Appreciation. As expected, the modified OCS correlated highly with the measures of online gaming addiction and psychopathology. The findings suggest potential applicability of this instrument in domains of research, clinical assessment, therapy and treatment evaluation
