The Physics of ALICE HLT Trigger Modes
We discuss different physics cases, mainly of the ALICE TPC, such as pile-up,
jets in pp and PbPb, Bottonium and Charmonium spectroscopy, and there
corresponding demands on the ALICE High Level Trigger (HLT) System. We show
that compression and filter strategies can reduce the data volume by factors of
5 to 10. By reconstructing (sub)events with the HLT, background events can be
rejected with a factor of up to 100 while keeping the signal (low cross-section
probes). Altogether the HLT improves the discussed physics capabilities of
ALICE by a factor of 5-100 in terms of statistics.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure
Hadronic Freeze-Out in A+A Collisions meets the Lattice QCD Parton-Hadron Transition Line
We analyze hadrochemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS
and LHC energies. Employing the UrQMD hybrid transport model we study the
effects of the final hadron/resonance expansion phase on the hadron
multiplicities established at hadronization. The bulk meson yields freeze out
directly at hadronization whereas the baryon-antibaryon sector is subject to
significant alterations, due to annihilation and regeneration processes. We
quantify the latter changes by survival factors for each species which are
applied to modify the statistical model predictions for the data. The modified
SM analysis recovers the hadronization points, which coincide with the recent
lattice QCD predictions of the parton-hadron transition line at finite

Validity of the Hadronic Freeze-Out Curve
We analyze hadro-chemical freeze-out in central Pb+Pb collisions at CERN SPS
energies, employing the hybrid version of UrQMD which models hadronization by
the Cooper-Frye mechanism, and matches to a final hadron-resonance cascade. We
fit the results both before and after the cascade stage using the Statistical
Hadronization Model, to assess the effect of the cascade phase. We observe a
strong effect on antibaryon yields except anti-{\Omega}, resulting in a shift
in T and {\mu}_B. We discuss the implications for the freeze-out curve.Comment: 5 pages, 8 figures. To appear in the proceedings of Quark Matter

Energy dependence of kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions
Recent results from the NA49 experiment on the energy dependence of charged
kaon production in central Pb+Pb collisions are presented. First results from
the new data at 80 AGeV beam energy are compared with those from lower and
higher energies. A difference in the energy dependence of the /
and / ratios is observed. The / ratio shows a
non-monotonic behaviour with a maximum near 40 AGeV.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures, proceedings of talk at SQM2001, Frankfurt,

Strange Particle Production in p+p, p+Pb and Pb+Pb Interactions from NA49
Recent NA49 results on Lambda, Antilambda, Xi- and Antixi+ production in
minimum bias p+p and centrality selected p+Pb collisions at 158 GeV/c, and the
results on Lambda, Antilambda, K+ and K- production in central Pb+Pb collisions
at 40, 80 and 158 A GeV are discussed and compared with other available data.
By comparing the energy dependence of Lambda and Antilambda production at
mid-rapidity a striking similarity is observed between p+p and A+A data. This
is also seen in the energy dependence of the Lambda/pi ratio. K+/pi at
mid-rapidity is affected in a similar way, due to the associated production of
K+ together with Lambda particles. The observed yields increase faster than the
number of wounded nucleons when comparing p+Pb to p+p. As already observed in
A+A collisions, the increase is larger for multistrange than for strange

Violation of energy-per-hadron scaling in a resonance matter
Yields of hadrons, their average masses and energies per hadron at the stage
of chemical freeze-out in (ultra)relativistic heavy-ion collisions are analyzed
within the statistical model. The violation of the scaling / = 1 GeV
observed in Au+Au collisions at = 130 AGeV is linked to the
formation of resonance-rich matter with a considerable fraction of baryons and
antibaryons. The rise of the energy-per-hadron ratio in baryon-dominated matter
is discussed. A violation of the scaling condition is predicted for a very
central zone of heavy-ion collisions at energies around 40 AGeV.Comment: 5 pages incl. 3 figures and 2 tables, to be published in Phys. Rev.
Energy dependence of kaon-to-proton ratio fluctuations in central Pb+Pb collisions from = 6.3 to 17.3 GeV
Kaons and protons carry large parts of two conserved quantities, strangeness
and baryon number. It is argued that their correlation and thus also
fluctuations are sensitive to conditions prevailing at the anticipated
parton-hadron phase boundary. Fluctuations of the and
ratios have been measured for the first time by NA49 in central Pb+Pb
collisions at 5 SPS energies between = 6.3 GeV and 17.3 GeV.
Both ratios exhibit a change of sign in , a measure of
non-statistical fluctuations, around = 8 GeV. Below this
energy, is positive, indicating higher fluctuation
compared to a mixed event background sample, while for higher energies,
is negative, indicating correlated emission of kaons
and protons. The results are compared to UrQMD calculations which which give a
good description at the higher SPS energies, but fail to reproduce the
transition to positive values.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
System-size and centrality dependence of charged kaon and pion production in nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and158A GeV beam energy
Measurements of charged pion and kaon production are presented in centrality
selected Pb+Pb collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy as well as in
semi-central C+C and Si+Si interactions at 40A GeV. Transverse mass spectra,
rapidity spectra and total yields are determined as a function of centrality.
The system-size and centrality dependence of relative strangeness production in
nucleus-nucleus collisions at 40A GeV and 158A GeV beam energy are derived from
the data presented here and published data for C+C and Si+Si collisions at 158A
GeV beam energy. At both energies a steep increase with centrality is observed
for small systems followed by a weak rise or even saturation for higher
centralities. This behavior is compared to calculations using transport models

Event-by-event fluctuations of the kaon to pion ratio in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per Nucleon
We present the first measurement of fluctuations from event to event in the
production of strange particles in collisions of heavy nuclei. The ratio of
charged kaons to charged pions is determined for individual central Pb+Pb
collisions. After accounting for the fluctuations due to detector resolution
and finite number statistics we derive an upper limit on genuine
non-statistical fluctuations, perhaps related to a first or second order QCD
phase transition. Such fluctuations are shown to be very small.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
