Does the Open Access Business Model Have a Significant Impact on the Citation of Publications? Case Study in the Field of Civil Engineering

    Get PDF
One of the possible benefits of open access (OA) might be the better visibility of articles, which is usually measured by the number of citations of the article. In order to\ud realistically estimate the effect of OA on citation, it is not enough to compare OA and non-OA ISI journals. Thus, as Harnad and Brody (2004) suggested, the numbers of citations\ud of OA and non-OA articles from the same journals were compared. Therefore, we have chosen to analyze the publications in three international journals in the field\ud of civil engineering. All of them have an ISI impact factor in the Civil engineering subject category in the ISI/Web of science database (WOS). The articles were classified\ud into two groups − the OA publications and the non-OA publications. We analyzed all the articles published in the same year and the number of their citations until the end of February 2012, seeking to find out if these two groups differ from each other

Scientific communication in technics consists primarily of articles in peer-reviewed scholarly journals. In our research of 2026 articles, published in JCR journals in the field of civil engineering in 2007, we found out that 21% of them are published as open accessed articles, most of them as articles archived in institutional repositories. They reached 29% of all citations in the analysed period. In accordance with these findings, in 2011 the repository at the University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering was built in open source tool ePrints. 1400 theses as well as 200 research articles have been archived in it till January 2013. The library was one of the most important stakeholders in its building as it is still today. Each of the repository unit is linked into Slovenian bibliographical information system COBISS and its cataloguing part COBIB as well as the part of high valuated research works of Slovenian researchers SICRIS. The statistics (150.000 visits from all over the world in one year) is a motivation for us to develop it further. In the near future the connection to the Slovenian Digital Library (dLib.si) shall be established, which will ensure the preservation of metadata

To improve the international recognition of Geodetski vestnik, the leading Slovenian scientific and professional journal in geodesy, land surveying and geoinformatics, the editorial board took many actions, such as open access to full-text papers at the journals website since 2000 onwards. Indexation in many information systems and databases like Cobiss.si, DOAJ, WoS, DRUGG and CrossRef has increased the visibility of the journal and its articles at both national and international levels. Upon establishing the digital repository DRUGG at the Faculty of Civil and Geodetic Engineering, University of Ljubljana, this journal was the first to take the opportunity to archive its articles as open access articles in the repository. The statistics of articles downloads convinces all the participiants that the archiving in the repository influenced good on journals visibility and citation. The Geodetski vestniks citation in the period 2009-2013 is analysed in this article. Data were collected in the WoS database. The aim of the study is to encourage all authors to archive their articles in the DRUGG repository. By doing this, they increase the visibility of theirs articles and the journal Geodetski vestnik and increase the possibilities to citation. At the same time, by archiving their articles in the DRUGG repository, they will fulfil obligations to the European Commission as one of the important funding providers for scientific research

A Proposition for Geodetic Recording of Active Fault Zones

    Get PDF
Establishing recent displacements along faults is an important and delicate task. Larger\ud faults are accompanied by broader fault zones that require a specific approach to geodetic\ud measurements of fault block displacements. The vector of fault block displacements, or\ud resultant, is a vector sum of differential displacements within the fault zone. For the purposes\ud of recording the displacements we propose the stabilization of a geodetic network of\ud points positioned in fault blocks outside the fault zone, whereby the displacements would\ud be manifested in the deformation of the network. The resultant displacement vector can\ud then be derived from the latter deformation, and from that, the dip and strike of the fault\ud zone as well as the extent of the displacement

Open access is a well-established way of publishing\ud research results. There are many studies investigating\ud the influence of open access on visibility of articles and\ud citation counts. In this study, an overview and analysis\ud of bibliometric studies analysing the extent and speed\ud of citation were prepared, with special emphasis on the\ud impact of open access, separately for certain scientific\ud disciplines. We also highlight other factors that mainly\ud affect the increased visibility and, consequently, the\ud increase of the total citation count. We found that\ud in the future it will be necessary to standardize the\ud methodology of studying the effects of open access on\ud citations, before the hypothesis of a positive correlation\ud between the number of citations and open access can\ud be fully confirmed or refuted

Charge conservation breaking within generalized master equation description of electronic transport through dissipative double quantum dots

We report an observation of charge conservation breaking in a model study of electronic current noise of transport through a dissipative double quantum dot within generalized master equation formalism. We study the current noise through a double quantum dot coupled to two electronic leads in the high bias limit and a dissipative heat bath in the weak coupling limit. Our calculations are based on the solution of a Markovian generalized master equation. Zero-frequency component of the current noise calculated within the system, i.e., between the two dots, via the quantum regression theorem exhibits unphysical negative values. On the other hand, current noise calculated for currents between the dots and the leads by the counting variable approach shows no anomalies and seems physically plausible. We inquire into the origin of this discrepancy between two nominally equivalent approaches and show that it stems from the simultaneous presence of the two types of baths, i.e., the electronic leads and the dissipative bosonic bath. This finding raises interesting questions concerning conceptual foundations of the theory describing multiple-baths open quantum systems widely encountered in nanoscience.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures; submitted to Physica E as proceedings of FQMT0
