    The nature of the products of the action of pancreatic desoxyribonuclease (DNase) upon highly polymerized desoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) has been the subject of numerous investigations. Titrimetric studies (1-5) have revealed that, during the digestion, approximately one secondary phosphate group becomes titratable per 4 phosphorus atoms, which may be interpreted to mean that the products are, on the average, of the magnitude of tetranucleotides. More recently, ionophoretic (9), diffusion (5), and dialysis (10, 11) studies of the digest have suggested that it contains a complex mixture of polynucleotides of a range of magnitudes

    The Inner Rings of Beta Pictoris

    We present Keck images of the dust disk around Beta Pictoris at 17.9 microns that reveal new structure in its morphology. Within 1" (19 AU) of the star, the long axis of the dust emission is rotated by more than 10 degrees with respect to that of the overall disk. This angular offset is more pronounced than the warp detected at 3.5" by HST, and in the opposite direction. By contrast, the long axis of the emission contours at ~ 1.5" from the star is aligned with the HST warp. Emission peaks between 1.5" and 4" from the star hint at the presence of rings similar to those observed in the outer disk at ~ 25" with HST/STIS. A deconvolved image strongly suggests that the newly detected features arise from a system of four non-coplanar rings. Bayesian estimates based on the primary image lead to ring radii of 14+/-1 AU, 28+/-3 AU, 52+/-2 AU and 82+/-2 AU, with orbital inclinations that alternate in orientation relative to the overall disk and decrease in magnitude with increasing radius.     H_2 Emission From Disks Around Herbig Ae and T Tauri Stars

    We present the initial results of a deep ISO-SWS survey for the low J pure rotational emission lines of H2 toward a number of Herbig Ae and T Tauri stars. The objects are selected to be as isolated as possible from molecular clouds, with a spectral energy distribution characteristic of a circumstellar disk. For most of them the presence of a disk has been established directly by millimeter interferometry. The S (1) line is detected in most sources with a peak flux of 0.3-1 Jy. The S(0) line is definitely seen in 2 objects: GG Tau and HD 163296. The observations suggest the presence of "warm" gas at T_(kin) ≈ 100 K with a mass of a few % of the total gas+ dust mass, derived assuming a gas-to-dust ratio of 100:1. The S(1) peak flux does not show a strong correlation with spectral type of the central star or continuum flux at 1.3 millimeter. Possible origins for the warm gas seen in H_2 are discussed, and comparisons with model calculations are made

    We present maps of over 1.5 square degrees in Chamaeleon (Cha) II at 24, 70, and 160 micron observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope Multiband Imaging Photometer for Spitzer (MIPS) and a 1.2 square degree millimeter map from SIMBA on the Swedish-ESO Submillimetre Telescope (SEST). The c2d Spitzer Legacy Team's data reduction pipeline is described in detail. Over 1500 24 micron sources and 41 70 micron sources were detected by MIPS with fluxes greater than 10-sigma. More than 40 potential YSOs are identified with a MIPS and 2MASS color-color diagram and by their spectral indices, including two previously unknown sources with 24 micron excesses. Our new SIMBA millimeter map of Cha II shows that only a small fraction of the gas is in compact structures with high column densities. The extended emission seen by MIPS is compared with previous CO observations. Some selected interesting sources, including two detected at 1 mm, associated with Cha II are discussed in detail and their SEDs presented.     Divergence of the Grueneisen Ratio at Quantum Critical Points in Heavy Fermion Metals

    We present low-temperature volume thermal expansion, β\beta, and specific heat, CC, measurements on high-quality single crystals of CeNi2Ge2 and YbRh2(Si0.95_{0.95}Ge0.05_{0.05})2_2 which are located very near to quantum critical points. For both systems, β\beta shows a more singular temperature dependence than CC, and thus the Grueneisen ratio Γβ/C{\Gamma \propto \beta/C} diverges as T --> 0. For CeNi2Ge2, our results are in accordance with the spin-density wave (SDW) scenario for three-dimensional critical spin-fluctuations. By contrast, the observed singularity in YbRh2(Si(Si_{0.95}GeGe_{0.05}))_2$ cannot be explained by the itinerant SDW theory but is qualitatively consistent with a locally quantum critical picture.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
