Phonon-affected steady-state transport through molecular quantum dots
We consider transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot contacted to
macroscopic leads acting as charge reservoirs. In the equilibrium and
nonequilibrium regime, we study the formation of a polaron-like transient state
at the quantum dot for all ratios of the dot-lead coupling to the energy of the
local phonon mode. We show that the polaronic renormalization of the dot-lead
coupling is a possible mechanism for negative differential conductance.
Moreover, the effective dot level follows one of the lead chemical potentials
to enhance resonant transport, causing novel features in the inelastic
tunneling signal. In the linear response regime, we investigate the impact of
the electron-phonon interaction on the thermoelectrical properties of the

A para-differential renormalization technique for nonlinear dispersive equations
For \alpha \in (1,2) we prove that the initial-value problem \partial_t
u+D^\alpha\partial_x u+\partial_x(u^2/2)=0 on \mathbb{R}_x\times\mathbb{R}_t;
u(0)=\phi, is globally well-posed in the space of real-valued L^2-functions. We
use a frequency dependent renormalization method to control the strong low-high

Classes of behavior of small-world networks
Small-world networks are the focus of recent interest because they appear to
circumvent many of the limitations of either random networks or regular
lattices as frameworks for the study of interaction networks of complex
systems. Here, we report an empirical study of the statistical properties of a
variety of diverse real-world networks. We present evidence of the occurrence
of three classes of small-world networks: (a) scale-free networks,
characterized by a vertex connectivity distribution that decays as a power law;
(b) broad-scale networks, characterized by a connectivity distribution that has
a power-law regime followed by a sharp cut-off; (c) single-scale networks,
characterized by a connectivity distribution with a fast decaying tail.
Moreover, we note for the classes of broad-scale and single-scale networks that
there are constraints limiting the addition of new links. Our results suggest
that the nature of such constraints may be the controlling factor for the
emergence of different classes of networks
Non-additivity of decoherence rates in superconducting qubits
We show that the relaxation and decoherence rates 1/T_1 and 1/T_2 of a qubit
coupled to several noise sources are in general not additive, i.e., that the
total rates are not the sums of the rates due to each individual noise source.
To demonstrate this, we calculate the relaxation and pure dephasing rates 1/T_1
and 1/T_\phi of a superconducting (SC) flux qubit in the Born-Markov
approximation in the presence of several circuit impedances Z_i using network
graph theory and determine their deviation from additivity (the mixing term).
We find that there is no mixing term in 1/T_\phi and that the mixing terms in
1/T_1 and 1/T_2 can be positive or negative, leading to reduced or enhanced
relaxation and decoherence times T_1 and T_2. The mixing term due to the
circuit inductance L at the qubit transition frequency \omega_{01} is generally
of second order in \omega_{01}L/Z_i, but of third order if all impedances Z_i
are pure resistances. We calculate T_{1,2} for an example of a SC flux qubit

Noise Induced Complexity: From Subthreshold Oscillations to Spiking in Coupled Excitable Systems
We study stochastic dynamics of an ensemble of N globally coupled excitable
elements. Each element is modeled by a FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillator and is
disturbed by independent Gaussian noise. In simulations of the Langevin
dynamics we characterize the collective behavior of the ensemble in terms of
its mean field and show that with the increase of noise the mean field displays
a transition from a steady equilibrium to global oscillations and then, for
sufficiently large noise, back to another equilibrium. Diverse regimes of
collective dynamics ranging from periodic subthreshold oscillations to
large-amplitude oscillations and chaos are observed in the course of this
transition. In order to understand details and mechanisms of noise-induced
dynamics we consider a thermodynamic limit of the ensemble, and
derive the cumulant expansion describing temporal evolution of the mean field
fluctuations. In the Gaussian approximation this allows us to perform the
bifurcation analysis; its results are in good agreement with dynamical
scenarios observed in the stochastic simulations of large ensembles
Propionibacterium avidum infection following breast reduction: high morbidity from a low-virulence pathogen
Propionibacterium avidum is a common inhabitant of sebaceous glands, traditionally considered to be of low virulence and generally found on implanted foreign material. We report a rare case of P. avidum breast abscess, causing severe morbidity following breast reduction surgery. A 36-year-old woman presented with a non-painful wound discharge 3 weeks postoperatively, and was treated conservatively. She was readmitted 7 weeks postoperatively with a red and tender breast. A purulent discharging abscess was drained under ultrasound guidance. A 2-week intravenous course of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, followed by oral replacement for a month resulted effective. Serial ultrasound imaging was useful in treatment decision-making. The infective potential of P. avidum may be underappreciated. Proximity of sutures to the axilla, tobacco smoking and the potential for resorbable sutures to host bacteria may predispose to infection, and should raise the clinician's awareness
