    A Numerical Study of Aero Engine Sub-idle Operation: From a Realistic Representation of Spray Injection to Detailed Chemistry LES-CMC

    High altitude relight is a matter of increasing importance for aero engine manufacturers, in which combustion plays literally a vital role. In this paper we want to evaluate the predictive capability of a combined Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) and Large Eddy Simulation with Conditional Moment Closure (LES-CMC) approach for a spray combustion process at these extreme conditions. The focus is on the SPH modelling of the kerosene primary atomization, the extraction of realistic spray boundary conditions for LES-CMC and the effect of the spray on combustion. Interestingly, it will be demonstrated that the fragment size distributions resulting from the airblast atomization are characterized by bimodal behaviour during the relight process and that small and large fragments differ significantly in their dynamical behavior. This is shown to affect the combustion in the Central Recirculation Zone (CRZ). Very large fragments are even able to supersede the flame from the CRZ, such that endothermic pyrolysis becomes dominant, but simultaneously essential to sustain and stabilize the remaining flame with reactive pyrolysis species. The study proves the ability of our methodology for extreme operating conditions, in which experimental insights are hardly possible

    Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Trachea with Concomitant Granulomatous Lymph Node Lesions

    We report herein the case of a 57-year-old lady who had two concomittant lesions, an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the trachea, and severe granulomatous lesions in the adjacent hilar lymph nodes. While these two lesions shared histological and some immunohistochemical features lesions. They differed in terms of ALK-1 expression, which was positive in the tracheal tumor and negative in the lymph nodes. The discussion of the case circles around putative pathophysiological links between the lesions. The authors favor the idea that the lymph nodes present a sarcoid-like granulomatous reaction to the inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in the trachea over a coexistence of two independent entities. However, no conclusive evidence for this interpretation can be presented based on the existing literature

    Modelling quasicrystals at positive temperature

    We consider a two-dimensional lattice model of equilibrium statistical mechanics, using nearest neighbor interactions based on the matching conditions for an aperiodic set of 16 Wang tiles. This model has uncountably many ground state configurations, all of which are nonperiodic. The question addressed in this paper is whether nonperiodicity persists at low but positive temperature. We present arguments, mostly numerical, that this is indeed the case. In particular, we define an appropriate order parameter, prove that it is identically zero at high temperatures, and show by Monte Carlo simulation that it is nonzero at low temperatures

    Analyzing the Interaction of Vortex and Gas–Liquid Interface Dynamics in Fuel Spray Nozzles by Means of Lagrangian-Coherent Structures (2D)

    Predictions of the primary breakup of fuel in realistic fuel spray nozzles for aero-engine combustors by means of the SPH method are presented. Based on simulations in 2D, novel insights into the fundamental effects of primary breakup are established by analyzing the dynamics of Lagrangian-coherent structures (LCSs). An in-house visualization and data exploration platform is used in order to retrieve fields of the finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE) derived from the SPH predictions aiming at the identification of time resolved LCSs. The main focus of this paper is demonstrating the suitability of FTLE fields to capture and visualize the interaction between the gas and the fuel flow leading to liquid disintegration. Aiming for a convenient illustration at a high spatial resolution, the analysis is presented based on 2D datasets. However, the method and the conclusions can analoguosly be transferred to 3D. The FTLE fields of modified nozzle geometries are compared in order to highlight the influence of the nozzle geometry on primary breakup, which is a novel and unique approach for this industrial application. Modifications of the geometry are proposed which are capable of suppressing the formation of certain LCSs, leading to less fluctuation of the fuel flow emerging from the spray nozzle

    Association of Shank 1A Scaffolding Protein with Cone Photoreceptor Terminals in the Mammalian Retina

    Photoreceptor terminals contain post-synaptic density (PSD) proteins e.g., PSD-95/PSD-93, but their role at photoreceptor synapses is not known. PSDs are generally restricted to post-synaptic boutons in central neurons and form scaffolding with multiple proteins that have structural and functional roles in neuronal signaling. The Shank family of proteins (Shank 1–3) functions as putative anchoring proteins for PSDs and is involved in the organization of cytoskeletal/signaling complexes in neurons. Specifically, Shank 1 is restricted to neurons and interacts with both receptors and signaling molecules at central neurons to regulate plasticity. However, it is not known whether Shank 1 is expressed at photoreceptor terminals. In this study we have investigated Shank 1A localization in the outer retina at photoreceptor terminals. We find that Shank 1A is expressed presynaptically in cone pedicles, but not rod spherules, and it is absent from mice in which the Shank 1 gene is deleted. Shank 1A co-localizes with PSD-95, peanut agglutinin, a marker of cone terminals, and glycogen phosphorylase, a cone specific marker. These findings provide convincing evidence for Shank 1A expression in both the inner and outer plexiform layers, and indicate a potential role for PSD-95/Shank 1 complexes at cone synapses in the outer retina.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (K08 Award NS41411)Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Investigator

    We analyze the deviations of transit times from a linear ephemeris for the Kepler Objects of Interest (KOI) through Quarter six (Q6) of science data. We conduct two statistical tests for all KOIs and a related statistical test for all pairs of KOIs in multi-transiting systems. These tests identify several systems which show potentially interesting transit timing variations (TTVs). Strong TTV systems have been valuable for the confirmation of planets and their mass measurements.     A Transiting Hot Jupiter Orbiting a Metal-Rich Star

    We announce the discovery of Kepler-6b, a transiting hot Jupiter orbiting a star with unusually high metallicity, [Fe/H] = +0.34 +/- 0.04. The planet's mass is about 2/3 that of Jupiter, Mp = 0.67 Mj, and the radius is thirty percent larger than that of Jupiter, Rp = 1.32 Rj, resulting in a density of 0.35 g/cc, a fairly typical value for such a planet. The orbital period is P = 3.235 days.     The Tacrolimus Metabolism Rate Influences Renal Function after Kidney Transplantation

    The effective calcineurin inhibitor (CNI) tacrolimus (Tac) is an integral part of the standard immunosuppressive regimen after renal transplantation (RTx). However, as a potent CNI it has nephrotoxic potential leading to impaired renal function in some cases. Therefore, it is of high clinical impact to identify factors which can predict who is endangered to develop CNI toxicity. We hypothesized that the Tac metabolism rate expressed as the blood concentration normalized by the dose (C/D ratio) is such a simple predictor. Therefore, we analyzed the impact of the C/D ratio on kidney function after RTx. Renal function was analyzed 1, 2, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months after RTx in 248 patients with an immunosuppressive regimen including basiliximab, tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and prednisolone. According to keep the approach simple, patients were split into three C/D groups: fast, intermediate and slow metabolizers. Notably, compared with slow metabolizers fast metabolizers of Tac showed significantly lower estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) values at all the time points analyzed. Moreover, fast metabolizers underwent more indication renal biopsies (p = 0.006) which revealed a higher incidence of CNI nephrotoxicity (p = 0.015) and BK nephropathy (p = 0.024) in this group. We herein identified the C/D ratio as an easy calculable risk factor for the development of CNI nephrotoxicity and BK nephropathy after RTx. We propose that the simple C/D ratio should be taken into account early in patient’s risk management strategies.</p
