    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the students’ feedback after their participation in a WebQuest research project and aims to determine if the format of a WebQuest enhances student interest and engagement with a text compared to a traditional reading. It was hypothesized that students would respond favorably to this format, and that the increased engagement would lead to greater motivation; however, after analyzing student feedback, it was determined that the format alone wasn’t successful in promoting student interest and some modifications would be necessary to increase student engagement and motivation

    Get PDF
Although the methods and mediums of receiving information have rapidly changed, the main method of presenting listening activities in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom has not. More and more people are using social networking services (SNSs) as their source for daily information, yet most EFL classrooms still use voice only recordings for listening activities. To keep up with the changes and to provide students with real authentic listening experiences, many teachers have begun to use SNSs in their classrooms. This paper examines the strengths and weaknesses of using Facebook Live as an authentic source for listening activities in an EFL classroom. The data collected revealed a variety of strengths and weaknesses of this application, and showed potential for use within the classroom and for allowing students to practice listening outside the classroom

The achievement gap between middle class white students and black or Hispanic students living in low income households continues to be a persistent problem in education even ten years since the authorization of No Child Left Behind in 2001. This study examined the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme and how students from low income households preformed on the Criterion Referenced Competencies Test (CRCT) mathematics and reading subtests when compared to similar students at a school with a traditional instruction program. Analysis of covariance was employed using scores from students’ fifth grade composite Cognitive Abilities Tests as the covariate. The analysis did not detect a significant difference (p=.410) on the eighth grade adjusted means reading CRCT scores, but did detect a significant difference (

"English for Academic Purposes in the Korean University Context: Teachers’ Opinions on What is Being Taught, How it is Being Taught, and Possible Improvements"

    Get PDF
As the use of English in the academic world increases around the world, English for Academic Purposes (EAP) continues to grow. The increase in demand for EAP courses and teachers often finds English teachers having to prepare students to study in fields that they themselves might not be familiar with or teach a style of course they might not have done before. In addition to these obstacles, there are many institutional barriers that prevent teachers from teaching EAP properly. This paper examines these problems in the South Korean university context. Currently many Native English Speaking (NES) English teachers are transitioning from teaching Commutative Language Teaching (CLT) classes to teaching EAP courses and are experiencing many problems and barriers as they transition and teach EAP. 10 NES university teachers were interviewed in order to gather qualitative data about their experiences in teaching EAP courses in an attempt to better understand the current situation in many Korean universities. The data gathered revealed many similar problems and led to ideas for possible improvement on many levels

Relación entre procesos de autoconciencia y salud mental en jóvenes universitarios

    Get PDF
The purpose of the present study was to analyze the relation between the processes of Self- Consciousness and Mental Health in young university students. The research is based on the model of Psychological Mindedness proposed by Grant (2001) and the mental Health model developed by Veit and Ware (1983). Specifically, we explored whether there are differences in Mental Health according to the sex of the participants and whether the correlations between the processes of Self- Consciousness and Mental Health vary according to this sociodemographic variable. To achieve these objectives, two instruments, the Self-Reflection and Insight Scale (SRIS) and the Mental Health Inventory (MHI), were applied to a group of 313 students aged 18 to 28 (M = 21.65, SD = 1.90) students from a private university in Metropolitan Lima. The results showed differences in average scores for Emotional Ties, Self-Reflection and their subfactors, with higher scores in the case of women. Insight maintains direct relationships with Psychological Wellbeing and its subfactors, and indirectly with Psychological Stress and its subfactors. A small direct relationship was found between Commitment to Self-Reflection and Depression. In the case of men, the relationship between Commitment and Depression was maintained, while the relations between the Processes of Selfconsciousness were diluted. Finally, in the case of women, relations between Insight and both processes of Self-consciousness were maintained. The results are discussed and relevant guidelines are proposed for future research on the subject.Tesi

On the consequences of Fisk's type magnetic field configuration for galactic cosmic ray modulation

    No full text
Three-dimensional steady state transport equation of galactic cosmic rays with drift included is solved by means of newly achieved Fortran code in two cases: 1) Fisk’s type of heliospheric magnetic field dominates in the heliosphere; 2) standard Parker field fills the interplanetary space. The spherically symmetric heliosphere bounded at a distance of 100 AU is assumed. In the calculations the parallel and perpendicular diffusion coefficients are proportional to 1/B, anti-symmetric element of the diffusion tensor has the form derived under the assumption of week-scattering. The computed modulated spectra are presented and compared with experimental data (IMP3, IMP8, balloons, and CAPRICE) for the minimum period of solar activity. The best fit is obtained when the index of the power of rigidity in diffusion coefficient formula is less than 0.8

On the long-term variability of the green corona accordingly to four existing databases

    No full text
We examine four long-term databases of monthly means of the whole disc green coronal brightness which cover the period of the last five and a half solar cycles to verify them, and compare their usefulness, as indices characterize the solar activity. We use the data from (1) the Norikura Observatory, (2) the Kislovodsk Observatory, (3) intensities detected by several coronographs and converted to the common photometric scale of Pic du Midi, (4) coronal indices obtained from detections of several observatories and converted to the photometric scale of Lomnicky Stit. We compare them by means of correlative analysis with the time series of sunspot numbers. The data (2) demonstrate the best agreement with sunspot number as the reference (r = 0.88)

Secular behaviour of geomagnetic indices IHV, C9, aa since 1901 and presumed rising of solar open magnetic field flux

    No full text
We examine long-term series of IHV and C9 geomagnetic indices calculated from the data derived during the 20th century in St.-Petersburg, Pavlovsk, Swider, Cheltenham, Fredericksburg, Kakioka, and Honolulu in order to verify the conclusion of Lockwood et al. [8] that the total magnetic flux leaving the Sun increased by a factor of 2.3 since 1901. It was supported on the analysis of aa geomagnetic index which shows a drift upward from the 12th–13th solar cycle to the 22nd cycle. The mean level of the annual averages of indices used here have been approximately constant or showed the clearly smaller rising than aa drift upward from 1901 till 1960. We conclude that the double rising of solar magnetic flux during the 20th century is questionable
