Digit extension: validation of a new biometric variable.
This paper reports on a new biometric variable, namely digit extension. We calculated the average length of the second and fourth digit rather than their ratio and we entitled this biometric digit extension. In a first study, we showed that digit extension is related more strongly to a self-concept associated with vigor (masculine trait) than with supportiveness (feminine trait) in men, but not in women. In a second study we found that digit extension and risk seeking (masculine trait) were related in men, but not in women. In a third study we found that for both men and women a higher digit extension was related to more altruistic behavior in a situation where it is in accordance with either masculine or feminine traits. For all studies we show divergent validity with digit ratio, indicating that digit extension is independent of digit ratio. By injecting an electron into the empty pie* molecular orbital (LUMO) of Amino Acids in gas phase, we measure the Vertical Attachment Energies (VAEs) for the formation of short-lived anion states of these species using electron transmission spectroscopy (ETS). Our ETS study, a first of its kind to measure the VAE for the simplest of proteins, Glycine-Glycine (Gly-Gly), is currently in progress. Self-Reported Leadership Experiences in Relation to Inventoried Social and Emotional Intelligence
Leadership has both social and emotional components. Social intelligence appears to tap the social component found in leadership. Recently, emotional intelligence has surfaced as a stable individual difference variable and appears to tap the emotional component of leadership. Mayer and Salovey (1993) suggested that the emotional intelligence and social intelligence constructs overlap. This study examined the power of both emotional and social intelligence to account for variance in self-reported leadership experiences. One hundred ninety-two university students completed measures of social and emotional intelligence and a measure of leadership experiences. Regression analyses showed that both social intelligence and emotional intelligence accounted for variance in leadership experiences. Although emotional intelligence was found to account for variance in leadership, it did not add unique variance beyond social intelligence. Social intelligence appears to play a principal role in leadership
Frustration - how it can be measured
A misfit parameter is used to characterize the degree of frustration of
ordered and disordered systems. It measures the increase of the ground-state
energy due to frustration in comparison with that of a relevant reference
state. The misfit parameter is calculated for various spin-glass models. It
allows one to compare these models with each other. The extension of this
concept to other combinatorial optimization problems with frustration, e.g.
p-state Potts glasses, graph-partitioning problems and coloring problems is

Comparison of three commercial sparse-matrix crystallization screens
Sparse-matrix sampling using commercially available crystallization screen kits has become the most popular way of determining the preliminary crystallization conditions for macromolecules. In this study, the efficiency of three commercial screening kits, Crystal Screen and Crystal Screen 2 (Hampton Research), Wizard Screens I and II (Emerald BioStructures) and Personal Structure Screens 1 and 2 (Molecular Dimensions), has been compared using a set of 19 diverse proteins. 18 proteins yielded crystals using at least one crystallization screen. Surprisingly, Crystal Screens and Personal Structure Screens showed dramatically different results, although most of the crystallization formulations are identical as listed by the manufacturers. Higher molecular weight polyethylene glycols and mixed precipitants were found to be the most effective precipitants in this study
Crystallization of the C-terminal domain of the mouse brain cytosolic long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase
The mammalian long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase, the enzyme that catalyses the hydrolysis of acyl-CoAs to free fatty acids, contains two fused 4HBT (4-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA thioesterase) motifs. The C-terminal domain of the mouse long-chain acyl-CoA thioesterase (Acot7) has been expressed in bacteria and crystallized. The crystals were obtained by vapour diffusion using PEG 2000 MME as precipitant at pH 7.0 and 290 K. The crystals have the symmetry of space group R32 ( unit-cell parameters a = b = 136.83, c = 99.82 angstrom, gamma = 120 degrees). Two molecules are expected in the asymmetric unit. The crystals diffract to 2.4 angstrom resolution using the laboratory X-ray source and are suitable for crystal structure determination
Monte Carlo investigation of the magnetic anisotropy in Fe/Dy multilayers
By Monte Carlo simulations in the canonical ensemble, we have studied the
magnetic anisotropy in Fe/Dy amorphous multilayers. This work has been
motivated by experimental results which show a clear correlation between the
magnetic perpendicular anisotropy and the substrate temperature during
elaboration of the samples. Our aim is to relate macroscopic magnetic
properties of the multilayers to their structure, more precisely their
concentration profile. Our model is based on concentration dependent exchange
interactions and spin values, on random magnetic anisotropy and on the
existence of locally ordered clusters that leads to a perpendicular
magnetisation. Our results evidence that a compensation point occurs in the
case of an abrupt concentration profile. Moreover, an increase of the
noncollinearity of the atomic moments has been evidenced when the Dy anisotropy
constant value grows. We have also shown the existence of inhomogeneous
magnetisation profiles along the samples which are related to the concentration
profiles
The distribution of different classes of nuclear localization signals (NLSs) in diverse organisms and the utilization of the minor NLS-binding site in plant nuclear import factor importin-α
The specific recognition between the import receptor importin-α and the nuclear localization signals (NLSs) is crucial to ensure the selective transport of cargoes into the nucleus. NLSs contain one or two clusters of positively-charged amino-acids, which usually bind to the major (monopartite NLSs) or both minor and major NLS-binding sites (bipartite NLSs). In our recent study, we determined the structure of importin-α1a from rice (Oryza sativa), and made two observations that suggest an increased utilization of the minor NLS-binding site in this protein. First, unlike the mammalian protein, both the major and minor NLS-binding sites are auto-inhibited in the unliganded rice protein. Second, we showed that NLSs of the 'plant-specific' class preferentially bind to the minor NLS-binding site of rice importin-α. Here, we show that a distinct group of 'minor site-specific' NLSs also bind to the minor site of the rice protein. We further show a greater enrichment of proteins containing these plant-specific' and 'minor site-specific' NLSs in the rice proteome. However, the analysis of the distribution of different classes of NLSs in diverse eukaryotes shows that in all organisms, the minor site-specific NLSs are much less prevalent than the classical monopartite and bipartite NLSs
