In the past two decades, mediation in general has gained increasing acceptance in the legal community.\u27 [T]he search for alternative methods of resolving disputes has burgeoned to \u27a movement\u27. 2 In the divorce context, particularly, mediation has been seen by some as a more suitable process than the adversary system. 3 Proponents of mediation assert that the adversary system involves debilitating expense, frustrating delay, 4 and fails to address the emotional needs of the parties.5 Adversarial tactics often aggravate rather than resolve spousal differences, 6 though an amicable settlement might be in the best interests of both parties, especially when there are children by the marriag

    Get PDF
Clinical chorioamnionitis continues to contribute to fetal and maternal morbidity and mortality. Significant advances have been made in the last 20 years in understanding the pathophysiologic processes leading to chorioamnionitis. This review addresses the history, incidence, pathophysiology, host defenses, risk factors, diagnosis, and maternal and neonatal management of clinically evident chorioamnionitis. After a detailed review of the physiologic processes leading to clinical chorioamnionitis and sepsis, we present a modern management scheme designed to optimize perinatal outcome for both mother and fetus

Painted Rock Dam, a 181 ft (55.2 m) high, zoned earth embankment detention structure near Gila Bend, Arizona, retained approximately 2.3 million acre ft (2.8 x 109m3) of water for an extended period during the winter of 1978- 1979. Several areas of seepage developed over major portions of the downstream valley and in a minor area on the right abutment. These areas were monitored while instrumentation was installed and investigations made to determine the nature of the seepage and provide the basis for evaluation of structural performance and design of necessary relief and control measures. Construction of seepage relief and control measures and stabilizing berms was accomplished in the fall of 1979. Performance of the project has been evaluated during subsequent storage periods through 1986, with the conclusion that the control measures are functioning satisfactorily, and in general accordance with design concepts. Site conditions, original design and construction, seepage observations, instrumentation, investigations, evaluations, and design and construction of remedial measures are summarized and lessons learned are presented

Attitudinal and Dispositional Predictors of Environmentally-Responsible Behavior

    Get PDF
Measures of locus of control, optimism, consideration of future consequences of behavior, environmental concern, belief in global warming, biospheric altruism, corporate skepticism, economic motivation, recycling attitudes and motivation, and political ideology were used to predict environmentally-responsible behaviors. Regression analyses revealed that the best predictors were perceived importance of recycling, economic motivation, recycling motivation, and corporate skepticism. These results suggest that global dispositional variables, such as optimism and locus of control, are not particularly useful predictors of environmentally-responsible behaviors. Instead, environmentally-specific dispositions, such as economic motivation and recycling motivation are much better predictors, as well as attitudinal dimensions such as perceived importance of recycling, environmental concern, belief in global warming, corporate skepticism, and political ideology. This suggests that efforts to increase environmentally-responsible behaviors are best directed at impacting environmentally-relevant dispositions and attitudes

A characterization of the Linux community of Practice Using Linux Newsgroups and Bales' Interaction Process Analysis

The open source software community represents a new community of practice and approach to software development and distribution. It is important to study this community because their approach differs radically from the traditional development and distribution of proprietary software. One of the largest groups in the open source software community is the Linux operating systems community. The community of users of the Linux operating system is a widespread group that frequently communicates through on-line newsgroups. These newsgroups serve as forums where the members may participate in ongoing discussion, or "threads," reading other members' messages and posting messages of their own. The participants can discuss issues relative to the Linux operating system, ask questions, provide technical support, and generally engage in the same activities that a face-to-face discussion group would engage in. To increase our understanding of the Linux community, this study seeks to characterize the Linux community of practice through an analysis of these newsgroups. While quantitative studies of this community performed, there has not been much work done in the way of qualitative studies. The analysis is performed using categories developed by Bales' Interaction Process Analysis. After determining the newsgroups that we wanted to analyze, selecting specific discussions from these newsgroups, and coding the messages using Bales' categories of Interaction Process Analysis, we were able to establish a clear picture of the frequency with which specific behaviors occurred in the newsgroups. We found that in general most of the behaviors that occurred in the messages posted to the newsgroups were attempted answers, and the second most frequently occurring behaviors in the messages were questions. There were a relatively small number of messages that displayed socio-emotional behavior
