Prehistoric Subsistence Strategies on the Pecho Coast: An Experimental Collection of California Mussels and Turban Snails

Shellfish exploitation by ancient Indigenous people can be observed in archaeological assemblages from shellfish middens throughout California (Erlandson 1988; Glassow 1992; Kennett 2005; Kennedy 2005; Whitaker 2008). Indigenous Californians relied upon the resources from open rocky coast ecosystems as early as 9,000 years BP, yet archaeological researchers continue to debate the actual dietary value of and energy required for procurement of such shellfish (Erlandson 1988; Jones 2003; Jones and Richman 1995). In order to discern the costs and benefits associated with shellfish exploitation, researchers have conducted archaeological experiments to try to replicate prehistoric shellfish foraging. The empirical data produced from experimental archaeology yields predictive models for the optimal diet of foragers, which can then be compared to data acquired from archaeological excavations to predict past ecological and social circumstances (Jones 2003; Kennett 2005; Whitaker 2008). For this project, I conducted a shellfish collection experiment at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant harbor in San Luis Obispo to determine the energetics involved in the exploitation of California mussels, Mytilus californianus, and turban snails, Tegula funebralis

Influências ecológicas e filogenéticas sobre a dentição maxilar das serpentes

Usamos a dentição maxilar das serpentes como um sistema para investigar a importância relativa das pressões seletivas ecológicas e das restrições filogenéticas na determinação da morfologia. Examinamos a morfologia maxilar de três grupos de serpentes com diferentes dietas, com cada grupo compreendendo duas linhagens distintas-Boidae e Colubroidea. Nossos resultados sugerem que as pressões seletivas relacionadas à dieta podem ser mais significativas que a história filogenética na conformação da morfologia maxilar.Ecological and phylogenetic influences on maxillary dentition in snakes. The maxillary dentition of snakes was used as a system with which to investigate the relative importance of the interacting forces of ecological selective pressures and phylogenetic constraints in determining morphology. The maxillary morphology of three groups of snakes having different diets, with each group comprising two distinct lineages-boids and colubroids-was examined. Our results suggest that dietary selective pressures may be more significant than phylogenetic history in shaping maxillary morphology

Regional special care nursery environments : Navigating the role of mother

Premature birth presents challenges for most mothers assuming a parenting role with their infant. Living in rural and regional areas provides additional hardship due to isolation, distances and limited support services. The predominant focus of research in the area of premature birth has been on the survival of infants. There has been limited investigation of the experiences of women with infants in special care nurseries (SCNs), in regional Australia. The ways in which mothers ‘navigate their way’, physically and emotionally, in SCN environments was the focus of this study. Using a qualitative interpretive design data were collected through in-depth interviews with mothers and analysed thematically. Women related a dislocation in their lives as a result of their infant’s hospitalisation. The nursery space and the various ways space was used to marginalise or sanction mothers was revealed and resulted in women adopting conflicting roles throughout this time. These findings provide direction for developing more supportive environments for parents relying on SCNs for the care of their infant. This study provides new insight into the experiences of women and their environmental sensitivity within SCN settings. Findings will increase regional midwives’ understanding of mothers’ interpretations of the neonatal nursery environment. Insights into maternal perspectives will assist in the provision of better family-centred care and improved outcomes for the vulnerable families of premature infants

Fabrication of highly efficient grating band-pass filters and their applications in soliton propagation system

We report here fabrication of highly efficient in-fiber grating bandpass filters using the established UV-side- exposure technique. Various combinations of passband/stopband and transmission/rejection of single- and multi-channel filters have been produced in hydrogenated standard telecom, high Ge-doped and B/Ge-codoped fibers. Up to > 60 dB rejection stopbands ranging from -2 nm to 55 nm, and passbands with 0.02 nm - 3 nm linewidths and transmissivity up to > 90% have been achieved with these devices. By concatenating several structures, a bandpass filter has been demonstrated with a combination of a 0.16 nm passband centered in a approximately 35 nm stopband, representing the highest reported finesse of 220 for any multi-nanometer stopband filter. We also report the first application of a grating bandpass filter for suppressing timing jitter in soliton propagation system, enabling transmission of 10 ps solitons over a distance of 2700 km

Essential prescribing tips for GP Associates-in-Training

Prescribing is an essential role in general practice but it is also, at times, a high risk activity. GP Associates-in-Training (GP AiTs) have been highlighted as needing further support to reduce the risk of prescribing errors. This article highlights some common prescribing errors to help GP AiTs to review their prescribing and develop prescribing habits to avoid errors. The general practice workforce is changing and there are more pharmacists working in general practice. This article describes the role of clinical pharmacists in prescribing safety and in supporting GP AiTs

An Analysis of Factors Associated With Older Workers’ Employment Participation and Preferences in Australia

Australian government and organizational age-management policies continue to target employment participation among older workers in light of an aging population. Typically, efforts to reduce early retirement among older workers have focused on well-established factors, including the promotion of worker health, reducing injury, supporting caregivers, reducing age discrimination and enhancing skill development. This research extends on the former approach by examining established factors along with important emerging factors, namely work-life conflict, work centrality and person-job fit. Additionally, the research analyses the effects of gender and financial pressure on older workers’ employment participation and preferences. Logistic regression analysis of cross-sectional survey data involving 1,504 Australians aged 45–65, revealed that two established factors, physical health and caregiving, and all three emerging factors were associated with employment participation and preferences to be employed. However, important variations on the basis of gender and financial pressure were also identified. Caregiving was more strongly associated with the preference to remain employed for men (OR = 0.2.54, p < 0.01) than women (OR = 1.03, ns) and person-job fit was more strongly associated with the preference to remain employed for women (OR = 1.64, p < 0.001) than men (OR = 0.91, ns). Work-life conflict was more strongly associated with the preference to leave employment for those reporting limited financial pressure (OR = 0.60, p < 0.001) compared to those in poorer financial circumstances (OR = 0.87, ns). These findings suggest that organizational age management policies should focus on both established and emerging factors, particularly the provision of flexible working conditions and improving the psychosocial work environment. However, such efforts should carefully consider the different needs of men and women, and those under varying levels of financial stress. With respect to government policy to promote employment participation, the findings support a stronger focus on improving physical and psychosocial work conditions rather than increasing the pension eligibility age. This may require further collaboration between government and employers
